Tip of the Day

Tip of the Day:

The following tip comes from Chef AJ. She saves her spice bottles when they are empty and reuses them.

She says that research shows that most people don't eat 30 distinct and different meals each month, but rather repeat their favorite meals every week.

Chef AJ says her Red Lentil Chili is no exception. Instead of measuring out all 7 of the spices everytime she goes to make it, she uses several empty spice bottles and makes them all at the same time. Then all she has to do is grab one and put them in her pressure cooker with the rest of the ingredients.

I have always done this with taco seasoning mix that I make up, although I just place them into small bowls. I make about 10 at a time and it is a big time saver, but now I'm going to start saving my spice bottles for this purpose.  :)

  1. That's a good idea. I make a jar of seasoning mixes and scoop how much I need out.

  2. This reminds me of combining and bagging or containerizing homemade Bisquick, brownie mix, hamburger helper-type meals, instant cocoa mix, and many more. A kitchen time-saver.

  3. This is a late comment about your enchilada sauce I just made. My dh is allergic to the canned stuff and I tried making the tomato sauce kind years ago and no one liked it. I saw your's and knew my dh would like those flavors. Both him and my ds loved it,so thanks for a great sauce that he can use. Cheryl

  4. That is a great time-saver, Belinda.
I reuse my large spice containers for home-grown herbs. The funny thing is, I rarely label the herbs, so only I know what's in each container, by it's look and aroma. The container that says "chili powder" really has dried basil, and the one that says "ginger" really has oregano in it. I was almost stumped myself, this winter, when cleaning out the back of the cupboard, i came across a container that even I couldn't tell what it was, that is until I tasted it. It was very sweet, and turned out to be stevia. I guess I should start labeling some of these containers, for the rest of the family.

    1. That is a good idea too, Lili. I love growing herbs. I used to mow my neighbors lawn and would have to mow part of her mint patch every time and it smelled so good. :)

  5. I love this idea and will be doing this, and labelling of course otherwise I would not know what they were. Thanks for the tip.
