Frugal Friday ~ November 15, 2019

Welcome to Friday, I hope you've had a great week.

My daughter and I were out of town last weekend to attend the wedding of a friend. We stayed overnight two nights and used the trip to scour the thrift stores in Atlanta. We found several things we needed and a couple of things we wanted.

We did eat out a couple of times while we were there. One day we came through Atlanta and saw the Secret Service while President Trump was in town. That night we ate at the Folk Art restaurant, which was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, so that was really fun and the food was great.

This week I was back to work at school and worked three days, although the weather threatened two of those days. We did end up with a two hour delay one morning.

This week I did some mending by reattaching two buttons that were safety pinned onto a blazer we picked up at the thrift store. I also sewed up one hole in a pillow created by one of the dogs we pet sit. Also, I've been working on and sewing some presents for Christmas.

We've put off shopping for groceries and are using up what we have in our pantry and freezer. One day I even mixed up some powdered milk to have rather than go to the store for some. It always surprises me what meals we can come up with by using what we have on hand.

I've been making an inventory of what food we do have on hand. It helps me to create meals when I can look at a list of the food available. This week in anticipation of grocery shopping, I perused the grocery store sale ads online.

Cold weather arrived here this week and even though we dressed warmly and were covered up with blankets, we finally had to turn the heat on due to the cold weather. One morning it was 17 degrees outside, so definitely heater weather. That morning we had to salt the steps leading up to the house because they were icy.

My plans for the weekend include laundry, grocery shopping, and sewing. I also have some computer work to do for my dd's business.

Next week is our last week of school and then we have a week off for Thanksgiving. This year we will be going to my BIL's house, which we didn't think was going to happen as he had a house fire in October. They are living in a rented house for now and he wants us to come celebrate with them. Naturally I'll be bringing several dishes with us to share.

I hope you have a great weekend!

  1. Winter has come early for us, though it will probably warm up sooner rather than later. We had to turn the heater on earlier than normal, but we also dress warmly and threw an extra blanket on the bed so we can at least have it set very low.

    1. That's a good way to save money on heat, Anne. I have extra blankets on my bed too.

  2. Yep. winter is here. Stay warm. You are doing good using up the food you have.
That's nice that you are going to the BIL's for Thanksgiving. Sorry about his house, but much to be thankful for - his safety.

    1. Definitely grateful for their safety, Cheryl. And all their animals made it out safely too. You stay warm too. Time to hunker down and enjoy the cold weather. :)

  3. It was very cold this week, but started warming yesterday and so far today, might be darn early fall like. There is so much variation. I agree with your surprise in being able to creatively come up with meals if we had to. I know we have more food than most on hand at any given time, so really could stretch grocery shops-though my kids and husband wouldn't have agreed.

    1. I know what you mean, Sam. The kids and hubby don't always agree with our meals. My daughter is tired of spaghetti, beans and potatoes. Ugh. Those are frugal mainstays! LOL

  4. Salting steps in East TN while West TN will have high 60 temperatures by Wednesday. Earth never bores us with its changes. As you empty your pantry, we have been packing ours for months, AND no one is doing wrong but doing what is best for family.

Have a good Thanksgiving week at home. Never had a week off for Thanksgiving when I spent my weeks in a classroom. Your BIL is a honey, too.

One more week of subbing before your week off. Been missing your posting. Short blogs are better than none. Please.

    1. Thank you, Anna. Our trip last weekend fixed it so I didn't spend my time writing a blog post. We had fun though and I'm glad we went. I've been working on some others as time allows. I'm working on posting clothing items for Bailey today. She likes it when I help her out.

I'm looking forward to the week off for Thanksgiving. It is the reason we go back to school so early in August. I would rather go back later and have less weeks off during the year but they don't ask me. LOL

I hope you have a great week and enjoy those great temperatures. 60s are ideal to me.

  5. You and Bailey needed the trip last weekend! A fun-filled time for both. Bailey and you working together is always a plus, as well.

When teaching, my private school began in early August. Earliest I recall was 5 August. The school continues to start the school year in early August.

    1. Thank you, Anna. It was great to get away for a little bit.

When Bailey was in school I wanted the longer summer, but these days I like the early start since I can start working earlier in the school year.

  6. Hehee it was 55 F last night, and I needed the heater.
I would be hugging a heater if it were 17 F.

    Stay warm, Belinda.
