Frugal Friday

Welcome to Friday to all my frugal readers. September is definitely in the air right now as we have woken up to some very cool mornings this week, which feels great.

In My Frugal Kitchen

Do you remember when I wrote that Bailey didn't like the Cinnamon Toast Crunch creamer? Well...I decided to make French Toast the other day and used that for the milk and guess what? She loved it! So, we will still use it up, avoid food waste, and not waste the money that was spent on it.

We made more Chick-fil-A chicken sandwiches this week.

Kroger has peanut butter on sale for 99¢ this week along with eight ounce blocks of cheese for 4/$5.00.

My Amazon grocery order arrived this week and now we are stocked up on tuna and green beans.

Doing the math this week, I refigured what it cost me to make one gallon of tea these days. Look for an upcoming blog post on that soon. I also figured the cost of eggs right now, which works out to 8¢ each according to current Walmart prices. Eggs are always a good and frugal food to have on hand.

Other Frugal Things

I made a goal this week to list one item on eBay everyday and I succeeded.

I've been watching Prepper Princess videos again on YouTube this week. She used to have mostly prepper videos on her channel, but now has multiple videos on saving money, which is right up my alley.

PP mentioned in one of her videos that she adds 20% of water to all her shampoos and soaps. I use Neutrogena T-gel shampoo, which is expensive at $8.50 a bottle, so I added water to mine this week to make it s-t-r-e-t-c-h farther. I already do this with my Dawn dishwashing detergent to make it stretch as far as possible.

I earned a $10 gift card to Amazon from Microsoft Rewards this week. I used it to purchase 12 cans of Hormel Ham for our pantry. I have this ham as one of my subscribe and save items on Amazon. The price I've been paying for the ham for the 12 cans is $9.71.

I don't know about you, but I've been watching the prices on Amazon fluctuate widely lately. This ham is going for $45 right now and the price I paid is nowhere to be found. I've noticed that the prices on some of their items is so high. I can't wait until we can go back to grocery shopping the way we used to do it.

Miss B and I both cut our hair at home this week using this Wahl hair trimmer. It's cordless and I can take it outside to do my own hair, which makes for easier cleanup. I used the two inch comb on my hair, which is just the way I like it. Last time I cut my hair I used a smaller comb and it was so short I didn't have to trim it again until now.

This week I rearranged my office space and it is much more functional than it was before, which is a win-win for me.

  1. Sounds like a good frugal week for you! Today was grocery shopping day for me, I spent $170. but saved $63 between coupons, sales and BOGOs. It was my first spending at all for this month, and now I'm fully stocked for the rest of the month. I also made a couple loaves of zucchini bread this week to use up some excess I had. That about covers it for me this week :)

    1. Wow, that is a great amount of savings, Martha. Way to go! I love it when we are stocked up for the month and don't have to go back to the store for a while.

  2. Ok not sure if I accidentally hit publish or not so I am starting over! If I did please delete the first one!
I noticed Amazon prices are rising also. Since we are doing no travel, entertaining or being entertained I decided I would order one dehydrated stock up item every other week (Nothing that I can do from home with fruits or veggies, but things like dehydrated sour cream, etc) They have been going crazy lately. Up then down a little then soaring. Now I play a waiting game for whichever product drops in price first. Since Dr. Fauci just issued his statement that we might be in for a difficult fall. I thought I might as well get ready for it now.

    1. That is good planning on your part, Anne to get ready for fall now. The prices on Amazon on some things are so high that I can't imagine paying those prices.

  3. I have a can of that very ham. How do you use it?

    1. Here is one way I use it:

      Fluffy Baked Omelet

      Ingredients:
      6 eggs, separated
      ¼ cup cornstarch
      ⅓ cup water
      1 teaspoon salt
      ½ teaspoon Tabasco sauce
      1 cup chopped ham
      1 cup cheddar cheese
      Optional: mushrooms, onions, green peppers.
      2 tablespoons butter

      Directions:

Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry.
Quickly beat egg yolks with remaining ingredients.
      Fold into beaten egg whites.
Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a skillet.
      Pour in omelet mixture.
Cook over low heat until lightly browned on bottom, about 5 minutes.
      Finish cooking in the oven.

      15 minutes at 350 degrees.
      Loosen omelet, cut and serve.

    2. You're welcome. It also makes a good meat to have for dinner. I simply heat it up in a skillet and serve it with side dishes.

  4. Been watering down shampoo, dish soap and laundry detergent for years. Saw a stylist 'to the stars' on TV talk about shampoo. Said no matter how gentle it claims to be it is still too detergent for hair. I do a 1/3 bottle shampoo to 2/3 water. Get so much better sudsing.
I don't know that I have ever intentionally looked on Amazon for anything! LOL

I had to stop watching PP quite a while back - she just got too dark and bitter for my taste. It seemed her whole demeanor changed. I mean we are all going through stuff - but no need to be angry about it. It is what it is.

I got the cheese sale this week. I never pass a deal on cheese!! LOL
    French toast sounds yummy!

    1. Thank you, Cheryl. And I kwym with PP. She is talking about a stalker right now, so I pass over those videos. Who has time for that you know?

That's great about the 2/3 water to 1/3 shampoo. I'm going to do mine even more now.

So glad you were able to get in on the cheese deal, that was a good one!

  5. Wow-you did really well. I love when something bound for the bin is reused like the French toast hack!

  6. Sounds like you had some great savings.
I don't get amazon either. Prices are all over the place. Glad you bought the ham when you did.
I love peanut butter, and krogers honey peanut butter is my favorite. I need to buy a few more jars to have on hand.
    Sounds like yummy french toast.
Hope you have a great weekend.

  7. That is a great price for eggs! I'm impressed you can get them at that price, but it's awesome & like you said, a great source of protein.

I'm always looking in the fridge, trying to see what needs to be used (or, repurposed, in some cases) to avoid waste. I don't win them all, but try to catch a lot of things.

    1. We are pretty good about eating leftovers for breakfast or lunch the next day. Otherwise it's eggs or oatmeal. My dd loves eggs, so that makes it easy.

  8. I would tell her about the creamer use. It would be a great lesson to her about how to use things and not throw food away.

When I was young, a child, I asked Mama why she put water in the Prell shampoo. She said it lathered better causing her to use less.

    1. I may tell her in a few weeks after she has forgotten about it.

I love the smell of Prell shampoo, but haven't really used it as an adult.

  9. Tell me about Amazon and those wildly fluctuating prices! I needed a couple of vitamins this week and they were three times the amount before the pandemic. Talk about sticker shock. I found them cheaper at WalMart online. I noticed WalMart is fluctuating on prices but not as bad as Amazon.

I was reading the replies. I saw that Anne mentioned about Fauci's long Fall. When the virus went rampant in Spring I told my DH we need to worry about Fall. I had a feeling it was going to be long and hard. DH & I started a mass stock-up in Spring to prepare for Fall. It was challenging to stock up during a pandemic in a new way, lol. I learned so much. You think you are so prepared. Then you realize that there are things you never ever thought of. When my DH got sick and we thought he had Covid, my thermometer went on the blink. I had to call a loved one to buy me a new thermometer. I could not leave the home and just run down and get one. Thank gosh he was able to get one to me quickly. He's a nurse so he was such a godsend. Then my old thermometer started working. Having two thermometers have really helped. I was able to take my DH's temp twice to make sure numbers matched and monitor symptoms. Never thought we needed two thermometers in the home. When I went shopping the next time I really stocked up on tiny little thermometer batteries, lol.

    1. I agree with you on the Amazon prices fluctuating wildly, Safyne. Than you for the reminder. I needed a thermometer this week and could not find mine s I borrowed one from Bailey. I need to get another one to have on hand for these times. I've had to replace the batteries in my Dad's for him before, so it is a good idea to have more than one on hand. I'm glad you were able to get one quickly. Stocking up on the batteries is a great idea too.
