The Weekend Report

Prom 2K15

The school my daughter attends held their prom last night. The theme was "We Had the Time of our Lives".

I bought her dress and shoes for under $100 and we did her hair and makeup ourselves, we took our own pictures and she used our car to travel back and forth to the event location. I didn't spend money for an expensive dress, professional photographer, limousine, flowers, nails or hair, which are nice to have when you can afford them, but not necessary and even more so when you live on a smaller budget.

When she got home she told me she had the best time and thanked me for helping her make it so special, which made me happy too. In the end, it was all about spending time with her friends and doing something out of the ordinary that made it special. And you don't need to spend money to do that. :)

Peanut Butter
Granola Bars

Today I tried a new recipe for Peanut Butter Granola Bars.

5 cups oats
1 1/2 cups peanut butter
1 cup of honey.

Simply mix the honey and peanut butter and then add the oats and mix well.
Pour into a 13 x 9 pan and press flat with the back of a spoon.
Refrigerate for approximately two hours and then cut into bars.

I wrapped these individually for lunch boxes this week. I ended up with 16 in all.  :)

  2. We did all 3 of our kids' proms on the cheap too back in the day. I can't believe what some parents spend on those events!

    1. There are some parents who really do go all out. I'm happy mine had a good time and will have happy memories for a long time.

  3. My dd is 30 so prom wasn't a crazy back then as it seems to be now. My dd did have her hair done, but that was it...no make-up or nails. They did have a limo but she had a date so it was special to her. I'm glad your dd had a good time that's what matters the most.

    The granola bars sound yummy!

    1. Thank you, Mary Lou. I think the French manicure is so beautiful, but I think they are $25 and up. We've never had one to know for sure, lol. Sounds like your daughter had a beautiful prom. :)

  4. I'm so glad your daughter enjoyed her prom, Belinda!

And you're right -- prom is NOT about the limo, or the hair and makeup stylist, or even the flowers. It is about doing something fun, dressy and memorable with friends.

My two daughters had a super wonderful time at their proms. Both wore thrifted dresses, shoes they owned (nice sandals that they still wear to church), and they wanted a little help from me with hair and make-up.

I think that there are more families than we know, who choose to "do" prom inexpensively, as we have. It's encouraging for others to read that prom doesn't have to be a huge expense.

French manicures are not hard to do at home, BTW. They sell French manicure kits, with the pink-ish polish, and white pens for going over the tip area. But I think it's easier and gives a great one-night look, to just use clear polish that I already have, and a white pencil that I use under the tips. The white pencil will wash off in a day, but it is just soooo easy to touch-up and hard to mess up. The bonus to doing your own manicure is that you don't risk getting one of those nail infections that you hear about in the news associated with going to nail salons.

    1. I need to get one of those pens and do my own French manicure at home. They always look so nice to me.

So glad to hear your girls did Prom inexpensively too. The teacher here who was in charge of Prom actually had free dresses to give away in her classroom. I saw them and some of them were actually very nice. I should have mentioned that in my blog post. Another idea for another day. :)

  5. Having the best time translates to a sweet memory for your daughter. :) What color(s) did she choose to wear for the prom?

You asked what we did over the weekend. I assure you, we did nothing as exciting as your weekend.

    1. Thank you, her dress was dark purple. We thought it was navy blue in the dressing room, but it turned out to be purple. It's hard to tell though in the photos.
