Fourth Frugal Friday of April 2023

Welcome to Friday!

My Frugal Week

Seems like the days fly by so often that another week has passed before I know it, so I played catch up on reading and commenting on multiple blogs this week

We wash our hands at both sinks in our home with bar soap. However, I do have some  pump soap also, and they had started to accumulate under the sink creating clutter to me. So, I decided to use them up to clear them out and make the area more tidy.  I starting with a Christmas based one from Bath and Body Works and have now emptied that one and am working on the next one.

On Monday I went to Chattanooga for my annual mammogram. I didn’t feel up to running any errands afterwards, so I came home and took a nap instead.

With the change in temperature, the tires on my car lose pressure, which is aggravating at times. So, I called AAA and they came out and inflated my tires for me. I pay for this service yearly, so I might as well use them when needed.

This is life in the country…our local elementary school was taking TCAPS this week and had some visitors. 😂

Saving Money In My Frugal Kitchen

On Saturday I roasted a whole chicken that I had in the freezer and afterwards took all the chicken off the bones and saved it for several different meals this week. What was left after three days went into the freezer for future meals.

Our chickens are each laying about one egg per day and we’ve gotten over 100 eggs since they first came to live here. We’ve made all kinds of food with the eggs like breakfast burritos, boiled eggs, deviled eggs, egg salad, and much more. They definitely pay for themselves with their good egg production.

We were out of sour cream this week, but no worries, I had some cottage cheese on hand and blended that up and mixed in a package of ranch seasoning mix and used that instead. It turned out delicious and just as thick as sour cream would have been.

I had some potatoes that had sprouted in the pantry and I was going to feed them to the chickens, but upon further inspection decided they were too good for the chickens, so made plans to use them for us this week instead.

We bought a new shelf for our kitchen area this week. We put it together on Monday evening and it’s already came in handy for more storage in the kitchen.

Meals This Week

All meals are served with either salad or vegetables and may not always be listed here.

* If you see a dinner in bold print that means we had it more than once this week.

Roasted Chicken, Stove Top Dressing, Green Beans with Onions.
Chicken, Baked Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans with Onions.
BBQ Chicken, Roasted Yukon Gold Potatoes, Stir Fry Vegetables.
Movie Night Pizza
Lemon Pepper Salmon, Baked Russet Potatoes, Sugar Snap Peas.
Chicken and Shrimp Teriyaki, Stir Fried Vegetables.
Chicken Tacos, Roasted Potatoes, Stir Fried Vegetables.
Grilled Chicken Thighs, Roasted Japanese Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli.

Recipe of the Week

This is a recipe that came from my Mom who worked as the head cashier in a small town grocery store in the early 1990s. It’s a combination of three cans of Campbell’s soups.

Cream of Celery soup
Cream of Mushroom soup
Cheddar Cheese soup

You mix these three together and do not add water to them.

Brown one pound of stew meat or roast, season with salt and pepper and then add the soup mixture. As I recall it made the best flavored gravy for the meat. I happen to have all three of these cans in my pantry recently and it reminded me of this recipe, so I wanted to share it with all of you.

Third Frugal Friday April 2023

Welcome to Friday! I hope you’ve had a good week.

My Frugal Week

It’s been a relative quiet week here. My license plate was up for renewal this month, so I paid it online and got my new license plate in the mail. Tennessee opted for new license plates in the state this year. They have a pretty blue background with white letters.

I received $10 in PayPal money from Mobile Expression this week.

Freebies

My fourteen meals from Mom’s Meals came this week and I’ll receive another fourteen meals this week.

Have you seen the peeling boiled egg hack on Tik Tok? If you use a spoon to tap the end of an egg before boiling and listen for the sound change, you’ll remove the membrane inside the egg, which makes for easier removal of the egg shell after boiling.

I tried this with a dozen eggs this week and sometimes the sound came with one tap and sometimes with two or three taps, but it worked so well. No more removing half the egg white to get the egg peeled.

Since I had boiled eggs on hand, I decided to make egg salad, but we were out of pickle relish. No worries though, as I had a jar of pickles that I chopped up in the food processor, which did the trick

Second Frugal Friday of April 2023

Welcome to Friday!

Quote of the Week
In order to gain mastery over things, we need to engage with it daily over a long amount of time
My Frugal Week

The weekend started off with a quiet Easter weekend spent at home. Then off to the retina specialist on Monday. The swelling in my eyes has gotten worse since my last visit, so he did give me an injection in one eye, and it was over quickly and wasn’t painful.

While I was there I met a man and his wife from Illinois from the same area where I grew up. It was so great to make small talk with someone from back home. When I left he said, “bye, Lockport Girl.” I thought that was a neat nickname.

On Tuesday we ran errands including a stop at the Verizon store to purchase new phones. We bought our older phones in May of 2018,  so they are five years old, and have started to show their age this week as both phones turned off due to being “overheated” which we both thought was not a coincidence.

Normally we have Verizon switch our photos to the new phones, but they wanted $30 to do that this time, so I said no. I can email them to myself rather than pay that fee.

Turns out when we did the authorize the phones the pictures moved over to the new phone automatically. I would find it hard to believe if the Verizon employee didn’t know the phones did that. There are so many fees out there these days, it’s good to stay aware.

Wednesday turned out to be a laundry day, and I ended up having one load of lights and one load of darks. Everything was folded and put away the same day.

One way we save on laundry detergent is to use the smallest amount of detergent even less than the first mark on the laundry cup provided. And we keep a tablespoon measure in our OxiClean container and even then only use it on the light clothes. No more than that is needed as It gets our clothes just as clean.

We also use the wool dryer balls to soften our clothes rather buying fabric softener sheets. Hanging clothes out to dry would save even more money, but we have allergies and cannot do that.

The website Move.org has conducted research that ranks each state on average from having the least expensive to the most expensive utility bills including electricity, natural gas, water, sewer, trash, internet, phone, and streaming services.

Tennessee ranks sixteen on the list as one of the most expensive with monthly utility costs of about $406.52, according to the report. If you’re interested they have a map of average monthly utility costs by state.

Freebies

My Insurance company is sending me two weeks of free meals from Mom’s Meals in the next few days. They will come via either UPD or FedEx and will be frozen. It works out to two meals per day for two weeks.

Our chickens have laid over sixty eggs since we’ve gotten them. I washed and cleaned three dozen on Wednesday and filled up three egg containers in our refrigerator. And at this point I am comfortable sharing our bounty with friends and family.

First Frugal Friday of April 2023

My Frugal Week

Happy Friday to all my friends here. I hope you are doing well. It’s been a good week here and I hope it’s been a good week for you too.

The weather is stormy here today, but on Wednesday summer weather arrived and we had to turn on the air already. I know that will cost more on the electric bill, but it is a necessity in the heat here.

We were in Chattanooga a lot this week and had to pay for parking a couple of times. We were frugal with the cost of that as some garages charged $2 while the other one across the street was $10, so it’s cost effective to pay attention.

Earning Money

Thanks to all of you who click onto my Amazon links when making a purchase. I earned $10.08 this month thanks to you.

We ran out of bottled ranch salad dressing this week, but I always keep some ranch packets on hand just in case and that happened this week. I have to say that the little packets taste better than store bought ranch and is very close to the taste of homemade. Homemade ranch is the very best, but I do not always have buttermilk on hand to make that.

I actually didn’t keep track of our meals this week, but know we had chicken fajitas and tacos multiple times this week since they are easy to make and delicious.

That’s all I have to report this week as we were out of the house a lot this week. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend.
