Third Frugal Friday of June 2025

Welcome to Frugal Friday!

Music

Good Riddance is a beautiful song written by Billie Joe Armstrong of the band Green Day and was released in 1997. The song captures the complex emotions that come with ending a chapter in life, acknowledging both the good and the bad, and wishing the other person well. 💕

My Frugal Week

We sold a box fan on Facebook Marketplace for $8.00 that I dug out of the space in the kitchen that I cleaned out last week. We also sold a keyboard for $20, a guitar for $50 and my Ninja Food Grill for $50, all on Facebook Marketplace.

I love not having to pay any fees to sell items. And now we have more than enough yard sale cash for this week without having to dip into any of our financial accounts.

This week I was able to add two items to my Christmas bin for presents. I found both items at yard sales over the weekend. I also went to two different estate sales, which I find sad as I walk through someone’s once proud home (as my grandma would say), and see their stuff for sale.

I did some weeding in the yard and repotted my two free tomato plants and red pepper plant. I also put a tomato cage around the tomatoes as they were leaning. And I repotted my dill and catnip plants. I like to break off a leaf from the cat nip and let the cats roll around in it.

Even though it is summer time, I’ve not been sleeping with the window air conditioner on in my bedroom. I rarely even use a fan, which saves on our electric bill.

Freebies

Last weekend when we were out and about I noticed some items on a curb that looked free, so I turned down that road to check it out. Sure enough, there was a free sign attached and Bailey wanted this mirror, so we loaded it into the car and off we went.

Joy of the Week

My friend's husband passed away this week.

He loved to make a garden every year and this year was no exception.

After his funeral her friends and family went to her home and helped her pick, break and can the green beans he had planted this year. The people were in her living room, front porch, and yard breaking all those green beans.

She ended up with 45 pints and 28 quarts of green beans. She said would have never gotten them done by herself and that her husband would have been proud. Wasn't that just the sweetest? There is just nothing like friends and family to step up to the plate like this when needed.

Savings of the Week

Food City had these Bertolli Sustainably extra virgin olive oil (16 ounces) on closeout for $6.50, which is a savings of about $2 over the Walmart price, so I picked up two for our pantry.

Question of the Week

Do you have an Ollie's where you live or have you every shopped in one?

I've not been to one before, but did stop in on Wednesday, as I had an appointment right next door and needed to pass some time.

Now, I did buy some everything bagel seasoning and a hummingbird feeder, but other than that, I was unimpressed by their prices. The items I normally purchase can all be had somewhere else for less, so I probably won't be making this a regular shop. But, I'm curious as to what you think about it if you've shopped there.

Saving Money on Entertainment

This week I watched The Dollmaker for free on Tubi. This film, created in 1984, features Jane Fonda as the character of Gerti. Her and husband Clovis along with their children move from their rural Appalachian home to Detroit for Clovis to find work. Jane Fonda won an Emmy for her portrayal of Gerti and I can see why. Her steadfast determination to save and be a wise steward shines through.

  3. I love Ollie's! If you join Ollie's Army, they send you cards 4x per year that gives you 15% off your entire purchase. Also, after you spend a cumulative $200 (no time limit), they send you a card for 10% off. Obviously, not as cheap as thrifts or yard sales, but I find at least a few things to buy every time I get a discount card. A few weeks ago with the summer card, we got a Oster skillet that retails for $64 for $8.50 and my husband got a huge bag of grass seed for $8 that was selling at Lowe's for $30. It can be a hit or miss type store since they sell mostly closeout items, but I'm a fan.

  4. Sorry for the loss of your friend. I just love that all got together for a 'bean' fest! That is too cool.
I really like Ollies - they are like what Big Lots used to be here. Our Ollies has really good prices - much cheaper than most places. Books are a steal, unless buying at a yard sale. I have their store card and get many discounts over the year - it is always used at the holidays!

  5. I love the green bean “party”! What a sweet thing for her friends to do for her. I’m going to hunt for the movie The Dollmaker. It sounds like one I’d enjoy. We have an Ollies near my granddaughters school. I might go 2x year. The books are fun to look through, but I don’t see much more there that interests me. Great job on your marketplace sales!

    1. Yes, I thought that was so sweet of her friends to do too, Penny. Thank you, we did have a good week on Facebook Marketplace this week.

  6. That was very sweet of everyone to help with the beans.

I love Ollie's, but it can be hit or miss and depends on what you are looking for. Sometimes I get just a couple of things, other times a cart full. They have good deals on snack items sometimes, especially discounted near end of date things. The book section is great for kids and it's the cheapest place for area rugs. Inventory varies since it is a lot of closeout things, but I have gotten great deals on so many things, less than half the price of Walmart and places.

    1. I thought it was sweet of them too, Jess. Sounds like you do really well at Ollie’s at times. Thank you for letting me know. They sent me a 15% off discount, so I’ll definitely want to check again after reading your experiences there.

  7. How wonderful to have friends so willing to help get those beans done. We don't have an Ollie's here. Living in Canada means different stores to shop in. Though we do have a Dollar Store and a Dollar Tree.

    God bless.

    1. Yes, it’s so great to have such good friends. Dollar tree is a favorite of mine for their low prices on some good household needs.

  8. I love what you all did for your friend. Every time she opens a can of beans, she will remember the love of friends and family.
Hope you have some yummy tomatoes. Aren't cats the funniest when they are drunk on catnip.
It looks like we are going to have some hot weather next week. Our power was off for about 12 hours today which was strange as we didn't have any storms or wind today.
We have an Ollies about 30 min away, so I have only been there a time or two. I wasn't impressed, so it isn't worth the drive for me.
Hope you have a good weekend.

OMG, yes on drunken days on catnip! 😂 And feisty, 😂

Oh no on losing power for so long! We lost power one day this week after a storm came through, but not for that long. I’m glad yours is back up now.

Yes, this Ollie’s here is about an hour away, so I’m with you in not going very often.

I hope you have a great weekend too!
