Menu Plan Monday ~ Saving Money in our Frugal Kitchen ~ September 30, 2024

 My Frugal Week


One way we save money on our grocery budget is by keeping our grocery spending under control. We spent $62.89 on groceries in September. We did that by relying on our food storage and by looking for opportunities to get free food in our community. 

Several organizations give away free produce at certain times and sometimes people will do a pantry cleanout, so I look for those. Free food is a great way to improve your food economics. Some people will turn down free items offered to them for various reasons, but if you need the items, then by all means, accept the free items. Accepting and using free items is a good way to save money. 

Other ways to save money include making a grocery list and sticking to it and our budget. Going without a list is not an option if I want to stay under my grocery budget. Of course, if I come across a good markdown I'm always open to the possibilities. 

When I do go out of the house to run errands, I make sure I'm prepared for the day. Being prepared means having a plan for my spending. I make sure to have breakfast before I leave and bring a lunch or snack with me depending on how long I'll be out of the house. 

Since we live rural, our travel times are more than if we lived in town, so I prepare for that. The food I bring ensures I'm not buying fast food.  Eating out and convenience foods are more expensive these days. 

If you are prone to picking up dinner on the way home because you are tired, plan your meal the night before. Place meat to thaw in the refrigerator, cut up vegetables, and set out the slow cooker to be ready in the morning. 

Toss everything into the slow cooker and dinner will be ready when you get home. Doing this ensures I keep on track spending wise because it's easy to order food or go out to eat when I'm tired.  
 
We plan meals around basic foods and what is on sale. We very rarely include steaks or roasts or lobster in our menus. If we do it's because I found them on markdown or on sale. 

We also serve meatless meals each week to save money on meat. I keep an inventory of the foods I have on hand and update them every few months or so. In fact I did an inventory of my tomato products just this past week. 

We do our very best to avoid food waste. We find ways to preserve food like canning, freezing, or dehydrating when we cannot eat it all. If we have leftovers we eat them until they are gone or  freeze the leftovers. We do not have extra money to be throwing away food. 

Doing without and making do was something people did during the Great Depression and the war years that followed. Many people didn’t have a choice if they wanted to eat. People ate a lot of beans because they were cheap and nutritious. Casseroles and soups were made more and became popular because little bits of food could be mixed together to make a more filling meal.  


What’s for Lunch


We've been enjoying our planned overs from Souper Sunday soup for lunches during the week. Soup is a great money saving and a healthy food for lunch. I know I've lost a couple of pounds this month as I've been incorporating it more and more into my diet.


Another lunch item this week involved potatoes, both sweet and yellow. Sometimes we have leftover potatoes from dinner the night before, so I took some of them this week and would reheat them in the air fryer. They made a delicious lunch a couple of days this week.

 

What’s for Dinner

Meatless Monday & Tuesday ~ Vegetable Soup & Cornbread. This soup started off with an onion sautéed in olive oil. Then I added tomatoes, beans, corn on the cob that I cut off the cob, and carrots as well as a few spices like bay leaves and fennel. It was like a big bowl of comfort. 

Wednesday & Thursday ~ Turkey Burgers made into Salisbury like Steaks with mushrooms in Tomato Gravy, Roasted Potatoes, Field Peas, Toasted Garlic Buns.

Also on Thursday evening I put some pinto beans on to soak overnight and then on Friday I cooked those in the Instant Pot with onions and garlic. I want to have these on hand for meals over the weekend.

Friday ~ Salmon Patties, Cabbage, Carrots, Cucumber Salad.

Saturday & Sunday ~ Chili ~ It's chilly, wet and rainy here, which makes it the perfect time for chili. I used some of the pinto beans I made on Friday, added ground beef, tomatoes, onions, green chilies, garlic, chili powder, salt & pepper.

Fourth Frugal Friday of September 2024

My Frugal Week


Bailey got this really neat tool at the consignment sale for 50 cents. It's a premium empty bottle kit and they sell them on Amazon. It has a pull down spout so you can get the product out without having to put it into another container. 

Freebies

Freebies was the name of the game this week. 


On Sunday our local Sharp agency had a free pet food clinic. I went and came home with a fourteen ounce bag of Meow Mix and a bag of cat litter. 

Utah State University has a free Soup or Sauce Mix (SOS) booklet on their website.  There are fourteen pages in the booklet with recipes for different soups. 


Pictured are two free towels from the recent trade/swap day. They are 100% cotton and nice and fluffy. I also picked up a reusable Cracker Barrel bag that I washed, but the outside disintegrated in the washer, so that’s my frugal fail of the week. 😂


We used our Pizza Hut Rewards account to get a free movie Tuesday night.

Meal Plan Monday ~ Saving Money in my Frugal Kitchen (9-23-2024)

 My Frugal Week

Ceylon Cinnamon is the best type of cinnamon to use, and is considered better than the Saigon variety. But, I recently ran out of the Ceylon variety. So, I've ordered more Ceylon cinnamon, but in the meantime I'll use up these other two varieties that we have on hand. 


I've been reading Jackie Clay's Pantry Cookbook for free online this week and she writes, "with the ease of our fast-paced society, keeping a well stocked panty has fallen into disuse." She goes on to say that, "gardens were let go too". 

I find that so sad to think about and is something I've realized the older I get that generations younger than my grandparents do not garden the way my grandparents generation did. 

I've discussed it before, but my grandfather had multiple gardens all year long and my grandmother preserved all of it, so they would not go hungry. 

All meals and snacks were prepared at home this week as usual. We reserve eating out for special occasions in these days of higher restaurant prices. We served two meatless dishes this week to save money on our grocery budget. .

Recipe of the Week

This is from Grandma Donna's website: 

Pate Chinois 


Ingredients:


1 pound ground beef

6 medium size potatoes

One can of creamed style corn

½ onion chopped

A small amount of milk and butter. 


Directions:


If you don’t have milk and butter you can still make this dish.

First peel and cut up your potatoes. 

Boil the potatoes until done to make mashed potatoes.  

When you boil the potatoes and drain them you can save the potato liquid to add in another dish or use the liquid when mashing the potatoes if you do not have milk and butter. 

Brown your ground beef in a skillet and then add chopped onion.

Cook until the onion is just a bit cooked. 

You are going to layer this dish in an oven proof pot or oven proof deep dish. 

Place the cooked meat and onions in the bottom of the pot. 

Add the can of cream style corn then on top of the corn add the mashed potatoes.  

Place in a 350 degree oven and bake for about 30 minutes.

 
What’s for Dinner

Monday ~ Roasted Turkey Breast with Homemade Gravy, Orange Mashed Cauliflower, and Sauteed Cabbage with Onions. 

Taco Tuesday ~ Cauliflower Taco Meat, Corn Tortillas, Lettuce & Tomatoes. 

Wednesday ~ Turkey Pot Pie, Jell-O Fruit Salad. 

Thursday & Friday ~ Tacos, corn tortillas, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. I had a two pound package of ground beef thawed, so I split it into two meals. I made tacos with one pound and stretched that meat with potatoes and beans and then made meatballs with the other pound and saved those for another meal later. 

Saturday ~ Pate Chinos, which is from Grandma Donna's website and reminded me of my cheesy potato recipe. I served it with Corn on the Cob, and Steamed Carrots.

Third Frugal Friday of September 2024

My Frugal Week

I'm still gathering items for the next consignment sale, Grown Zone. I don't spend much time on it each day, but rather when I put dishes away in the kitchen and see something I no longer need, I'll stick it in the consignment box. 


On Tuesday I went to the retina specialist and received injections in both eyes and will return in four weeks. He said my eyes were better than last time, so injections work better every four weeks for me at this time. Afterwards we went to CVS to use  our $10 monthly reward and picked up this box of baby wipes for free.  

Afterwards we came home and I heated up part of Monday night's dinner for lunch. Then I stripped my bed of all the sheets and bed clothes, washed them, and remade the bed. 

I sold one item on eBay this week that I was going to donate to the consignment sale, so that was good. 

I called Verizon this week and set up my payment on automatic, which will save me $20 per month. 

On Wednesday I had some errands to run and picked up some groceries from Walmart. I was shocked when I walked in and the first thing I saw was an aisle of Christmas items for sale. They are definitely pushing it earlier each year. 

The cabinets in our kitchen have veneer faces on them and one of the bottom pieces was coming off on one end, so I fired up the hot glue gun and fixed it, so it will now stay in place and stop dropping down when I put glasses away, which is a very affordable way to fix something. That and duct tape are our friends. LOL 

Thursday and Friday I measured and processed clothing items for Bailey's online shops. 

I went over my budget again on Thursday for next month. I've been very careful not to spend any extra money this month and only buying the bare essentials at the grocery store. 

We washed all our kitchen linens this week along with our cloth napkins. I've not bought paper towels for several years now. #reusablecloth

We've been enjoying cooler temperatures this week. I've had the air off in my office/bedroom all week and had the windows open, which I love.

Walmart had their two pound blocks of cheese on rollback this week for $6.34, which works out to $1.59 for an eight ounce block, which is  good price, so I bought two of them.

Avoiding Spending

This week I didn't avoid spending money as I spent on a few groceries ($28) and dewormer for the cats. I ordered the Profender from CanadaVet because the medicine is cheaper there and does not require a prescription, so potentially a lot of savings there. 

I have no issues with going to the vet, but I don't want to pay for a visit to get a prescription when I know they need medicine for fleas, ticks, or worms.

Menu Plan Monday ~ Saving Money in my Frugal Kitchen

My Frugal Week

The yogurt I made last week was pretty thin for yogurt, but I didn't let it go to waste. I used some of it to make cornbread, and some of it I used as the milk in pistachio pudding. Both were eaten, so no food waste there. 

We used up our dinner leftovers for lunches this week as usual, so no food waste there either. 

Recipe of the Week


This Turkey Gravy on Biscuits is a recipe from The Tightwad Gazette. We were recently given two packages of turkey burgers from a friend, so I used this recipe for inspiration. I added beef bouillon and Worcestershire sauce to doctor them up to our liking. I didn't serve ours with biscuits as I didn't want the carbs. 

What’s for Dinner

Monday ~ Chicken Teriyaki, Butter Beans, Steamed Broccoli.

Tuesday ~ October Beans, Collard Greens, & Cornbread.

Wednesday ~ Egg Roll in a Bowl, Corn. 

Thursday ~ I had chili on the menu, but had some cabbage I wanted to use, so I made an Unstuffed Cabbage Casserole for dinner. I served this with corn on the cob, roasted sweet potatoes, and watermelon. 

Friday ~ Salmon Patties, Fried Potatoes, Green Peas, and watermelon. 

Saturday ~  One way we save money here is by eating our leftovers, even if we each have something different. We use up what we have in our pantry, fridge and freezer. Having no food waste is one key to a frugal budget. 

For dinner on Saturday, I reheated the Cabbage Casserole from Thursday, which was enough for one  person, so I also used a package of BBQ Pork for the other person. To those I added some Hot Potato Salad, and then used the Green Peas from Friday. 


Souper Sunday ~ I decided to use up a dry Frontier Soup Mix I had in my pantry to make a South of the Border Chicken Tortilla Soup. It also allowed me to use up a container of chicken, a jar of salsa, the last of the green peas, and the corn off three ears of corn. I should call this Use It Up soup. It made ten cups of soup in all and will be used for dinner today and lunches for the next two days.  #useitup

I made some cornbread to go with the soup. 

I've been experimenting with making a smaller batch of cornbread. I take three or six tablespoons of cornmeal, one egg, and two to four tablespoons of milk (depends of if it's just me or me & Bailey eating) and mix together. 

Then I use a Dash waffle iron to make the cornbread. They only take a couple of minutes to cook, it's a small enough batch so there is none wasted, and I'm using  a small appliance to save on electricity by not using my oven to make cornbread. It's a win-win situation. 

Monday - Cauliflower Taco Meat, Corn Tortillas, Pinto Beans, and Corn.

Second Frugal Friday of September 2024

My Frugal Week


Last Thursday morning I came out of the house to feed the cats and looked down in the moat and there was a bear in the yard. He saw me about the same time I saw him and this is a picture of him retreating. Life is always an adventure in the woods.

Autumn is definitely in the air as temperatures here are down a bit. The morning temperature on Monday was hovering around 50 degrees and I was chilly when I woke up that morning. I know we will still have hot weather for another month or so, but Fall is definitely around the corner. 

We received a check for $209 from the consignment sale just for stuff we had hanging around here that we no longer needed. There is another sale coming up at the end of September that we are gathering for stuff to sell. Here are the details if you are local to here: Grown Zone

Other frugal things we did this week include:

- Line dried several clothing items on racks rather than run the dryer. 
- Cancelled one subscription to avoid a monthly charge.

Saving on Electricity 


This is a screen shot of our electric usage over the last week. On Friday, September 6th I was able to turn the air off and keep it off for the majority of the day. There is a big difference between that day and the day before on Thursday, which was a laundry day. Turning off the ac makes a big difference in our electric bill. 

Fads ~ Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

Fads come and go, and in the end, thrift stores and yard sales will be flooded with items someone just had to have at one point.  We regularly see bread machines, blender ball cups, clothes, shoes, and kitchen storage containers on a regular basis.  

Bailey has just returned from the consignment sale and she made the comment that there were a lot of Stanley like cups for sale this time. They have been all the rage since before Christmas. And like other fads, they will die out soon. I didn't buy myself a Stanley cup, but just kept using the reliable reusable cup I've aways used. 

Freebies


On Friday I had an appointment and there was a representative from Humana there giving free fresh food to everyone. She gave me four potatoes, two apples, two oranges, and one onion. Her main objective was selling insurance, but she wasn't pushy at all, and I thought that was so thoughtful.  

I also had  friend give me three zucchini, seven ears of corn, and a watermelon out of her garden this week. 

I received a brown paper grocery bag filled with brown grocery bags, which I love to line my garbage can with. This is how my Mom lined her garbage can back in the day, and it always reminds me of her.

Brand name companies do in fact make some store brand items. Check out this photo from a can of Aldi tomatoes where the label is falling off and you'll see the name Red Gold, which I consider a fancier name brand. Pretty neat in my book. 

And in the news this week, Consumer Reports has the article, Grocers are adding more private labels to store shelves, cutting food costs.  This article states that the following store brands and which name brand companies produce them. 

Costco’s Kirkland Tuna is made by none other than Bumblebee Tuna, Walmart’s Great Value Canned Vegetables are sourced from suppliers like Del Monte, Green Giant, and Libby’s. ALDI’s Millville Cinnamon Crunch Squares are made by General Mills, which also makes Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Publix Brand Deli Meats are made by various meat suppliers, including Boar’s Head and Hormel, Kroger Brand Cereals are manufactured by General Mills and Kellogg’s, and finally, Food Lion Brand Coffee is manufactured by Kraft Heinz and J.M. Smucker Company.
Savings of the Week


This week I used one of my five Circle K rewards to take 25 cents off a gallon of gas and ended up paying $2.33 per gallon.
