First Frugal Friday of December 2025

Welcome to Frugal Friday

Each Friday here at Frugal Workshop, I love sharing the little frugal wins, quiet savings, and simple strategies that helped us stretch our budget over the past seven days. It’s a gentle look back at the small things that make a big difference.

My Frugal Week

We stayed home on Black Friday and spent no money. We also spent no money on Cyber Monday either. How about you? There were some good sales out there though, and it would be prudent to buy those things you needed when they were on sale.

This week I ran out of my cats favorite food. We substituted with a bag of Aldi cat food, which they don’t care for and were not eating. I did have some wet cat food and ran out of that on Tuesday, so I ended up giving them a can of tuna with oil I accidentally bought and they loved that. I was able to appease them with that until I went grocery shopping on Wednesday and bought their favorite brand.

On Monday I did the laundry, which helped me get in over 13,000 steps that day. I also decluttered a little, stopped in at People Helping People for free produce, and Farm Bureau for free calendars.

Christmas

I joined a local Christmas card exchange this week. I have plenty of cards and stamps and included both mine and Bailey’s names. The rules are that you must send three cards off the list, but can send more if you choose to do so.

I miss the days when many people sent Christmas cards, but understand that this tradition is not as celebrated as it was in the past.

We pulled out our Christmas tree along with decorations and have been slowly decorating our home for Christmas.

Laundry

We use vinegar, bought at the lowest price, in our washing machine.

Freebies

Our local Facebook group starts a chat every now and then asking people to mention something they are needing. I had just put a chair mat on my Amazon wish list, so I mentioned that and someone offered one up momentarily. So now I have one under my office chair.

I also received free calendars, shampoo and conditioner samples, one quart mason jar, three small cookbooks, and a few magazines.

Saving on Electric

No heat or air conditioning this week.

Savings of the Week

Gordons - GFS has their boneless, skinless chicken breasts on sale in the forty pound box (four bags at 10 pounds each) for $52.00, which makes them $1.30 per pound. I went on Wednesday and picked up a box, which is now in my freezer.

Saving Money on Entertainment

Bailey signed us up for a year of Hulu and Disney for $4.99 a month for one year, and HBO Max for $2.99 a month for one year. I’ll pay the $7.99 for Netflix, while she’ll pay the $7.99 for those two. We will have plenty of options to stream entertainment for the next year.

What I've been Reading This Week

This week I picked up eight free books from Freebooksy. My favorite genre is nonfiction, which doesn’t always have a lot of free titles to choose from, but did this week.

How was your week?

Thank you for dropping by my frugal blog, you are always welcome here.

We would love to hear all about your week in the comment section.

  1. I liked to receive and send cards in the past too, but wow has it become expensive. I'll get a few out and will likely get some mailed back. Not shopping when you can stretch one more day is a good win.

    1. Yes, it has gotten so expensive to mail cards these days. Yes, one more day of stretching is definitely a winning day.

  2. I still send Christmas Cards. Since the cost to mail them is .78, I try to keep an eye out for nice cards at thrift prices. This year over half (21?) are from a rummage sale they are Hallmark. They were in one of their large 40 count boxes. I sent 62 this year. Gone are the days when I would go into Hallmark and buy 2 of the large boxes either on sale before or after the holidays.
I did not shop on Black Friday, too many memories of working retail that day. I did go to CVS with some Extra Care bucks and got some Hersheys Chocolate to bake with. I decided to change up my cookie list this year and nothing requires chocolate chips. I can't convince myself to pay 2/$9 for the regular bag. Filled Raisin cookies it is.
    20 more days...

  3. I have never had a cat that likes Aldi wet cat food. Never tried the dry. Great deal on the chicken! You should be set for a long while. I can't imagine no heat!!! LOL
    Have a nice weekend.

    1. Thanks, Cheryl. Don’t try the Aldi dry, Bailey read online that a lot of cats don’t like it. I was bundled up today, but still no heat yet. I know it’s coming though. Lol

  4. Your cats are like my cat-very picky. They know what they like. The chickens are even picky..I bought different mealworms and they would not eat them. It was a big bag so I bought their favorite and mixed it with the one that they didn't care for. They ate with no problem. Have a great weekend.

    1. Omg, that is so funny about the mealworms, Vickie. I loved giving them to my chickens when we had them.

  5. Dear Belinda, you have cats!!! How wonderful! As you know from visiting my blog, I love nature, animals...and cats! Oh yes! :)
Here in Montreal the temperatures are said to dip to -25C....yes, the Polar Vortex is making its way! I live in a 6th floor apartment where the heat is included in the rent, but even if I lived in a house with the temperatures this low there is risk of pipes freezing, etc., so I couldn't do without heat. Not to mention my zebra finch and myself! LOL! :)
You are doing so well at getting some free items, buying things on sale, etc.
I had an appointment at my ophthalmologist on Tuesday, and it is in a hospital. I went to visit the chapel in the hospital and took some photos which I will share in an upcoming blog post. Next to the chapel there is a hospital library. They had a trolley outside the library with a sign "free" ("gratuit" in French). There were books and magazines, but I saw nothing that appealed to me so I didn't take any. It's so nice to see free things like this once in a while.
Thank you so much for all you share, dear friend, your posts are such a joy to read!

    1. Brrrrr….its cold up there, Linda. That is so nice your heat is included in the heat. And I love getting free things, it is very nice to see a free cart every now and then. You are always so sweet, thank you.

  6. Another great week, Belinda! I'm glad you were able to get your chair mat and lots of other goodies. The chicken was a great buy! I've been able to go without heat, but have had to turn on the air conditioner for an hour or two in the afternoons - still not bad considering here in Florida the AC is usually running day and night. No shopping for me on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, either. If I can ever get myself back on a decent blogging schedule, I'd really like to start doing Frugal Fridays again, too. Have a great weekend! :)

    1. Thank you, Martha. I would love to read frugal Friday posts from you, that would be so great! I can imagine you all still need the ac down there is sunny Florida. I have a friend in Jacksonville and they still need the ac too.

  7. You had a great week and those prices for the streaming services are excellent. You will have so much to choose from to watch.

    God bless.

  8. I giggled at the idea of you working on multiple options to appease the cats palate ;-) They sound like fun. I've never been a Christmas card person, although I do enjoy receiving them. I am getting family portraits taken (although too late to use for cards) after not having them done in at least 15 years. I'm excited to have them done & need to figure out what everyone is going to wear!

How neat to have your family portraits made after 15 years!
