Frugal Friday

We made it to Friday...yeah! :)

This week I was able to work four days. As usual I packed lunch and drinks all four days.

Over the weekend my daughter and I stopped at the Flowers Baking Thrift Store in Chattanooga.

These are the items we picked up:

Pumpkin Bagels $2.49
(50¢ each and made for a quick &  inexpensive breakfast)

Dave's Killer Bread - $2.00 each
(Made great grilled cheese)

Nature's Own Bread - 79¢ each

Sunmaid Raisin Bread - $1.39 each

This little bread outlet saves us so much money on bread products. It's always crowded when we go there too and for good reason.

Tuesday night is movie night around here and Bailey received a free Redbox rental for her birthday.

The movie we wanted to see wasn't available, so we rented A Dog's Purpose instead. This film tells the story of a devoted dog who discovers the meaning of his own life through the lives of the humans he loves. It was definitely worth watching.

Since summer has come to an end, Saturday Night has become our board game and soup night.

This past Saturday I made Potato Soup earlier in the day and we played several different board games that evening.

The games we played that night include the game of Sorry, Words with Friends, and Ticket to Ride New York.

The original Ticket to Ride game is also one that we play regularly as well. In this game players connect North American cities by way of train routes. The game challenges you to get the best train routes before your opponent.

Let me tell you that Bailey is a whiz when it comes to playing board games like this. She was an expert at the game of checkers at a very young age and has only gotten better and more skilled with age. She takes notes when we are playing and just about beats me every time with her strategic planning.

Board games can be a lot of fun and these days there are YouTube videos out there to show you how to play certain games. It's how we learn to play some of the more modern games.

As you may remember, we celebrated Bailey's 22nd birthday last week.

Here is a photo of the Cherry Dr. Pepper cake I made for her:

I've not made a cake using a can of soda pop before I made this cake. I would have to do the math to see if the can of soda (28¢) would be cheaper than using eggs, oil, and water to make a cake. The soda pop made the cake very moist and it stayed moist for the entire week.

We went out to eat on her birthday at her favorite Mexican restaurant. I think the food tasted even better since we hadn't eaten out in months.

This week I found a nickle in the parking lot while I was pumping gas. Bailey found a quarter in the floor at Goodwill also.

This week I entered and won a contest for the Joy of Cooking cookbook. It will be a few weeks before it arrives, but I'll be sure to take a picture of it when it does.

One of our friends gave us two bags of apples and one bag of oranges this week, which was very nice.

Tonight for dinner I'll be making spaghetti and using up several cans from my pantry and I'll be making Taco Soup for our board games on Saturday night.

I hope you've had a great frugal week and that your weekend is relaxing and blessed.

  1. Sounds like a pretty good me. How neat to be able to go to a bakery thrift store. We have nothing like that.
I love that you guys have game night. It keeps you close. That is a pretty neat tradition.
I have made a cola cake and they are moist and gooey for sure. When I buy pop - it is store brand, so a pretty cheap fix here.
Hope you have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you, Cheryl. We do love both our movie and game nights here. Bailey looks forward to them so much. Your store pop would definitely be inexpensive. I had no idea how moist they would stay. We are going to do this again when I bake a cake. I hope you have a great weekend too.

    2. I've tried a recipe for a lemon bundt cake made with 7up that's really delicious! I'm not sure where saw the recipe now, probably a Taste of Home magazine.

    3. Oh, that sounds good, Nichole. I love lemon anything.

    1. Thank you, Sluggy. I didn't know that about the Dr. Pepper baked beans. I wonder if they're any good? LOL

  3. I just love your post. Having those movie and game nights sound like an optimal way to have fun on a budget, bond with your daughter and easy to open up to add others into the spirit of the event. We do plenty of movie nights, but the game nights should be added. Our youngest does a game night club at school and she really enjoys it.

    1. Thank you, Sam. How neat that your daughter has a game night club at school. That would be such a great event. Ours usually had a reading night, but a game night would be fun.

  4. Hi Belinda,
Wow! So much happened in your week! What a great week that you had. And that birthday cake for Bailey looks wonderful. Happy birthday once again to your daughter.
I love board games. I'll have to pull a couple out to play with my family this winter. Thanks for the inspiration.
The Joy of Cooking has been one of my favorite cookbooks over the years. There are recipes to prepare and cook just about everything. I hope you find a lot of use in yours.
    Have a great weekend, Belinda!

    1. Thank you, Lili. Board games are a good way to pass the time on those long and cold winter nights. I can't wait to see the Joy of Cooking book as I've never read it before. The blog owner said there was a lot of frugal tips in the new edition, so it sounds like something right up my alley. :)

I hope you have a great weekend too!

  5. At home the bread thrift store was close. However, here it is farther away. I hate that. The cake looks so pretty.

  6. It sounds like a another very frugal week, Belinda. I wish we had a bakery thrift store. But on the other hand, it would be too tempting and I’d be eating all sorts of baked goods every day. 😁

I’ve never used soda in cakes, but I knew one of my professors who used Sprite to marinate beef.

I hope you and Bailey have a wonderful weekend.

    1. Ha Ha, I know what you mean about eating all sorts of baked goods. Mine is bread and I've eaten my fair share of grilled cheese this week on that good Dave's killer bread this week. LOL

I've not heard of Sprite to marinate beef before, sounds interesting. I know lemon juice is good to marinate beef as it breaks down some of the membranes and makes it more tender.

I hope you have a great weekend too!

  7. The Flowers day old bred stores are wonderful. There i one on the way to the lake place and I love going in and getting stuff. I don;' eat bread at all and TheHub rarely does so I don't buy there like I used to. But when we have overnight guests it is a must.
We love Ticket to Ride and play it often. Son2 and DIL2 are gamers and include me.

    1. Oh, how neat Anne that you all play Ticket to Ride too. It's such a fun game.

I have my moments when it comes to bread. Some days I eat it and other days I don't. I do love the heartier breads though.

  8. I haven't commented in a long time. I can't believe Bailey is 22. Happy Birthday sweet girl! I swear she was a baby when we were all on AOL's Frugal board. She's not allowed to grow up. :) She grew to be a beautiful, sweet & smart young woman.

I smiled so big reading about her board game strategies. That is a gamer girl!!! I do the same thing. I have a notebook dedicated to gaming tactics. I do agree with you that board games make you a better video gamer. I know I would not be the video gamer I am today if it was not for board games.

    1. Thank you so much, Safyne. Yes, she was just a baby when we were all on the AOL boards. They sure do grow up fast. Oh wow, I will have to tell her you both have similar strategies, how neat!

  9. I could say we had a frugal week, but that would be wrong. I splurged & ordered Sam's favorite meal on Thursday, and have been spoiling the kids a bit. To be expected, I'm guessing. We'll be back to our normal routine soon. I did make money on a necklace sale ($125) & sold a few things on ThredUp. So, good to have that to offset.

    1. Definitely good to have that to offset, but it's always fun to splurge every now and then. That's what we did during the birthday week this month.
