Fourth Frugal Friday of February 2022

Welcome to Friday!

My Frugal Week

This past week I had ordered a new pair of Xero shoes from Zappos, but when they came they were too tight around my foot, so I sent them back. UPS picked them up the next day and I received an email letting me know my refund was issued the very next day. That is why I love to use Zappos as their service is wonderful.

Ever since I had cellulitis in my left leg, that foot will swell during the day, so I ordered a compression ankle sock to see if that would help. The shipping was $10.99, so I looked around for a promo code and finally found one for free shipping that worked. It took me three or four tries using various codes, but by doing that I was able to save $10.99 on the shipping

Bailey had oral surgery with anesthesia on Monday. We bought plenty of soft foods for her to eat for a few days afterwards such as yogurt, applesauce, pudding, and potatoes for mashing. The first day I made her a broccoli cheese soup and used my stick blender to make it smooth. I did the same thing with the potato soup later in the week.

Mom remains in rehab for now, although she wants to come home, but needs the therapy for her broken arm. So we wait and see what improvements will come for her. I call her everyday, multiple times per day, because she is lonely and scared. My heart breaks for her, but I know she needs to be there for now.

The rehab facility has asked me to bring Mom some clothes to wear. The problem is that Mom lost weight during the pandemic and her clothes no longer fit. The ones she has with her are falling off as she is down to 116 pounds. I’m not even sure what her new size would be and I’ve been looking online for pants that will fit her, looking for petite length and tapered leg because her legs are so tiny.

I decided to go looking in her bedroom for items that would work and I did find several things such as Capri length pajama pants. They have an elastic waist and should work even if they are big in the legs. I also took two pair of pants she got for Christmas and hemmed those. Doing this saved money over buying new especially since I don’t know her size right now.

Walmart issued me a refund of $192 after I sent back an appliance that wouldn’t work.

Earning Money

I sold an item on eBay this week and earned $16.50 on the item.

Avoiding Spending

I stayed out of the stores as usual and didn’t buy any groceries online. We are using what we have here to make meals. There is plenty in our pantry, so it’s just getting in there and taking the effort to prep food.

Saving Money In My Frugal Kitchen

This week I took the produce drawers out of the refrigerator and gave them a good scrubbing. I also washed out the refrigerator inside and out.

I did all the usual things like using up the leftovers, freezing bread rather than letting it go to waste, etc.

Meals This Week ~ Lots of soup on the menu this week for Bailey.

Friday: Grilled Beef Hot Dogs, Carrots, Cooked Apples, Rice & Cheese

Saturday: Chicken, Rice, Lettuce & Tomatoes, Broccoli

Sunday: Beefy Baked Beans, Vegetable Stir Fry, Radishes, and Beets

Monday & Tuesday: Homemade Broccoli & Cheese Soup

Wednesday & Thursday: Homemade Potato Soup

That is all the news to report on our frugal week in Tennessee. Thank you for dropping by, you are always welcome here. We would love to hear about your week in the comment section.

  1. Aww Belinda. My heart breaks for your mom. I hope her arm heals fast & she can return home soon. I'm of similar size as your mom and I wear a size 4. Size 3 if it's anything Juniors and size Small if it's not numbered sizes. I hope this will help :)

Hope Bailey has recovered from her oral surgery. Hope you both have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Oh, thank you so much, Ms. Goose. That helps me so much about the sizes with Mom. I was looking at online calculators and they were saying small too, but Mom didn’t think that would work. But, I don’t think even she realizes how little she is now.

Thank you again. I hope you have a great weekend too.

  2. I used to work in a nursing home. Go for comfort for your mom. Get her a few colorful sweatpants and pretty pullover shirts. That will make her PT so much more comfortable. Sounds like you had a busy week!! I look for free shipping codes, but rarely find them.

    1. That sounds great, Penny. She said sweatpants would be good, so I will definitely get her some of those. Comfort sounds good to me too.

  3. I hope your mom is able to get out of rehab quickly, and is on the mend! I'm sure it is such a scary transition for her, not to know others & to feel out of sorts.

  5. I am so sorry about your Mom. My heart breaks for her. I know she must have so much anxiety & fear now. I hope her rehab goes quickly so she can be back home.

If she is small frame look in the teen clothes. You can find her soft shirts, yoga pants, soft nightgowns even shoes if she has small feet. I wear kids shoes & they are super cute, comfortable & great prices. The clothes are not "kid or teen" looking. You can find many cute things for us ladies in our older years that look good on us and still stylish for our age.

I am sure Bailey has a pulse for teen clothes with her resale connections. So you can find your Mom things that are frugal & comfy.

I hope Bailey feels better soon too.

I spent a lot of money to save money this week. I am very happy with my purchase. DH & I splurged on a huge refrigerator. Our refrigerator was tiny and it was becoming a problem. We were starting to see food waste because we couldn't find the food. :)

I redid the whole kitchen this week. It was hard work. It is so much better & I know will be a lot more frugal. I bought a new microwave cart that doubles as another cupboard. In the cupboard I put all the food that is close to expiring or were special treats so DH & I can get to them easier. We are already power using it. We love this change so much. I made my little "pantry" into a shelf stable essential pantry.

    1. Thank you, Safyne. That is a good idea to look in the teen section of clothing. I will be sure to do that.

I like the idea of keeping your food that is about to go out of date on your new microwave cart. Sounds like you are on the ball organizing your kitchen. I like puttering around in mine keeping things in order.

  6. Hope that Bailey's mouth is healing well. Sounds like you made her lots of yummy soups.
Sorry that your Mom is sad about the rehab, but I hope the therapy is helping and she will get stronger each day. Glad you were able to hem the pants to save on new purchases. I agree with the sweatpants and loose tops over her arm cast if she has any of those at home. Would she want to go to any of the activities? Perhaps the singing or church services or crafts. Hopefully she will be able to go home soon.
So glad you were able to get a refund on the shoes and appliance. Good customer service is the best.
Hope you have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you, Kathy. Bailey is doing better every day and Mom is about the same for now. She is worried about Covid, so she won’t do any activities, but I did encourage her to get her hair done in their beauty salon. I think she would really like that.

I hope you have a good weekend too.

  7. Good money week!
My sister was in rehab for several weeks with her shoulder break and hated every single moment. She was just pitiful the whole time there. Gong home sure did make a wonderful difference. Hope you mom get home soon. Just tell her to do her exercises - that is what will get her home. Hope your daughter s feeling much better as well.
    Have a good weekend.

    1. Thank you, Cheryl. Bailey is getting better every day and Mom is hanging in there. Her attitude was really positive when I called last night, so that made me feel much better. I will tell her to keep up on her exercises. Thank you for the encouragement.

  8. That is so hard for your mom. She would wear an extra small or a 4 in pants.

  10. Oh wow she really lost a lot of weight. Hope you are able to find some comfortable clothes for her. My mom was in rehab for awhile and found that the more she participated in everything the faster she got better. Sounds like your Mom has a positive attitude! I'm glad Bailey is getting better too.
