Frugal Friday

Welcome to Friday! It's been a rainy week here with rain from Hurricane Zeta.

Here is a free calendar for November 2020 if you need one.

In My Frugal Kitchen

Did you know that Aldi is now doing curb side pickup for groceries? We were thrilled when we heard the news as their canned goods, produce, dairy, etc., are a good price here. This week we picked up apples, oranges, milk, fresh vegetables for salads, and one case of pears.

This will definitely save us money over shopping online at Amazon and Walmart pickup due to Aldi's lower prices. We've been spending more in the grocery category since the pandemic began because we've stayed out of the stores. So now we will be able to save money by doing this curb side pickup at Aldi.

We also did curbside pickups at Walmart, Ace Hardware, Lowes, Publix, and Panera Bread.

Bailey has a Panera Bread card that she received for her birthday last year, so we did a mobile order and had it put in our trunk with our other items. We ordered a six pack of bagels  and still have money left on the gift card.

I've always wanted one of these dish drying mats, but wouldn't spend the money for one. We found one in the yard sale stuff Bailey was able to pick up for free. I washed it and now have one in my kitchen for when my dish drainer is full and I need one. I usually use a dish towel for this, but the dish mat works better.

I made a refreshing dish this week with 1 can of applesauce, an eight ounce can of crushed pineapple, and a sprinkling of dry pineapple Jell-O powder. It was good and refreshing and I'll be making it again.

Camllia Beans has a really good article about beans here.  This article mentions soup beans, which my family calls them,  and their Appalachian history.
Its deep simplicity and accessibility means you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone from the foothills of Eastern Kentucky to the hamlets of West Virginia who doesn’t have a spin on the dish passed down through their family, and after your first bite, you’ll be more than happy to snack on a big pot of leftover soup beans for days.
We will be starting the month of November stocked up on groceries for the month. Bailey is planning on having a no spend November.  I will be planning on paying the bills only and buying one Christmas present.

We’ve been slowly cleaning out spaces and reorganizing during quarantine. While cleaning out the China cabinet recently Bailey pulled out a Pottery Barn pasta set we found at a yard sale a few years ago.

She asked me if I wanted to sell it since it’s been in the cabinet all this time. She explained that it was Pottery Barn and might go for around $100. I told her if she could get that much for it to go ahead and sell it. It only took a couple weeks and sold for full price on Mercari this week.

Two free deodorant samples came in the mail this week.

Tomorrow is Halloween and since we live so far off the beaten path, we have never had any trick or treaters here, so there is no need for us to buy candy for that reason. There are multiple Trunk or Treats going on here tomorrow if parents and children want to participate in those.

If I had a child who was of the trick or treating age I would just plan on getting some candy myself and having a super fun day of things they wanted to do at home rather than risk being exposed to Coronavirus.

Bailey read a tip on TikTok where a lady made ghosts out of tissue paper, wrapped a few candies for the head and tied them at the neck, drew on a face and hid them around her yard, hanging some from trees, and had her children hunt them like they would do Easter eggs.

In my experience, I've found that weighing the odds when it comes to risking exposure to Covid  is a personal matter. I am willing to take the risk and mask up to go to the doctor if I need to, but I wouldn't be willing to do that for candy on Halloween if that makes sense. Your mileage may vary and that is perfectly OK. :)

How was your week?

  2. I have wanted one of those dish mats, too. I ws thinking as I read that I would hide the candy like Easter eggs, but maybe in the house if it were rainy or very cold. I think there are things people can do to make the day fun. And, little ones don't even know what is happening if no one makes a big deal of going out of their way to suggest going trick or treating. Good deal on selling that pasta set. What is a pasta set?

    1. A pasta set is one huge bowl for serving the pasta and 4 little bowls for individuals to each have their own bowl. I agree with you that little ones won't miss trick or treating if no one mentions it to them.

  3. I'm glad you mentioned curbside pickup at Aldi's, we have one right around the corner from my house. I'll definitely take advantage of that. I did a post last night about the holidays and listed some ways we have scaled back on gifts over the last several years. I agree with you on the risk of covid exposure. I even canceled all routine appointments, we are on strictly emergency only for now.

    1. Check the Aldi website to make sure your Aldi is doing curbside pickup. We checked and there were a lot of them doing it.

  4. I hope to see kids out and about and I'll have treats at the end of the drive for those that do. IT's supposed to be nice so I am sure we'll see some out, though it is being discouraged. One of my birth friends spouse died-I' debating how to safely go to the visitation. I won't go to the service in side, but worry enough about the line. Still, I would hate for her to not know I cared enough to come.

    1. Oh, I'm so sorry about your friend's spouse, Sam. I'm sure you will find the right way to let her know you care about her.

I hope you do get some trick or treaters. That is a good way to handle it.

  5. Sounds like a pretty good week for you. Good going on that sale! I did not know Aldi started doing pick-up.

We used to have a tons of kids come on Halloween and I always enjoyed it. Last year being my first year alone - I stopped. The number s have dwindled over the year and hardly any neighbors do it. So I will be in my bedroom with the lights out!
    Have a good weekend.

    1. Thank you, Cheryl. I know here that trick or treaters go to certain neighborhoods to trick or treat. That could be in your area too, who knows these days. Enjoy your weekend.

  7. We still have a lot of kids in the neighborhood and I expect trick or treat goblins to be out. I am just not sure if I will be home We have power but no phone tv or internet and Bama is playing Mississippi State. Son 2 is fully functional so we will head over to his house if our connection is not back. I will just leave the treats in a box by the stairs

  8. no trick or treating her tonight. I already handed out candy to the neighbor kids I know. Feels good to not have to worry about it. I seen a sign at Aldi's about pickup. I'll have to try that! Have a good weekend.

    1. That was so nice of you to already hand out candy to your neighborhood children, Vickie. I know they enjoyed that! We really liked the Aldi pick up, it was fast and no contact. Hope you have a good weekend too.

  10. Our neighbors went the route of bagging candies & leaving them separated out on tables at the end of their driveways, which was nice for the kids. My sister built a candy chute that was 8+ feet long. You could lift it from the door, and candy slides out to the trick or treater. I loved the (socially distanced) creativity.

    1. Oh wow, those are such great ideas! I don't know if you watch the Conner's or not, but they had Halloween for the kids inside the house and behind every door inside the house was a trick or a treat. It was very creative.
