Frugal Friday ~ July 10, 2020

I can't remember if I told you that I was stung by a wasp the other day while I was getting in my car. Well, it happened again only this time there was a swarm of wasps, so I figured I had a nest built under my car.

When a car sits here parked the majority of the time the wasps will build a nest in it. With the pandemic going on this is what has happened to my car.

So, we took it to the car wash this week and had the undercarriage washed out. It cost me $8.00 to have that done, but I consider it money well spent. Hopefully it will take care of the problem.

We celebrated the fourth of July at home.

One of the snaps came off one of my daughter's cloth pads, so I fixed that for her this week. I have a stash of snaps to work with just like my button jar.

I've been looking at money saving cookbooks on eBay and Etsy and bought several this week. Here are pictures of them if you'd like to see the covers. I love reading old cookbooks like this.

It's been a quiet week here. My unemployment checks have continued, so I've been able to pay on two medical debts I have and even paid one bill in full, so that leaves only the one medical bill left, which will get paid off this year hopefully.

Since we bought the new air conditioner we no longer had any use for the dehumidifier we bought two years ago and sold it on Facebook Marketplace this week and also sold a stair stepping cart, both of which netted us an extra $50 this week.

That's all the news we have to report from here this week. How was your week?

  1. Sorry you were stung but the money spent removing all the offending nest was well worth the expense.

  2. Cookbooks look interesting. Please let us know when you try recipes from these books. I too love old cookbooks and craft books.

I’m sorry you got stung by wasps. I try to drive once a week or so for about 5 minutes to make sure everything is fine with the car.

    Have a wonderful weekend, Belinda.

    1. Thank you, Nil. You too. Good advice on driving the car once a week or so, I've been making sure to start it, so at least it will start when I get in it. :) Hope you have a good weekend too.

  3. Wasps make nests behind side mirrors even when i drive the car every day. Then at stores they come out and harass me. I hate them. When i drive it back home, they take up behind the mirror right where they left off. Hate it.

  5. I won't tolerate wasps. We have a person here who comes out and essentially vacuums them up, then sells them to a pharmaceutical company for immune therapy. If we didn't, I would call an exterminator, ecosystem be damned! I love nature, but if I see a wasp, I shamelessly kill it, especially in spring, with the hopes I am destroying a queen.

    1. My daughter feels the same way, Meg. I love that your person is selling them. That's great.

  6. We have paper wasps and have to watch for them constantly. It is the itch after the sting that drives me crazy.

    1. Oh yes Kim! That can drive someone nuts. My Dad sells the paper wasps at the Flea Market. He cuts them down in the winter after they are dead and gone.

  7. Sorry to hear about your wasp encounter. I hope the sting wasn't too bad. They can be painful. The cookbook in the first picture "Money Saving Main Dishes" looks a bit familiar. My mother may have had it, or one like it, when I was growing up. Old cookbooks are the best--good recipes and fun to read.

    1. How neat that your Mom had that cookbook, Frances. I have one more coming this week and I'll post a photo of it as well. They are so fun to read. :)

  8. Old cookbooks have the greatest recipes. Long forgotten recipes too. Can't wait to see what you cook from them.

  10. I am sorry you got a stung by a wasp. Thank gosh you were able to find the nest. We had wasps building a nest in our door frame, of all places. I had to get some wasp spray from Amazon Prime. I hate killing them but I am highly allergic. My dog got stung by a wasp this week. She kept crying out. I wiped her down with a wet cloth to find the injury. I guess she bit the wasp when it stung her and he got stuck in her fur! My DH gave her another shave and bath this week. She's back to her happy self. Her coat grows so fast.

I have been buying books off of Ebay & Amazon. I am still using my library because we have drive through service and contactless scanner to to scan our cards. The library is having so many issues trying to check the books back in and quarantine the books for two days. I don't want to overwhelm them. I was returning my books on due date but racking up late charges. The library has to wait two days to check in. Then they have to go into each account and take off the late charges manually. The poor librarians and all the extra work they have to do now. I would go check my account and I would have $5 in late charges and the next day no charges. That was a bit stressful when it first started happening, lol.

No debt to pay off. All bills paid early. I am only essential shopping. Please cross fingers for us that we get mandatory masking this week. My city hasn't started it and we were the Great Clips outbreak that proved masks are working. DH & I are thinking of going to Menards this week for a "date" night, lol. They are requiring mandatory masks. Not being political. I am high risk for Covid complications- Lupus.

  11. Oh, I so understand your need for masks, Safyne. I am high risk too and the reason why we have stayed home, although we do wear masks when we have to go out of the house. I hope you get the mandatory masks required. They decided not to go with them in the county where I live, but they are required in Chattanooga.

That is good that your library is quarantining the books for two days when they get them back in. Glad they are taking the late fees off. I would be stressed out about that too until they were gone.

    Stay safe out there!
