Freezing temperatures at night, high 40's to low 50's during the day. I so wish we had gotten a snow day prior to Christmas. Now, however, I am ready for spring. We think our chimney has a block in it, as the house was getting very smoky from the woodstove, so we let the fire go out, and are using our heat compressor. All I see when we use that is dollar signs flying out of the window. With building the new place, we want to wait a bit and become more liquid before we get the chimney swept, because we were running low on wood anyway. We ordered our wood thinking we'd move in February, but it looks like April at this point, so heat compressor it is. Since I like a very cool house at night, I would turn the heat down to 55 degrees at 5 p.m., (or off if I wasn't worried about pipes freezing at night) and leave it there until 5 a.m., when I set it back to 64 degrees, and let it warm the house for an hour or so before the kids have to get up. DH is slowly getting on board with that. He likes 68 during the day, and 64 at night, which to me is ridiculously high. Recently, he agreed that we should set the temperature it lower at night, after I pointed out that at 64 degrees, we are all flinging our windows open at night because we are so warm. Currently it is set to 60 degrees at night. My aim is to get it to 55 degrees at night by Sunday, without him noticing.
ReplyDeleteOMG Meg, I know what you mean about your heat compressor and dollar signs flying out the window. That's how I feel about ours too, but I'm sure we will have to turn it on with this frigid cold they say is coming. I'm glad your dh is onboard with the lower temp and hope you're able to get the temperature down to 55 without him noticing. My daughter is good about not having the heat on unless it is freezing even and then she will put on warmer clothes first.
DeleteIt's cold here, but no as cold as in your area. :) Just 63F right now. Stay warm Belinda.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, 63F sounds nice, Nil.
DeleteCold and windy and going colder! I think tomorrows high is supposed to be 1*. UGH. 2 days of absolute frigid and below zero then upper 50's on Sunday!!! CRAZY
ReplyDeleteEnjoy that soup.
Thanks Cheryl, I hope you all stay warm and toasty in this frigid cold.
DeleteSnowing right now but it won't last long (Mid-Essex, UK)
ReplyDeletexx
It doesn't last long here either, unfortunately.
DeleteChicago suburbs here, so, um... :D Basically everything is closed down here, as it should be. We're not even opening a single door tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteMy Dad is in Oak Lawn, Stephanie. So I know what you're talking about. He said even the cable tv is out as the lines must have frozen or something. No mail delivery either. Hope you stay safe and warm.
DeleteSnow changing to rain along the coast. I don't consider us the coast, we are inland but close enough to benefit with less snow. Supposed to get very cold here again this week. We had the same frigid weather about a week ago. Will be needing another oil delivery soon since the heat will be going 24 hours a day for a few days. Enjoy the soup, sounds good.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mary Lou. I hope you stay safe and warm and your cold weather does not last long.
DeleteRain and 50° here in SC. My grandma said it is in the -20s with wind chill in Iowa. We moved to get away from the cold, but some days i just want it to be cold out, so I can be cozy inside with some soup or hot cocoa.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, Nichole. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and I don't miss THAT kind of cold. Winters here in TN are much milder.
DeleteAlso, wondering how you like your instant pot? What size do you have? I usually get myself a Christmas present after the holidays, when there are sales, and I'm thinking about one.
ReplyDeleteI love mine, I have 2 of the 6 quart ones. I would love the 3 quart one for smaller things too. I had both of mine going the other day to batch cook with. I never make beans on the stovetop anymore. I just use the Instapot. I love not having to babysit them while they are cooking.
DeleteWe got 6 inches of snow yesterday and tomorrow the high is going to be -3 with windchills up to -40. :(
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds so cold, Kelly. I hope you stay safe and warm there.
DeleteI feel lucky today - it was about 60 here. :-) I watched most of the kids soccer game without a coat!
ReplyDeleteWow, that sounds great. My kind of temperature for sure.
DeleteIt is 11 degrees right now. Got three inches of snow. I am loving it. Except my dog LOVES the cold so she kept begging to be let out. I would let her out for a few minutes while I did some chores and let her back in. My hand froze to the door. That's what I get for opening the door with damp hands, lol. I was fine.
ReplyDeleteOur schools just announced cancellation. Right at the last minute.
Aww...how sweet that your dog wanted to be out in the snow. We have no school today, but are on a two hour delay for Thursday.
DeleteWell it is winter and we should expect this, but we all like to sit around and whine when the weather is not perfect. I wonder if our ancestors did that?
ReplyDeleteI don't know, but they sure did have a hard row to hoe. I'm so grateful for all the conveniences we have that they didn't. :)
