Frugal Things I Did This Week

Frugal Things I Did This Week...

~ Repaired a kitchen cabinet with hot glue.

~ Made more homemade ranch dressing using our favorite recipe

~ I signed up for the Sunbelt Bakery Friends program and earned enough points (only 500 needed, easy to earn) to get a free Sunbelt Bakery product coupon. Click here to join: Sunbelt

Repaired a tear in a rug with duct tape making it useful again.

~ Printed January through May 2016 Calendar online for free. Turns out I really like the free online calendars and I already have days scheduled for 2016, so I needed to print those months.

~ Cancelled Netflix, which will save me $8.77 per month. We were not watching enough movies to justify the cost and then when we did mail them back the waiting time for a new movie had increased from two days to almost a week, which was not worth it to me, so I cancelled for these reasons.

~ Cut the use of the air conditioners with the cooler weather and have already seen a reduction in the electric bill.

~ Received an email from Little Debbie snack cakes. Normally I would have just deleted it, but this email had coupons inside to print. Sometimes I am too quick to delete emails, and in doing so lose out on a coupon or two, which is something I need to work on.

~ I was only scheduled to work one day this week, but turns out I ended up working all five days. Sometimes the call did not come until late in the morning. One day I went into the classroom with only four minutes until class started, but I was grateful to be able to work all week.

~ Made a batch of stain remover using one part Dawn dishwashing detergent to two parts hydrogen peroxide along with some baking soda. This has gotten old stains out for me, so I keep it under the sink with a toothbrush for stubborn stains.

~ Viewed store ads online rather than buy a paper for 50¢.

~ Bought two 12 count packages of Angel Soft toilet paper for $3.99
combining  a sale with a coupon, which made them 33¢ per roll. These were double rolls.

~ Made lunches from home for work/school.

~ Bought a pizza for $1.00. Our local pizzeria, Cheezie's, had a Facebook deal from Monday the 28th thru Wednesday the 30th. Buy any pizza at regular price and get one of equal value for just a dollar. I bought two pizzas, which cost me $10.07 and we ate one for dinner, which left enough for breakfast and lunch the next day.

~ My daughter has allergies and she is allergic to most body washes, so today I went to buy her some Ivory body wash. Walmart sells the 12 ounce bottle for 97¢, but I was aable to clip four coupons from Coupon.com for 50¢ off per bottle. Normally that coupon is for 25¢ off. Each bottle ended up costing me 47¢, a sweet deal.

What did you do this week to be frugal?

  1. Wow! It sounds like you had a very productive week, Belinda! Good job!
One good thing this week -- I didn't buy any groceries!

Also, since we're now in the shoulder season for weather, here in the PNW, it's common for households to begin using the furnace in the last days of Sept. But instead, as it wasn't horribly cold, we drank a lot of hot tea, and ate hot soup for many meals, as well as put on sweaters and sweatshirts. I'd rather wear a sweater in the house in October, and have more $$ for heat in winter, than turn on the heat full time, now and have less heat money when it's really cold.

    Have a great week!

    1. Thank you, Lili. Good job on not buying any groceries this week. So many times we can make do with what we already have on hand. :)

I so agree with you on the heat. I did have to turn it on in my car yesterday to defrost the windows though. It was 58 here and rainy, so I needed that. I'm looking forward to covering up with a blanket though. I love this time of year.

I hope you have a great week too! :)

  2. Sounds like a very productive week! 48 degrees, rainy, raw here in CT. House temp is 64, but I refusev to turn the furnace on. Long pants, socks, LLB wicked good slippers, 3/4 sleeved top, fleece vest, hot drinks. It's fine.

    1. Thank you, Carol. Sounds chilly up your way. I'd be keeping the heat off as long as possible too. Sounds like you're doing a great job. :)

  3. Turned on the furnace a few nights this past week. Less than 10 degrees Celsius in the house which at 6 a.m. is just a bit too nippy. Love, love, love Autumn though so try not to complain too much about the cold :).

You had a very productive week. It is great that you got a full week of work.

    1. Thank you, Theresa.

I would have turned on the heat at that temperature too. I hope you have a great week. :)

  4. Good week for you. And 5 days to sub. :)

Any chance you can be specific with amount of soda for stain remover? I use mostly hydrogen peroxide, and Dawn is a wonder of wonders.

Not knowing about your DD's allergies, allow me to pass on recommendations from DH's dermatologist: Dove unscented for cleansing and hair washing. No shampoo. No fragrances on body. This may not apply at all to your DD but just in case.

Not dying my hair, I learned that Dawn Concentrate is perfect for my white/gray hair for washing and as a conditioner. It could remove dye, so I do not recommend Dawn for dyed hair.

    1. Thank you. :)

I used about 1/8 cup of the Dawn to 1/4 cup Hydrogen Peroxide and then just about 1 tablespoon of the baking soda. I keep it in a small bowl and use as needed.

Good to know about the Dove. I will have to try that for her. She is allergic to so many of the body washes and shampoos. She has sinus allergies, and fruit and vegetable allergies also.

Good to know about the Dawn as a shampoo too. I don't dye my hair, so it would work for me. Thanks for all the great info this morning. :)

  5. Thanks for baking soda amount.

Allergies are not easily solved. DH has had both vocal cords surgically stripped, for example, because of allergies. RX's did not help skin/scalp, but using Dove unscented (bar or soap gel) does. May not help your DD but is the dermatological answer. HOPE.
