My Frugal Week
The sad news coming out of Tennessee this week is the passing of county music legend Loretta Lynn. Bailey and I were huge fans of her work. Here is one of my favorite YouTube videos of her singing Love is the Foundation to her beloved Dew.
We went grocery shopping on Tuesday. It’s been a while since I went grocery shopping and I was surprised at all the new food products that were offered. It’s a bit overwhelming when added in with all the shoppers.
Having groceries delivered here or even just doing a pick up has spoiled me. I think I will stick with pick up or delivery for now unless I can go earlier when there are less shoppers.
We had a dogwood tree cut down in our yard this week. It was just on the edge of the driveway and needed to be removed as it was blocking the view for some drivers such as UPS. We had our handyman cut it down for us and I paid him $100 for task, which I know is a very good deal.
Question of the Week
It’s that time of year when it’s getting cooler and soups and stews show up on menus more often. So, the question of the week is what is your favorite soup recipe? You’ll find one of mine in the recipe of the week down below.
Savings of the Week
While I was at Walmart I found a composition book on clearance for 30 cents.
Saving Money In My Frugal Kitchen
We did all the usual things in the kitchen this week such as no eating out, washing dishes every night, using up all our leftovers and not wasting food. We both experienced sticker shock while grocery shopping this week. Simple things like Pillsbury crescent rolls with cherry were selling for over $6.00. It reinforces the idea that cooking from scratch saves money.
Meals This Week
Friday: Chicken Stir Fried Rice with Vegetables.
Saturday: Italian Beef & Cheese Sandwiches, French Fries.
Sunday: Grilled Chicken, Brown Rice, Broccoli.
Monday: Chicken Burritos with Queso and Chips.
Tuesday: Movie Night Pizza
Wednesday: Grilled Salmon, Corn on the Cob, Steamed Broccoli.
Thursday: Polish Sausage, Corn on the Cob, Baked Beans.
Recipe of the Week
This recipe came from a friend of mine back when we lived in Pikeville in the early 1990s. We were both members in one of the home demonstrations clubs that met there once a month. Each member would take turns bringing a different dish each month and this is one she brought one time. It’s definitely a keeper.
Creamy Corn Chowder
Ingredients:
1/4 pound bacon, diced
1 cup onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
2 Tablespoons bacon drippings
2 1/2 cups chicken broth
2 cups diced potatoes
1 - 15 ounce can creamed corn
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon sage
2 cups milk or half and half
Directions:
Brown bacon and drain.
Save 2 Tablespoons drippings.
Saute' onions and green pepper in the drippings until soft.
Add chicken broth and potatoes.
Bring to a boil and simmer until the potatoes are cooked through.
Add corn, seasonings and milk or cream.
Heat through and serve with a hearty bread.
Saving on Entertainment
We watched Maysville this week on Amazon Prime. The story is set in 1929 in Appalachia. Thirteen year old Teddy Rogers pays a penance for a terrible accident in a place where people play by their own rules.
Thank you for dropping by my frugal blog, you are always welcome here.
We would love to hear all about your week and favorite soup recipe in the comment section.
Your gas prices are about a $1 less than ours! It is that time of the year for lots of new seasonal and holiday foods to start appearing at stores. I go early when I shop to avoid crowds. I have still not used delivery yet. I like picking out my own stuff. Your meals sound good. That was a great price for a tree removal! Have a good weekend.
Thank you, Cheryl. That was a great price for a tree removal. He has been such a blessing to us.
I love grocery shopping and picking out my own stuff too. Next month I may go earlier just so I can do that. That makes sense about the new holiday stuff and come to think of it the store had all kinds of Halloween candy in various places.
I don't make soup, as no one in my family will eat it. However, my favorite soup recipe is actually chicken & dumplings in the crockpot. https://www.budgetbytes.com/slow-cooker-chicken-dumplings/
Oh yes, if my family didn’t eat them, I wouldn’t make them either. There are some things I don’t make for that very reason. Great point. Chicken and Dumplings sound great. Thank you for the recipe. 😊
My favorite soup is chicken wild rice. I don't make it often because either from a pouch, it's so full of sodium, or scratch, it's a lot of time and things I might not have on hand. My more regular go to has been chicken tortellini the last few years. I haven't driven since last Friday, which I guess is saving gas. I guess another benefit of having grandpup here. Husband was out running errands anyway, so he added my top off items to his list. I have frozen sweet corn and potatoes and carrots. I might get a chowder if some sort made as well.
Yum, I really like chicken and rice soup too. That was great to have your dh get the things from your list too. Definitely saves on gas. Bailey and I do that also. 😊
Sad about Loretta Lynn. We have lost a lot of the music legends. Our gas prices are $3.39 now. Glad that your prices are a little lower. Everything is so expensive these days. I'm still doing grocery pickups except I venture into Aldi at times. Thanks for the chowder recipe. It sounds delicious, and I have everything to make it. I think my favorite soup lately has been chicken pozole. Whenever I fix it, my son will eat 3-4 bowls for supper. Hope you have a great weekend, and I hope you are feeling better.
Thank you, Kathy. The chicken pothole sounds so good and I love it when my daughter loves what I’m making for dinner. I like doing pick ups at Aldi as they have the best sale prices on produce around here. 😊
I was sad to hear about Loretta Lynn's passing this week, too. Such a treasure! Your soup sounds amazing to me. I love chowders. My plans are to make a big pot of chili this Sunday and hoping we can eat on it for several days. Food is awfully expensive these days. I would have definitely have passed on the $6 crescent rolls too. Our gas is $3.49 in my area of NC today.
It’s frustrating to look at the grocery store prices these days. And I read someone say we will just have to get used to it as the prices will not be coming back down. I sure hope that isn’t true. Your pot of chili sounds delicious and this is the perfect weather for it. 😊
Beef Barley is right up there with me too. It’s so satisfying with the barley. I almost ordered some barley the other day, this is the perfect time of year for it.
Late to the party but we buy a lot of our groceries at salvage stores and save a ton of money. Lately we bought a case of 12 Grands crescent rolls for 3.99. You can check the website buysalvagefood.com to see if there are stores in your area.
Hi. For some reason I'm not receiving your emails. I checked my Spam folder and you're not there. Could you check to see that I'm on the mailing list? Or should I re-register? Thank you, Arlene
Hi Arlene, Blogger did away with the email service, unfortunately. If I do find another option for this I will be sure to let everyone know. So sorry about that.
