Saving Money on Food from Home at the Grocery Store

If you are trying to save money by taking your food and snacks with you when you leave the house this tip is for you.

Even with good planning on my part, there are times when we are out of the house longer than I had planned and we need something to eat.

One time when we were out of the house with no food, I decided to go to the grocery store.

Here is what I purchased:

I went to the deli and purchased 1/2 pound of the deli meat they had on sale, which cost me $2.50. I had them slice it thin to stretch it as far as possible.

I also picked up a couple of single use mayonnaise packets from the deli, so no cost for those. I also picked up a loaf of bread for 86¢ (even I was expecting to pay more for the bread).

So, for $3.36 plus tax, I was able to make us several sandwiches and put the rest into our cooler.

We bring the cooler with us every time with ice and cold drinks. I placed the deli meat inside to take home for later, and we still had some of that deli meat to use for other sandwiches at home later.

I would not be able to get that much food at a fast food establishment for such a small amount of money.

So, even when it seems unconventional, be sure to use the grocery store for food especially for times like this in your effort to save money.

  1. When I was in walking distance to a large Target with all the departments and went into the office daily, if I forgot my lunch or didn't have easy packable items, I'd go buy a single roll, Buddig ham or turkey, and a banana. I always had coffee, tea, basic snacks in my desk so could make a lunch. I want to say it came to about $1.40 then, 6+ years ago. Even if all is double now, still better than a cheap fastfood sandwich.
Yes, sometimes I splurged and hot fast food or ordered in with others, but that was rare.

    1. That is terrific, Sam, and yes, cheaper than a fast food lunch. 💕

  2. Years ago, when Glen and I would wonder around the state and just look at different sites - we always kept a cooler in the car. We would stop at some little country store and get sandwich fixins and go sit in the shade and have lunch. It was always fun and very frugal!

  3. Taking your own lunch and snacks is a great way to save money! Eating out is expensive and i'm usually just disappointed in what restaurants offer anyway.

  4. We did this when staying at a hotel in the city for my various specialist appointments. Saved us a ton of money especially since we had to fork out cash for the hotel room. Now we stay with youngest and I always bring the fixings from home for at least one meal while there.

    God bless.

  5. We got in the habit, years ago and with six kids, to NEVER leave home without drinks and snacks. Now, with just us two, the habit is to take a cooler with drinks and cheese sticks or nuts. I’m sure we have saved MUCH money over a long period of time!
