Frugal Friday #2 of December 2021
Welcome to Friday!
My Frugal Week
The mailman couldn’t deliver a package to our mailbox the other day, so I went to investigate and we ended up going to town to drop off packages and made a Walmart run. Bailey was able to get us some free plant based burgers via Ibotta.
Last week Burger King celebrated their 65th year in business and celebrated by allowing everyone to order one Whopper for 37 cents. Which was the original price of the Whopper when they first opened.
We put up our Christmas tree on Sunday and I wrapped the presents I’m giving and placed them under the tree. I’m still waiting on one present in the mail, but other than that I am done shopping for Christmas.
We hung laundry on the clothing rack to dry rather than run the dryer.
Question of the Week
Why are people surprised at the cost of produce when it is out of season? One way people save money is to eat with the seasons.
Here In Tennessee the season for strawberries is in May. If you want to save money, buy what you can afford when they are in season and preserve them however you like and then enjoy them all year long. That way you won’t have to pay $7 per pound for them In December when they are out of season.
On the Blog...
I updated my Cornbread Dressing recipe page to include directions on how to make the cornbread. Bailey has been making a list of recipes we want to make for Christmas and thought it was confusing the way I had it, so hopefully it makes better sense now.
Saving Money In My Frugal Kitchen
We did all the usual things, used up leftovers for other meals, cooked from scratch, kept up with the dishes and cleaning kitchen so I want to go in there and cook.

You know I don't get that either. As I am in charge of compassionate service for our church, I have to schedule meals in for people who are sick, have surgery or a death in the family. It is really eye opening. Many people just don't cook. Some live in what I would call poverty by choice. I had one case where, I had meals brought in for 2 weeks for woman who was having both breasts removed, which is awful surgery. Because of covid we had to take in gift cards or meals delivered from a restaurant. This was a lot to ask of parishioners. But people stepped up to the plate. Then I told the woman after the two weeks to let me know if she needed anything else. She txted and told me her kids wanted some fruit and they wanted grapes, and strawberries.
ReplyDeleteIt was January. I took her some apples and oranges. Can you imagine?
Wow, it’s one thing to pay for them yourself out of season, but asking someone else to buy them for you is asking a lot. And now the news is reporting food banks are struggling to keep up with the demand. Their costs are higher just like others costs have gotten higher lately. Apples and oranges were a great choice and in season. :)
DeleteYeah Strawberry's were nearly $10 for a two pound tray at Sam's the other day, but 5 pounds of clementines were $8, which I thought was high. We've got berries frozen now and ai don't mind buying frozen either for variety.
ReplyDeleteI don’t mind buying frozen for variety either, Sam. In fact I like to keep frozen blueberries regularly. I think $8 for 5 pounds of clementines is high also.
DeleteI'm always amazed at how much people are willing to pay for produce at Sams. There is no way I would just waste my money like that. I buy select produce items there that I know is way less than anywhere else. I've always only purchased in season produce, but I've noticed that my produce market has become a little pricey over the last few months. It makes me thankful that I've frozen some of those clearance fruit I found there over summer.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely grateful for what you’ve preserved over the summer. I am shocked at some of the prices at Sams too, although it’s been a while since we’ve been inside there.
DeleteI always buy fruit in season....Winter is apples, oranges, bananas (cause the price never seems to change) and pears. Once in awhile I will purchase kiwi when there is a really good sale.
ReplyDeleteYou had a great frugal week Belinda.
God bless.
You’re right, bananas seem to be the same price all year long. My Mom buys as many on Walmart pick up that they will let her have, which I think is 50. 😂
DeleteI’m sorry I missed the 37 cents whopper! I love the whopper with that onion on top!!
ReplyDeleteIt was a good deal even though the line was long, it was worth it. :)
