Frugal Friday ~ August 2, 2019

We bartered for this shopping cart last week. We were at a yard sale and the man running the sale wanted $5 for it. My daughter has been wanting one of these to easily move her inventory around the house.

As the man was placing it into our car he noticed a cell phone holder we were not using. I told him he could have it if he wanted it and he was so tickled and told me the cart was paid in full. I didn't expect that as I was just going to let him have the cell phone charger for free, so that was a nice surprise.

This is the last week of summer vacation before school starts back on Tuesday. I already have six days of subbing scheduled for August and five for September. So, this week I've been working on fixing up my sub bag.

Last year I left my extension cord somewhere in one of the classrooms. I thought about buying a new one, but found one around the house I'm going to use instead.

Same with paper towels, I'm going to tuck some flannel cloths in my bag instead of buying paper towels. Little savings along the way, but they do add up over time.

June & July are in the books now as August 1st rolled around yesterday. We had a good summer, spending as little as possible, watching every penny. Going back to work will definitely boost my income and be welcomed.

Yesterday I noticed the water was low in the half barrel we keep under the gutter downspout. The cats like to drink from this, so I took three buckets of water and filled it up yesterday. About an hour later a huge thunderstorm came, which would have filled it, so my efforts were futile. LOL

We stayed home all week except for Thursday evening when we went to McKay's Used Books. We traded several books for new to us books and had a good time.

I love it when things work out, for the bartering. How nice! I'm with you on going back to work. I am not looking forward to it at all (understatement), but getting a paycheck again will definitely be a nice change. :-)

Sounds like a good one. Love the little cart - what a deal. It is hard to believe it is school time already. Many schools here have already gone back. I am glad you already have some days scheduled!

Sounds like a good week. How exciting that you get to sub... are the kids good to you? A used book store sounds great. I regularly visit a thrift store where all books are only 10 cents. They keep a huge supply of good books and I feel like I am stealing. ha!

Definitely on the paycheck! It will be a nice change.

Thank you, Cheryl. I'm so surprised that some schools have already gone back where you live. Summers are not what they used to be.

The students are normally good for me, although sometimes I'll get one who misbehaves. I do love seeing them though. They get excited when they see me and know they will have a sub. LOL

How neat on the 10¢ books, that is a great price!!

That was quite a bargain, a shopping cart for 5.00 and then for a swap !
School's returned here yesterday, back in the swing of things, I think all the children were ready....
Good luck !

We thought it was bargain too, Jo. It's great to use while moving big and or multiple things around the house. Cheryl mentioned that some schools have already went back where she lives too. They start sooner than ever before these days. Thanks for the good wishes. :)

It seems many of us are trying to kick the paper towel habit! I am thinking about how I might be able to do some reselling with my daughter once the youngest is off to school and settled. She has the good style taste and I have the time. With more purging, we should certainly have the space for inventory.

That would be great for you all, Sam. Space will definitely help. We are outgrowing our space right now and looking for it where ever we can find it. I'm so excited for you!

I would love to at least cut back on paper towels. TheHub is a paper towel hound and never uses just one when he can tear off four. I even only buy the ones that have a choice of sizes and he still uses at least 4 full size ones.
I don't need to resell, I just need to sell a lot of what we already own. We will be downsizing before too long and will have no use or space for a lot of what we currently have.

My daughter started her reselling by selling items she already owned too. It's a great way to get rid of stuff and even make a little bit of money in the process.

My dad is the same way with paper towels. Just takes the roll and lets it go. Ugh.

When school began in early August, I wanted nothing more than to be in a swimming pool. My NJ childhood schools began the day after Labor Day. You are a brave soul to sub. It's impossible for a teacher to leave adequate plans for a sub.

Neat swap on the grocery cart. 11 days already set to sub must be encouraging. Looking good so far. Hope there is no subbing in the gym while it is still hot.

5 or 6 of the days are in the gym, Anna. I plan on bring plenty of ice and cool washcloths and hope for cool weather. Too bad they don't have a swimming pool like we did in Illinois. That's where I would love to be. We started after Labor Day back then too. And I would not mind going back to that schedule.

Have you read that Athens, TX is beginning a 4-day school week, Monday through Thursday this year? Longer school days, longer school year, and one school offers lunch to all students on Friday.

Many of my family members live in Chattanooga and we always go to McKay's while there. It is great that you already have some teaching days scheduled for the new school year.

Belinda said...

Thank you, DLL. I'm happy to already have days to sub. How neat that you like McKay's too. We love it and have saved a lot of money over the years because of them. It's a small world. :)

I had not heard that, Anna. That would be very nice for students and teachers. This year our school system earned a grant to provide free breakfasts and free lunches. They've had it in the past, but lost it, but are tickled to have it back this year again.
