Monday ~ First Day Back to School

I woke up bright and early today thinking that I would NOT be working today, but then I received a call to sub around 6:30 this morning. I have never worked the first day back to school, but one of the teachers woke up sick this morning and needed a sub, so she called me. Last year I worked on the second day of school, but never on the first day until today.

I am so, so glad that I made lunches yesterday and went ahead yesterday and made today's dinner, which was Chili Mac. Turns out my daughter was sick at school today and I ended up making her a doctor's appointment after school. She is now on antibiotics. We didn't get home until after 5 o'clock and it was so nice that all I had to do when I came home was to heat up dinner and serve it along with a salad, which was also already made. Planning ahead made my day run a whole lot smoother.

Today was a good day for me sub-wise as my phone stayed busy with requests. I even had to turn down a couple of days as I was already booked. I am very grateful for each and every request.

In years past I always bought a calendar/planner to write down the days I am subbing, but I haven't done that for this school year and my calendar from last school year ran out in July. There are some beautiful planners out there that I would love to have, but they also cost money. I paid $7.00 for one I used last year and it was a plain, no frills one, but I've seen them cost a lot more than that! The Erin Condren planners are beautiful, and I would love to have one, but I cannot pay over $50 for a planner. One of our local banks gives really nice calendars to all the teachers, but unfortunately that does not trickle down to the substitutes.

My daughter made me a calendar for August, but I already need at least the rest of 2015, so this year I am just going to print them off the Internet for free instead of paying $7 or more for a planner.  I actually found one that was advertised as a printable ink saver calendar.  The school where I subbed today gave me a folder of important papers and I can keep my new calendar in the inside pocket.

I've just reached the point in my life where I am tired of some things costing so much money. I said at the beginning of the year that one of my goals in 2015 was to avoid consumerism, and this is one of those times. I think times are tough right now, and I have read and seen things financially that concern me greatly. For now, I am going into gazelle mode when it comes to spending any money.  So, for right now I am counting my blessings and grateful that I was able to work today.  :)

Live simply by not spending money you don't have.

That teacher must have really been sick to miss day 1! Lucky you to be so well prepared. I like the idea of making your own calendar for now. come Zenobia, many merchants will offer them for free! If you can hold off. I get a small pocket sized one from my Union every sept, I use that as my scheduling bible!

She was really sick with a fever. She tried to make it, but decided at the last minute that she couldn't make it. I am hoping to get a free one at the end of the year for next year. I printed through December only for that reason.

Sorry that your DD is ill. It must have been a hard first day for her.

I found first-day of the school year as one of the easier as a high-school teacher. Faculty laughed with one "been there forever" teacher who told she did not smile for 6 weeks. Untrue but funny. First day, I wore out every class with little time for them to breathe.

For me, Dollar Tree's date book schedules life. Fits easily into almost anything. I do not carry large handbags; so, a very small book fits my need. I used a smaller one when I taught and attached tiny sticky notes.

I'm sorry your daughter is sick, especially on the first day of school. :-(

I purchased planners from Dollar Tree for the first time ever this year. I really like them! I purchased a student planner for my daughter and a regular planner for me. Just a thought if the other calendar doesn't work out.

I work as a substitute teacher also, and I too always buy my planners at the Dollar Store. They are actually a dollar and very nice! I buy a larger one to keep at home on my desk and a smaller one for my bag so I have my schedule up-to-date in case teachers make requests at the schools. My husband works in finance, and I always put one of these planners in his Christmas stocking. Forget that $50 nonsense, even if they are pretty!

I substituted on the first day of school last year, but it was because they had not finished the hiring process for a new teacher. I hope you get lots of work this year. We have a shortage of substitute teachers here in the Twin Cities.

Thank you. She had a rough day as she was in pain, but she slept really well last night. The dr. told her the antibiotic would start working right away and she can already tell a difference, so we are happy for that.

Good to wear them out...less mischief. lol ;)

Thank you. She is feeling better today, so we are glad. :)

You are the second person to mention the Dollar Tree. I will definitely keep that in mind. :)

Thank you so much. There is a shortage here too, which is how I am able to work as much as I do. And they have since changed the rules to where substitutes have to have teaching certificates now. It has made it hard on teachers to try and find subs for that reason.

I'm so glad for you, Belinda, that you got a sub job for the first day! Good planning for dinner, too! I'm sure that was such a relief to have it all done ahead of time.

I print out my calendars for my own use, at home. Can't beat free! But I do buy student planners for my daughters from Dollar Tree. We were at Target the other day, and I saw they were charging about $5 for a student planner, whereas Dollar Tree's were just $1 each. Some school items are found for less at other stores, but the planner is something we always buy from Dollar Tree.

Here's wishing you a bright and successful teaching year, Belinda!

Thank you, Lili. That is so sweet of you. :) I made a run to Walmart today and they had these really nice planners, smaller than I like, but still nice for only 88¢. I decided I like mine for free even better. lol

Thought of you tonight as I was making dinner, we,re having hamburger n macaroni, but I am substituting hot Italian sausage for the beef. I only use 2 1/2 links or about -/2 lb meat. it was marked down, making it cheaper than using beef.

Oh that sounds good! We love Italian sausage here. I found some marked down today, but it was hot, which we don't care for, so I had to pass. Your dinner sounds great and very frugal. :)
