Frugal Friday ~ June 19, 2020 ~ Recession Ahead?

According to multiple news sources, the coronavirus pandemic forced the United States economy to contract sharply, which has caused the US to enter a recession.

Many experts think this will be a deep recession and short, but time will tell as to how long it will really last.

We know of several small businesses that have decided to call it quits and close permanently. Both of the owners were close enough to retirement age to go ahead and retire. I find it sad though that the pandemic forced them into this decision.

My daughter continues to resell online as her primary source of income. I help her by steaming and processing items.

Processing clothes for her has made it so that I know exactly what I want in my own clothing. I know what length I prefer in tops and pants, along with what fabrics I prefer.

All of this makes it easier to know what to shop for, which will save me money. For example I have purchased tops before with a certain fabric blend that I didn't like when it arrived. Now I can avoid that extra expense.

This week I've been watching the soap opera, Port Charles on YouTube. There is one channel on there that has all the episodes in chronological order, so it's easy to watch them in order.

Our electric bill for June 2019 was 320.48 while our electric bill for June 2020 is $208.49, which is a difference of $111.99. The savings is due to our new energy efficient air conditioner. The savings will pay for the air conditioner in the first summer that we own it.

If you're a regular reader of my blog, you'll know I've babied our old air conditioner for a couple of years now. I knew it was probably costing us money and now we have proof of that. We saved up our money over the last year in order to pay cash for the new a/c.

If you're looking for money saving ways to stay cool this summer, feel free to read my blog post on the topic.

Speaking of staying cool, last Friday I cut up a watermelon for us to enjoy. Is there anything better than an ice cold sweet watermelon on a hot summer day?

Part of a wheel on my desk chair broke off this week making it hard to roll around. No need to fear as I had a replacement, bought at a yard sale last summer, so I only needed to replace it.

Amy Dacyczyn picked up items at yard sales that she knew would need to be replaced over the course of the year like lunch boxes and such. This timely tip still holds true today.

My bills this week were paid online, which saved me the cost of postage and envelopes.

My project of working on the recipes on my blog continued this week. Several of the recipes I had posted on the blog over the years didn't make it onto my recipe page. I've been working on correcting that again this week. I hope all the recipes are not bothering you.

My daughter made peanut butter chocolate chip cookies again this week. And on Thursday I made a recipe for Sesame Peanut Butter Noodles.

I made these for my daughter when she was younger and she loved them, so here is the recipe in case you're interested.

Sesame Peanut Butter Noodles

Ingredients
6 ounce packet ramen noodles without the flavor packet
2 tablespoons pure sesame oil
1 & 1/2 tablespoons peanut butter
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 & ½ tablespoons rice vinegar
1 garlic clove, minced
½ teaspoon grated fresh ginger root

Optional Garnish:
3 sliced green onions
1 1/2 tsp. sesame seeds

Directions:
Cook and drain the noodles according to the package directions.
In a medium bowl, add the sesame oil, peanut butter, honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, and ginger.
Whisk until well combined.
The peanut butter should completely break down to create a smooth sauce.
Pour the sauce over the hot noodles.
Toss to coat.
On Thursday I received my second unemployment check. I'm very grateful for this as it's really helped here and given me a peace of mind I've not had in the last few months.

How was your week?

My Frugal Week ~ January 11, 2020

It was back to the grindstone this week and I ended up working three days bringing lunch and drinks with me all three days.

This week I cashed in points from Checkpoints for $3 in Amazon credit. I'm going to save my credit and buy some Wonder Clips for sewing as I am running out of straight pins as they bend when I make cloth pads with them.

On Saturday I worked on making a casserole hot pad big enough for a 9 x 13 casserole dish. Looking back now I don't know why I didn't think of making these sooner. We've always doubled up on hot pads to fit a casserole dish, but no longer.

I made another one of Friday, so now I have a matching set. These would make great gifts for friends and family too. If your interested in making these, here is a tutorial on how to do that.

This week I listed more items on eBay and sold three items. One of the items was a tripod and I packaged it to mail, but when my daughter went to ship it she realized I didn't charge enough shipping. So, she repackaged it for me making it as small as could be and saved me $11 in shipping charges.

My daughter gave me a Pampered Chef Mix & Chop for Christmas. I've already made tacos with it once and today I made egg salad. I was surprised at how heavy duty it was. It's a handy little tool for the kitchen, which makes fast work of some jobs.

On Thursday I wrote a letter and filled out another application for free prescription medicine.

These items were printed out using the printer we bought at a yard sale this summer for $3.00. Afterwards it was unplugged as there is no sense in having it plugged in, using electricity, when we only use it sparingly.

My doctor will have to fill out a portion of it, but is the person who let me know about the free program, so I know she will be happy to do this for me.

My Dad has fixed our driveway using his tractor and it is so much better than it was before. It has no potholes or ditches running through it. We do have heavy rain in the forecast for the weekend, but I'm hoping it will spare our driveway.

Bailey's no spend January and our no eating out is going well. We have not eaten out any this month and have no plans to in order to save our money.

We've not spent any money at the grocery store this month either, but have been using the food in our pantry. I've been cooking all meals from home and we've been eating up the leftovers, so no food waste either.

We had ordered three books from a seller on Amazon for my Mom. They only sent two of the books and I asked the seller who said to give it more time. In the end the book didn't show and the seller gave me a refund this week.

All of our Christmas decorations have been taken now and placed back into storage. The house seems bare to me now, but we did move some things back into their regular place, which did help some.

On Friday we went to McKay's Used Books. Mom has been enjoying reading John Grisham books lately, so I looked for her and found several of his books for 5¢ each, which is such a bargain. She was tickled to get them too.

Saving on Electricity: Reverse Ceiling Fans for Winter

Ceiling fans are another tool we use here at the Frugal Workshop to help save money year round. Not only do they add beauty to our home, but they also serve as a supplement to both our heating and cooling systems.

Several times this season my daughter has wanted to turn on the air conditioning, but I turned the ceiling fans on instead. This provided enough of a cool breeze to avoid turning on the air conditioner, which ends up saving money on our electric bill.

Ceiling fans made these days are very efficient in moving air around and are built to be used all year long. The key to using your ceiling fan properly is to adjust the rotation of the fan blades according to the temperatures.

Because hot air rises, the air that we normally pay to heat at this time of year ends up accumulating towards the ceiling.

When ceiling fan blades are reversed and forced to move in a clockwise direction, the air is pushed up towards the ceiling and down the walls. This moves the hot air down to the floor, thus making the room feel warmer where people are gathered, rather than being allowed to accumulate towards the ceiling.

Do you need to know how to reverse the direction of your ceiling fan? Here are directions to help you with this task.

First off you need to turn the ceiling fan off and wait until the blades have stopped moving completely.

Then you can follow these easy directions:

Get a step stool or ladder to stand on.

Locate the directional (forward/reverse) toggle switch on the body of your fan.

Flip the toggle switch in the opposite direction.

Get off step stool or ladder.
Turn fan back on.

Stand directly under the fan and make sure the blades are rotating in the proper direction for the season.

Then sit back and enjoy the comfort and savings that a ceiling fan will provide year round.

Right now we still have our ceiling fans geared towards warm weather, but starting in January we will begin to experience the cold winter weather and will be changing the direction of our ceiling fans at that time.

What about your household? Do you have ceiling fans to help save money on your heating and cooling system? Are they rotating in the correct direction for the season?

My Frugal Week

Good Sunday afternoon. I hope you've had a great week.

We were able to get in on multiple freebies this week. I think that was the most freebies we ever received in one week.

Last Saturday we attended an energy workshop. Afterwards we were given a free energy saving kit.

One free orange juice from school.

Three pairs of socks and this cloth napkin from a free box.

We ordered a free drink from Sonic.

Taco Bell was giving away free tacos on Wednesday, so we made sure to stop by and get our taco. And ran a couple of errands on our to do list as well.
We also had a voucher for $3.90 off of Snickers bars at Walmart and used that and ended up with eight Snickers bars in all. We also used the free Snickers coupon that coupons.com gave out this week.

Bailey ran into Walmart for something and used the Freeosk to get us both a sample of Bounce Wrinkle Guard.

e had to run to Publix for an RX and I used my Starkist tuna voucher and picked up three cans of albacore tuna for free.

We also picked up an RX at CVS and got two free bottles of water.

We've been combining errands as usual when we go out, and cooking all of our meals at home.

I've been using up some lurking items in my pantry. One lone packet of hot chocolate, six packets of oatmeal, and one small box of raisins were used up this week.

Tuesday night movie night had us watching The House with a Clock in its Walls, and we split a frozen Jack's pizza, which sell for $2.50 at Walmart.

Several days this week it was cool enough to open the car windows and not have to run the air conditioner. This helps me to save money on gas.

The day before Halloween it rained and rained here and a cold front moved in, so it's definitely cold here right now.

The temperature in the house is down to 53 this morning, but I'm bundled up in a blanket, no heat on yet, but if this keeps up I may have to turn it on.

Thursday evening we had some errands to run and ended up at the Samaritan Center thrift store. I found a like new Tupperware salt shaker for 35¢, a steno pad for 35¢, a new box of Christmas cards for 35¢.

I've been busy sewing this weekend, repairing a towel that had a rip in it and sewing gifts for Christmas.

Before & After

How was your week? Anything exciting to tell us about?

Frugal Friday ~ July 12, 2019

This week I was able to buy a new pair of Chacos for $15.00. The retail price on these is anywhere from $70 and up with some costing over $100. The lady running the yard sale had worn them one time and didn't like them, so I was able to buy them for a great price.

Chacos are very popular around here due to white water rafting and these being shoes that are great to wear in the river. They will replace a pair of flip flops that I've had for about ten years and are simply worn out.

On Saturday we ran multiple errands.

First stop was at Lowe's where we picked up a roll of plastic sheeting to cover a window along with some tacks, and foam insulation to fill in an area where air is leaking in and out of the house.

This work has already reduced the temperature in the house by about 6 to 8 degrees, so a win-win situation.

Next stop was the Flowers Bakery Outlet where we picked up two loaves of bread @ 79¢ each.

Then onto CVS where we picked up an RX along with two free bottles of water.

Next was the Dollar Tree where my daughter picked up several items. She also picked up some of the LA's Awesome Stuff because she had read so many great reviews on it.

Next stop was Food City. All I needed to complete my menus this week was a pie crust, so we stopped in here for that. We also found three bags of sugar in the marked down section.

Dollar General - They sell Campbell's cream of Potato soup in the 13 ounce can for $1.50. The grocery store sells the 10 ounce can for an even higher price, so if I'm using this I like to buy it at the Dollar General.

Sonic & MCD's - picked up two free drinks and received two more receipts to get two more free drinks.

On Thursday my daughter stopped in at Kroger and found the mother lode of meat markdowns.

This week I used the last package of chicken and the last package of ground beef I had in our freezer, so this meat mark down find came at the right time and I consider it a blessing. We are definitely stocked up on meat for a long time to come.

She also found marked down yogurt, milk, almond milk, sugar, and hamburger buns. She hit the store at the right time and was able to cash in on all these deals.

How was your week? We'd love to read all about it in the comment section.

Saving Money while Staying Cool During a Heat Wave

The news and weather forecasters have been calling for some very hot weather across the country in the next few days.

That means many people are going to be cranking up the air conditioning in an effort to try and stay cool, and that usually makes for higher electric bills in the summer.

It is possible to keep cool while still trying to save on electric costs during the hot summer time. Listed below you will find my fifteen tips for keeping cool when the temperatures rise.

Take advantage of cooler weather: If the area where you live cools off in the evening, take advantage of this to cool off your entire house. Open windows and doors with screens to bring the inside temperature down and facilitate cross breezes. Put fans in the windows to pull cool air in and hot air out of the house.

In the morning, close up your house and draw blinds and drapes closed, so the house stays dark and cool. If you have blinds, close them or angle them upwards. That way, light is reflected up and into the room and direct rays of the sun are not let in.

Remember that shade is a wonderful tool to use to keep heat to a minimum. Keep the sun from hitting your windows and doors. Curtains will help on the inside, but you can also use the Mylar covered auto sun shades to cover an outside window that is in direct sunlight during the heat of the day. Outdoor awnings or louvers can reduce the heat entering the house by as much as 80%.

Inexpensive bamboo shades that roll-up and down are another way to keep your doors shady. We have four bamboo shades on our back porch and we pull them down during the hottest parts of the day to keep the back of the house cooler. Trees can also be planted to provide shade to help keep your home cooler.

Keep the air moving around inside. Fans are another tool you can use to keep your house cooler in the summer. Ceiling fans help to create breezes in the house during the day and night and can make an entire room feel cooler.

High velocity vans are an easy way to move large amounts of air around a room efficiently. This helps the air conditioner work more efficiently, so you can actually set the thermostat temperature higher than would be the case without the fans.

Also, make sure you clean your air conditioning filters and fans regularly, so they will work more efficiently.

Close off rooms you are not using. If you’re not using a room, close the vents and the doors. Same goes for closets, storage rooms, and bathrooms. Also, close the door to the basement, and down any stairwells. Remember that heat rises while cold air falls, so if you have a basement and you have the door open, cold air from upstairs will actually fall down the stairs where you don’t need it.

Spend your time in the coolest area of the house. That may be a basement or a smaller room where the windows can catch a breeze or a window air conditioner has less space to cool, which makes that room cooler than larger rooms in the house. Basements are usually 10-15 degrees cooler than the upstairs part of the house. My sister’s house has a basement in it and when we visit there during the summer we spend a lot of time there because it is much cooler than the upstairs portion of her house.

Stay hydrated. Your body needs water to keep cool, so make sure you drink plenty of fluids even if you don't feel thirsty. Your body is designed to cool itself and if you stay hydrated, your body will do its job more efficiently than if you become dehydrated.

Dress for the season. Go barefoot or wear sandals and keep the socks and tennis shoes for cooler weather. Wear lighter weight fabrics and shorts with a sleeveless shirt.

Consider wearing your swimsuit. One summer when I first lived on my own in a small house with no air conditioning, the weather was miserably hot. I stayed in my swimsuit when I was not working and would often take a cold shower and then go outside to dry off in the shade, which made the heat more bearable.

Use the water hose or use a spray bottle of water to give yourself a spritz of cool water every once in a while.

Minimize heat buildup inside the house. Do all that you can do in order to not add to the heat of the house during the day when temperatures are at their highest.  Ovens, computers, lamps, washers, dryers, and dishwashers can all act like mini-space heaters and can put out large amounts of heat in your rooms.

Run appliances either late at night or early in the morning and not during the heat of the day.  Use electrical power strips to plug your electronic devices into, so you can turn off the switch when not in use because many electronics give off heat.

Turn off the lights. A traditional 60 watt incandescent bulb can heat a small room as much as five degrees in one hour while a 100 watts bulb can heat the room as much as 11 degrees in an hour. While CFL's are much better than traditional bulbs at heating up, they do still put off some heat, so turn them off when you don't need them.

One of the biggest contributors to indoor heat and humidity is cooking. Feel free to cook outside during the summer. I can remember many days cooking dinner outside with my Grandmother during the summer. She had a whole kitchen set up outside.  Use your gas or charcoal grill to cook outside and keep the heat out of your home.

If you do have to cook inside, use small appliances like electric skillets and crock pots to your advantage; they maintain low temperatures well and release almost no heat into the kitchen.  Use a toaster oven rather than heat up the house with your big oven.

Remember, air conditioners have to work harder to deal with the excess heat and humidity created by cooking indoors. If you’ve ever turned your oven on during a hot summer day then you know what I’m talking about.

Plan ahead and eat cooler meals to save energy.  Pay attention to the weather forecast and take advantage of the cooler days to prepare a few extra meals and stash them in the freezer. You can then cook that food in your microwave when faced with a hot spell rather than heating up the house with the oven. Eat foods such as salads, fruits, sandwiches, crackers and cheeses instead of heating up the house rather than cook a more traditional meal.

Install a programmable thermostat. These devices regulate the temperature in your house automatically according to the schedule that you set. Thus, when you’re not home, it allows the heating or cooling to turn off for several hours, saving you on your energy bill. A programmable thermostat can easily cut your energy bill by 10 to 20%.

Check your home for air leaks. Most homes have some air leaks that make the job of keeping it cool in summer much harder. In the summertime, heat can leak into homes through cracks and openings around the house, and around window air conditioning units. Adding caulk, foam and weather stripping around doors, windows, and air conditioners can help to prevent these leaks.

Use cold water to help stay cool. Run your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds, which will help your body to stay cool. Place a wet washcloth in a Ziploc baggie and stick it in the freezer. Pull it out when you feel hot and wipe your face and arms and hands off, which will make your feel cooler immediately. When I was growing up, we always took a few baggies of wet washcloths with us when we were going anywhere.

Consider running a dehumidifier. Getting the humidity level in your house lower is like a magic bullet, which will allow you to raise the temperature on your air conditioning unit and thus save money.

There you have it, tips to stay cool while still trying to save money in the process. Hopefully, when you open your electric bill this summer you will have a pleasant surprise.

Remember, do what you can, with what you have, where you are, and stay cool this summer.

What tips do you have for saving money during the hot days of summer?

Frugal Friday ~ June 7, 2019

Wednesday we stayed home and I mended a pile of clothing, which had at least a dozen items in the pile. Several items needed the hem put back into place where the stitching failed. Some things needed a fastener put back into place.

Fixing things like this can make the difference between keeping an item useful or not, being able to sell it or not, or having to donate it and leave the problem to someone else. I choose to repair this one, which will make the item useful for much longer.

Two cloth pads were repaired also with one needing sewing all around and another one just needing a new snap put into place.

Jean shorts...

One of the items needed the pockets redone.  The bottom of the pockets went past the hem on a pair of shorts my daughter liked. I shortened the pocket and then trimmed them, so you can't see them past the hem. She likes them much better this way.

Youngsters nowadays love their jeans to look like this. Back in my day we prefered jeans that looked new and not distressed, but I'm older now and not a fashion expert. LOL

One freebie I received in the mail this week was a reusable shopping bag from Earthbound. We really like and use the reusable shopping bags and this one is a bright and colorful welcome addition to our collection.

Taco Bell fans take note. The Golden State Warriors won a road game in the NBA finals, so Taco Bell will be giving away a free Doritos Locos Taco on June 18, 2019 from 2 to 6 p.m. Here is a link to the freebie on the Freebie Shark website if you're interested.

The weather here this week has been rainy and cooler as a result. As of this writing I have both the air conditioner turned off and the fans as it is really cool at 63 degrees in the house right now. I love it as I would much rather feel cool than hot.

We continue to use up items in our pantry to make food here at home to save money. I didn't go to the grocery store at all this week. In fact I did not look at the grocery store sale ads this week, which is unheard of for me.

So far we've had plenty of variety in our diets. Breakfast was a delicious bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar, walnuts, blueberries, and cherries.

This week I took my car in for a front end alignment. It had been two years since my last alignment. I had a tire with a slow leak in March of this year and the mechanic who repaired it suggested my car needed the alignment, so since school is out I decided this was the best time to take care of that. Total cost was $79.95.

Keeping the front end of your car aligned will save undue wear and tear on your tires and therefore save you money. It wouldn't make sense to buy new tires and not keep the front end aligned. The tires would wear out sooner and need replacing sooner, which would cost you more money.  Taking care of the things you own will save you money.

While I was out of the house I remembered that Panera Bread sent me a free pastry this week. I picked it up after the alignment and picked out a chocolate croissant. I don't know if you've ever had one of theirs, but they are delicious. I split mine with my daughter.

Cleaning and organizing has continued this week. Over the years we have been given multiple boxes of fabric dryer sheets. We don't always use them as we don't always use the dryer to dry clothes and fabric softener makes some things like towels and cloth pads non absorbent.

This week I cleaned this area of our home and threw out some of the old fabric dryer sheets as honestly they smelled off and I wouldn't want anything I was wearing to smell like that. I also threw out a couple of empty bottles that were left there to rinse out with water and use. The whole area looks much neater and better organized.

How has your week been? Anything frugal you would like to tell us about in the comment section? We would love to read all about it.
