Frugal Friday ~ Third Frugal Friday of November 2024

Welcome to Frugal Friday!

My Frugal Week

Bailey and I went to a yard sale in East Ridge last Saturday. It is a monthly event held for the animal clinic there. I picked up three shirts for myself with long sleeves. I also picked up an elevated food bowl for the cats as I’m tired of cleaning up after they’ve tipped their food bowl over.

Our washer stopped working on Sunday evening, so I had a repairman come out on Monday afternoon. Turns out the lid release switch went bad, so he replaced it for $175, which included the $69 service fee. He said we had a good machine and not to get rid of it as the ones made today aren’t made to last.

I received $106 from Blogger this week for my blog for the past few months. I’m going to use part of it to get an oil change for my car. I will use a coupon from the oil change place website to save 50% off an oil change as their Black Friday special. I’ll wait until I have other errands to run and not make a special trip.

It’s turned into chilly weather here, so I’m enjoying a cup of hot peppermint tea here this morning to take the edge off the chill. I’m also wearing socks, shoes, long pants, and a long sleeve shirt and do not have any heat on yet. I’m measuring clothes for Bailey today, so a sit down job means I’ll be colder than usual.

I had four pocketknives that were given to my Dad years ago and I finally listed them as a lot on eBay for $19.95 this week. Imagine my surprise when the bidding reached $94.00. My Buy It Now price was only set at $60.00, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Freebies

On Wednesday I had an appointment and ended up getting some free samples, which included travel size shampoo, soap, razor, toothpaste, toothbrush, shaving cream, and body wash.

Savings of the Week

Bailey found this stick vacuum at the thrift store the other day. It didn’t work, but she figured it just needed a good cleaning and she was right. She brought it home and took the filter apart, gave it a good scrubbing and it works wonderfully.

We have done more vacuuming this week than ever because it’s so lightweight and easy to use. The best part? This particular vacuum sells for $160 on Amazon, but she only paid $20 for it.

Deal of the Week

Since I was running errands on Wednesday I stopped in at Walmart and snagged two more of their cold rotisserie chickens for $3.97 each. I’m loving the price on these and how much chicken I can get from them and for a good price. Bailey found two last week marked down to $2.00, which was also an even better deal, but I’m finding them more in the meat department cold for less than a hot chicken more so than cold on mark down.

Prepper Princess discusses when items get too high, you’ll refuse to pay the price. For example, when chicken is priced at $5 per pound, she refuses to buy it, which is how I feel about beef prices. I simply will not buy beef when it is so expensive right now. Even if other people are willing to pay those prices we need to decide if we are willing.

Saving Money on Entertainment

I’ve been watching Nurse Jackie this week through our free streaming service this week. I saw it being played on TikTok and decided to try it out. I’ve been enjoying Jackie and how she relates to her family, friends, coworkers and patients. She is very forgiving and accepts them where they are in life.

That’s all the news I have to report from here this week. How has your week been?

Thank you for dropping by my frugal blog, you are always welcome here.

We would love to hear all about your week in the comment section.

  1. It got a bit heated, and a bit rude I think in the comments on Frugal Queen when the one comment was basically saying no all the time to meeting up with friends led to little socialization and loneliness. The other commenters dragged her saying then they weren't true friends, or she should have suggested a free activity. I don't know, it felt a bit harsh. Yes, sometimes people want to enjoy a meal or drinks out with friends and not at a house. They want the ambience of an outing, and yes, if told no too often, they'll stop asking. Maybe more of a balance could be had, but never having an invitation accepted unless on their terms, can get old, but doesn't mean they're not friends. I sometimes find frugal bloggers, vloggers, can get a bit self righteous, especially when it comes to building social connections.

  2. That fix was sure cheaper than buying a new washer. Appliances are super expensive anymore.
What a windfall you made on the knives. That is just great. Life is just full of lots of little ways to gain a buck here and there and to save one or two as well. Love it. Have a great weekend.

  3. (Little Penpen) great job on the vaccuum. It’s more fun to vacuum when it’s easier! And very awesome on the pocket knives! Some of those are very collectible. Also, old cigarette lighters— did he have any of those? I’m glad you had a great week!

    1. Thank you, Penny. I'll be sure to tell Bailey. Much more fun to vacuum when it is easier! LOL

I think he sold all his cigarette lighters because I didn't find any. He had a big one and I didn't find it either, so I think he may have sold it already.

I hope you have a great week too.

  4. Nice sale on the pocket knives. I love when something sells for much more than expected. I got paid for a three day usability study I did last week, so that was nice to see. (Hawaii Planner)

  5. Great deal on the vacuum. Our son has a light weight one and he really likes it. Good for you on getting so much for those pocket knives.
I do watch a couple of frugal bloggers, and take a great deal of what they say with a grain of salt. I can not purchase groceries for the prices they do and really sometimes their total budget is actually more than we spend. A small pension to some is way more than ours (Frugal Queen's and her Hubby is a great deal more than ours). Just saying that you need to do what works for you.

    God bless.

    1. Such a great point, Jackie We all need to do what works for us. Somethings what work for others won't work in our situation, Great point.

  6. Great news about the vacuum and the knives, way to go! Sorry to hear about your washer. Those service fees are getting ridiculous. Every time I call someone, I'm told it'll be a certain non-refundable fee just to show up. Sadly though, I can never think of an alternative plan if we can't diy it. Wishing you and Bailey a very Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Thank you, Bobi. Bailey tried to do a DIY on the washer and said it was not in her wheelhouse, unfortunately. Thank you, and I hope you have a very Happy T day too! :)

  7. Great deal on the vacuum, and I'm so glad you were able to get the washer fixed. Hope it lasts you a long time. Glad you were able to get some money from your blog. I'm sure it takes time to put it together, but I know it helps many people. I've forgotten to go thru your site to Amazon lately; do you still get a little if we make a purchase?
Glad you were able to sell your Dad's knives. I think my husband is going to try to sell a slide rule that his Dad had years ago.
Hope you have a great weekend. It has been cold and windy here.

  8. We turned the heat on last night, but turned it off again this morning. We can wear warmer clothes both day and night, plus the temps are supposed to warm up again Monday.
I agree about keeping your older washer as along as possible. I honestly wish I had my Grandmother's ancient Maytag. She had it from before I was born and it was still a workhorse when she passed away at 102.

    1. I had to turn the heat on in the bathroom this morning as it was very chilly here , but I turned it off when I left. Just enough to take the chill off works. I hope it does warm up a little bit on Monday. Your grandmother's machine sounds so great. I would love a good old wringer washer.
