Frugal Things We Did This Week

I hope all my readers have had a great week.

I worked two days this past week. I could have worked three, but I had something to take care of one day and if it pans out, I will tell you all about it next week. :)

Now onto what we did this week...

We ate ALL of our leftovers from last week. The Potato Soup, Spaghetti, Apple Crisp, and cooked apples, all gone.

I sold a pair of shoes for $10 on my Facebook yard sale group, which meant I removed them from Ebay and saved myself from paying Ebay and Paypal fees.

Yard Sales

I picked up a Bananagrams game for $1.00, which was complete with all tiles and instructions. I bought these because I need the Scrabble-like tiles for a project, but the game looks like fun, so I might keep it and look for more tiles. Either way, this was much cheaper than Scrabble tiles are going for on Ebay right now.

I picked up four cds for $1.00 each. We will add any songs we want to our i-Tunes account and then trade them at McKays making them free for us to own.

I found a bean pot here in Tennessee! I've not seen one of these here at a yard sale before and was excited to see it. I only paid $2.00 for it too, which was a sweet price.  ♥♥♥

Lastly, I found a brand new Wilton Mini Cake Pan in the heart shape for $3.00.

My daughter had her own stash of goodies she picked up too including a really cute lime green jacket. No photo of that today.

Afterwards I took her to the mall to spend her birthday money. My "little girl" turned 17 years old on Friday. Afterwards I took her out to eat at her favorite restaurant and bought her dinner, which she loved. And by the way, I did not buy anything at the mall. LOL

Ebay

This month I've not sold very much on Ebay. I don't know if it's because people are afraid to spend their money due to the economy or if they are saving money for Christmas. Either reason is understandable.

I feel like I spent more money than usual last week on gas and meals out and dd's birthday. I need to go to the store for my Mom today and pick up some things for her and I need to get the Sunday paper for the coupons today, but after that I am going back into gazelle mode.

Did you have a good frugal week?

  1. I've seen a few Shabby Chic frames with scrabble tiles in dotted around different Vintage fairs I've been to lately. Who would of thought scrabble tiles would be worth a few bob eh? (just looked on Ebay)

    1. Yes, they are worth something that's for sure. If I see any at yard sales, I will be picking them up. :)

  3. They grow up so fast; don't they? :-)

Great finds on the yard sales. We've not had as frugal a week as I would have liked, but some things just can't be helped. Doctor's visit and pharmacy -- even with good insurance -- ouch! Then rather than shop around since I haven't been feeling well, we ran into Aldi and grabbed a few oddities. Not perfect, but the best over all low prices so I can live with that.

I did buy two old windows from a local "online" yard sale. I've been searching for an "art" piece for my dining area. I just haven't found one that I was totally in love with and I wasn't going to spend a fortune -- even stuff that was just "okay" in my mind wasn't worth it if I wasn't in love with it. My goal is to create my own faux stained glass piece.

    1. Yes, they do, Shara. The days are long, but the years are short.

Your faux stained glass piece sounds beautiful. I would love to see a photo of it when you are done. You are so creative and motivated. I wish I had half of your energy. :)

  4. Happy birthday to DD!!! that reminds me that you and one of my kiddos were born about a month apart.

    Beautiful bean pot. Love it.

It is all about how one measures frugality with my household.

With many family scripts, some cost hundreds while others cost under $1. The dollar scripts are dandy but can not manage without the ones that cost hundreds. Comparing pharmacies is imperative when insurance does not include copay. Are other PCP's in addition to mine giving 30-day instead of 90-day scripts? Drug shortages.

Pharmacies can vary prices by hundreds. One mandatory script at Costco costs hundreds more than Sam's, for example. I corrected PCP when he told me that Costco's scripts are best priced and explained, hoping he passes along information to others.

Received a letter this week from WalMart about Sam's brand sanitary wipes bought after a certain date. I had stored 2 cases of sanitary wipes with possible bacteria. Sam's refunded. Changed to Huggies wipes from Sam's. Cost more but my preference.

Why 2 cases of sanitary wipes? I would ask. We stock them for emergencies, along with bottled water. Usually, we do not consume bottled water, but we do store it. Months near expiration date, if unused, water is donated. No waste.

Did you read the article that General Dollar is over-all cheaper than other similar stores? Of course, it is according to what we purchase. Recently, I bought some of the worst nail polish and facial foundation at Dollar Tree. Never again, and I tossed it. Still, I am a Dollar Tree shopper.

    1. My dd has a huge collection of nail polish, all bought inexpensively. She loves to shop with coupons at Target in the makeup section and looks over the clearance items very carefully. She also trades for them too, so she has created a big collection of them over the years.

I hadn't read the article about the Dollar General, but do believe that for certain items. I also like Dollar Tree too, so many good deals to be had there.

I didn't know that about the Sam's Club wipes. I do like to keep them on hand for certain things. Sometimes they dry out but I just add water to reactivate them. lol

Thank you for the birthday wishes my DD. I've been wondering who you are and from what I can tell, this must be Anna. It's so good to "see" you here. I have really enjoy reading your comments. :)

    2. Are your DD's trades sealed? Bateria and fungus concern me on a personal level. Years ago, family member contracted a fungus (unknown how) that was serious enough to almost cancel a dream trip. Destination country could not have treated the fungus had it worsened.

This past week, as I recall, there was a feature about Target's prices being as much as 50% higher than similar stores. Of course, that would be not every product. Target came in dead last for cost with a very wide margin.

Dollar General may be cheaper but their product quality decreased over the years. I use DG for generic medical ointments and some wash cloths. Must be careful about wash cloths there because some are poorly hemmed, but some are very good and cheap. Be prepared to fall off your chair. This two-some household probably has 60+ washcloths --- and uses them.

For years, I used Dollar General generic laundry detergents. Never saw my whites turn gray. Huge bottles cost $3.

Dollar Tree is a store that can be fun or blah to roam. Never buy anything that enters my tummy at Dollar Tree. The content may originate from countries that aren't labeled. USDA does a poor job with our USA food conrol.

The Sam's sanitary wipes with possible bacteria was frightening. We had not used any that was in question. We use 2 Sam's and a Costco. The better Sam's is near Costco and many places I shop.

Never a problem now with wipes drying out. They have in the past, however.

17 was a memorable year for me. Wishing the same for your DD. :)

  5. I mentioned the toe fungus to dd so she would know. Better to be safe than sorry.

I love to pick up wash clothes at yard sales both here and in Illinois. Some I've bought here work great for messy jobs, but not nice enough for the bathrooms. Some I've bought in Illinois were nice enough for guests! We have a large collection too, but I've not counted them. My sister doesn't have very many because they don't use them like we do. It makes me want to go out and buy her some. lol

Thank you for the good wishes for dd.
