Sunday Dinner

Dinner tonight is simple...Cheeseburgers with all the trimmings, tator tots, and a creamy dill cucumber salad. I grilled the hamburgers on the George Foreman grill. The Cucumber salad was a recipe from the Wall Street Journal.

You can find it here:

I found the recipe through a link that a friend of mine posted. The website lists newspaper food sections and columns by days of the week. The Food section is one of my favorite sections of the newspaper. Here is a link if you are interested:

Sunday Dinner

Dinner tonight is a three pound Rump Roast, picked up last night for $11 as a mark down, along with roasted potatoes and carrots. I decided to pull out the GE Roaster rather than heat up the kitchen with the oven. I usually only pull this out for holiday dinners, but decided to use it today and was glad I did. I served this with fresh, sliced tomatoes from the garden. This dinner cost approximately $14 to make and served four people with leftovers. That works out to $3.50 per serving, which is a very good deal in my book.

IGA Sale

Made a quick stop at IGA today while running other errands to pick up two items. First on the list was eight ounce blocks of IGA Cheddar Cheese, which were on sale price at 3 for $5.00, which makes them $1.66 each.  A good price since the recession started back in 2008 when $1.50 was the average price of this size block of cheese.

Also on sale was Butterball turkey bacon priced at $1.00 each. I had a coupon from All You magazine for $1.00 off two packages, so I picked up two packs, and ended up paying 50¢ each for those.

Any good deals in your area this week?

Canning

I've been busy canning this week. Pictured above are my first two batches of tomatoes right out of the canner, which totals fourteen jars of tomatoes so far, and also the three jars of pineapple zucchini in my last post. I still have plenty more in various stages of ripening to can:

Every summer I am reminded of how much I love canning when I see the finished product. It can be a lot of work, but the end result is worth it to me. From the sounds of recent news articles it looks like prices for groceries are going to be even higher in the future. Therefore, I think it is very important to keep some of our household savings in the form of food. Every little bit I can do towards this will help me get me one step closer to that goal.

What are you canning in your Frugal Kitchen this summer?

Wednesday's Dinner

I've read about cooking meatloaf in the Crockpot on Carol's blog for a long time now, but it never clicked with me until today when I was thinking about making meatloaf and not wanting to heat up the house. This is what they had for dinner yesterday and so I decided to make mine in the Crockpot too. My review? This is my new favorite way to cook meatloaf! The house didn't heat up from using the oven, less electricity used with the Crockpot, the meatloaf still had that crusty bottom that we love. It was a win win situation and I will definitely be cooking it this way in the future. Sides were mashed potatoes, corn, and sliced tomatoes from the garden.
