Second Frugal Friday of January 2026

Welcome to Frugal Friday
Each Friday here at Frugal Workshop, I love sharing the frugal wins, quiet savings, and simple strategies that helped us stretch our budget over the past seven days. It’s a gentle look back at the small things that make a big difference.
My Frugal Week
Last Friday we had friends come to see us and take us out to lunch at a local BBQ restaurant. They were very good friends to both of my parents and we did a little trading while they were here.
I gave him several things that belonged to my Dad that he could add to his knife collection. He brought me cereal and peanut butter. He worked for Post cereal company in Battle Creek, Michigan for years and can buy from the company store.
Afterwards Bailey and I went thrifting and grocery shopping. I picked up an LL Bean winter coat for myself for $3.00. Losing weight has made thrift store shopping so much more fun for me because I can fit in smaller clothes these days. It’s like a treasure hunt, which I love.
One of the items we picked up was an escape ladder for $15 in case of fire as we are upstairs and it’s a long way to the ground if we had to escape. Bailey found one this summer and she wanted one for my bedroom too, so now both bedrooms have one just in case.
Cheryl over at Cheryl’s Frugal Corner, wrote about safety items this week, which led me to Google free smoke detectors. I found two in my area one for the state of Tennessee and one for the American Red Cross. If you know of someone who needs smoke detectors in their home please share this with them.
On Sunday I woke up ready to take down all the Christmas decorations. I took both trees down that were inside the house along with all the decorations. We will miss the festive look from the holidays, but it sure is good to have the house back in order. Thanks to all of that I had over 10,000 steps in before dinner time.
I had tutoring sessions on Monday and Thursday this week. Monday is usually my laundry day, but I was still able to get that done too and run a couple of errands since I was in town.
On Wednesday I cleaned in my bedroom and stripped down the bed, washing all the bedclothes and putting on a heated mattress pad I received for Christmas. Washing bed clothes in winter time is a big job with all those blankets on the bed. It’s still been warm here this week, so I’ve not had the chance to try it yet.
We had roofers come out on Thursday and give us an estimate for a new roof, which the house needs. We are taking our cats for vaccinations on Friday at the low cost clinic for $15 each. It’s been a very productive week here juggling several things, getting ready for the next consignment sale in April, and cleaning as usual.
How was your week?

I always enjoy reading your frugal Friday messages. You accomplished a lot of things this week. I've been trying to finish taking down the Christmas items, but I caught COVID. I went to my great niece's birthday party last Saturday. I assume I picked it up there. My husband picked up one of those 3 in 1 tests. It tests for Flu A, Flu B, and Covid. I was a bit shocked it was COVID. My doctor called in the Paxlovid medication. I had so many things on my to do list that needs to be postponed. I hate that. My husband was able to take care of few things. We have a septic system. He called and had them come out to pump the system. It's about a once every 3 year project. He was also able to book an airline ticket for later this year. He doesn't mind doing errands (I do not like them at all.). I called in some medication for our dogs. He will pick them up today. One needed the heart/flea and tick meds and the other is a diabetic. The diabetic takes insulin 2 times a day. You are very inspirational. Good luck with your roof quote. We put on a new roof last year. It was damaged during Hurricane Helene.

Oh no Erin! I’m so sorry you ended up with Covid. I hope the Paxlovid is helping. That would definitely put a wrench in your plans. I’m glad your husband was able to handle a few of your errands. We are getting our cats rabies and feline distemper shots today. There is always something to do to keep us busy, you know? I hope you are feeling better and continue to improve each day. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog.
DeleteSounds like you got alot accomplished mover the week. Great score on the ll bean jacket. Have a great day, Janie
ReplyDeleteThank you, Janie.
DeleteYou did really well on the $3 coat. I was slow recovering from the post Christmas well into January flu/ cold so just starting to get things done. I've been pretty anxious too with the local state of federal issues. It's really hard to focus on home life.
ReplyDeleteI completely understand, Sam. You all have had it rough up there this week. My heart goes out to you all. I’m glad you’re feeling better after being sick after Christmas.
DeleteLooks like a great week and congrats! On the coat. I’m missing my thrift store ventures these days, as I am staying with my husband around the clock, who does NOT like thrift stores. Ha! I wanted to tell you I started using the lavender epsom salts in my laundry this week. It smells SO good! Thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Penny. Oh, I’m so glad you like the lavender epsom salts. It does smell so good!
DeleteGreat deal on the coat. You had quite a nice, accomplished week.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the mention - that is a great idea on the smoke alarms. They would make a great lifesaving gift for someone as well.
Most definitely, Cheryl. Thank you!
DeleteYou have been busy...I miss the tree too..it made the living room so much brighter. Soon though it will be Spring. Good deal on your coat!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Vickie. Yes, it will be spring time before we know it.
DeleteWhat a find with that LL Bean coat! Nice work. I like the Christmas decorations, but like you, I also enjoy it when everything is put back & organized again. - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteThank you! I was tickled to find the coat.
DeleteA heated mattress pad is a game changer. I usually turn in on to 3 a half hour before bed and have the timer set to 2 hours. It is still toasty when I wake up. I have gotten everything from autumn decorating and Christmas put away. It feels so good.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely feels good to have it all put away, Amy. That’s a great idea to turn your heated pad on early.
DeleteGlad you had a nice visit with friends and yummy BBQ. You find the best finds at the thrift stores. An escape ladder and smoke detectors are such a good idea to offer peace of mind. I'm sure you will enjoy your heated mattress pad; it will make your bed so warm and cozy.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great weekend. It is supposed to be rainy here.
Thank you, Kathy. I am loving the heated mattress pad as I got to try it for the first time this morning around 5 am. I’m going to love it!
DeleteDear Belinda, wow, you scored very well on the coat, dear friend! Keep up the amazing work, you are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWonderful deal on that coat. I do hope the roof fix is not too expensive.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
