Frugal Friday ~ June 12, 2020

On Monday as I was fixing lunch I realized I didn't have any hot dog buns for the three remaining hot dogs we had left.

I made my daughter one on a hamburger bun and then I used the heel of a loaf of bread for mine, which worked out really well.

We ate tuna salad on crackers this week because I thought I was out of bread, but then I found another loaf we had bought among the hamburger buns.

We have plenty of hamburger buns as the requested hamburger I order was out of stock when my grocery pick up order was picked up. That left us with buns and no meat. No worries as we will find ways to use those up too.

I've mentioned before about not liking the shape of the Kraft tarter sauce containers. I have to cut them open in order to get out all that remains in the bottle.

It's a flaw in the design of the bottle, which I'm sure is done so you can't get it all out. But I am on to their game and cut the tops off three bottles this week and you can see how much I was able to get out when I was done.

This is a victory for me in saving money. Just like cutting open the tubes of toothpaste and lotion. Every little bit we can save will help us stretch our resources that much further.

In other news this week...

So, I decided that particular memory foam mattress we recently ordered was not for me. I honestly had trouble turning over in it without hurting my knee. And once we got to studying it, I realized I had ordered the wrong one. So, we returned the mattress we had and bought the correct one.

I honestly wish we had a video going when we "packaged" up the mattress we were returning. It was rolled up when it came here and the best we thought we could do was to fold it three ways. We ended up folding it in half and laughed so hard during the process our sides were splitting.

Good times! Ha! Ha!

The newest mattress has memory foam, but also has inner spring coils and is exactly what I wanted. I slept very well on it last night.

Back in May I received a check for $42.26 from my auto insurance company due to less driving due to COVID-19. It was a nice surprise.

I received a notice yesterday that my claim for unemployment was approved and I should expect money in the next ten days.

The notice also stated I could get an approval or denial and any denial would supersede any approval.

Also, the department I work for could deny my claim. I don't think that will happen since I know one other sub who is getting unemployment.

Guess what? I received my first unemployment check this morning! I was very surprised at how quickly it came. I'm very grateful as I didn't expect to be eligible for it.

We did venture out of the house on Wednesday. I picked up an RX at Publix, paid for online, so it was a contactless pickup through their drive-thru.

Picking up the RX at Publix cost me $16 verses the same RX being mailed to me from CVS for $53. It's a no-brainer for me, so we picked it up and saved over $30.

We also picked up a small grocery order of milk and bread from Walmart, which was also a contactless pickup.

This week I ordered and received some spices from Amazon. If you're looking for inexpensive spices, look up Jackie's Kitchen brand on Amazon.

Here are the prices I paid this week:

Jackie's Kitchen Bay Leaves 71¢
Jackie's Kitchen Basil 79¢
Jackie's Kitchen Chili Powder $1.42

That's all the news I have to report from here this week. How were things for you this week?

  2. Those mattresses they mail you have always amazed me. It seems like some kind of magic!!! LOL
Glad you got your unemployment - that sure will help out. It would be nice if you got some back pay - but I guess any at all is wonderful.
I use bread for about everything - that is the kind of 'buns; we had growing up. Hamburger, hotdogs, or bologna - it was all on the same thing!!
    Have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you, Cheryl.
We used to eat hamburgers on sandwich bread when we ran out of buns. We did that many times. The unemployment will definitely help out. The newest mattress was funny. You could hear it inflating with air instantly when we cut the plastic wrap.

  3. Thanks for the heads up for Jackie's. I have never seen it before.
We use leftover hamburger buns for garlic bread for TheHub. I butter it, sprinkle a little garlic salt on it and run it under the broiler. He loves it and it gets rid of any leftovers.

    1. You're welcome, Anne. I had never seen those spices either, but the price is great! That is a great way to use up leftover buns. I have some right now that I need to do that with.

  4. Thanks for the tip on cutting the tartar sauce bottle. There was a lot in there. I will be cutting ranch dressing bottles now.
Glad you found a mattress that works. Please give us a review once you've tried it out for a few weeks. I would have loved to see a video rolling up the old mattress.
I checked the spices and thought it was expensive until I realized it was 8 jars.
So glad you received an unemployment check. I know that will help.
    Have a good weekend.

    1. You're welcome, Kathy. There is a lot in those bottles! I rinse some of them out with just a little water, like ranch and spaghetti sauce.

Thank you so much, I'm tickled about the unemployment check.

I hope you have a good weekend too.

  5. We bought into the hype, (or rather, DH did) on memory foam. So, last year when it came time to replace our 20 year-old mattress, he insisted we try memory foam, and we also bought an adjustable base. I didn't like the mattress in the store, and I liked it even less on the bed. I was told it took some getting used to, but after two weeks, I decided it had to go. I felt like I was sleeping in a sponge. It was terrible--hard to roll over, hot, it even made my jaw hurt. I also hated how low it made the bed. While we typically don't go to big box stores, I am thankful I insisted on using a major mattress place, (sensing I would want to switch it out) as exchange was easy peasy. We replaced it with a hybrid--a pillow top on top of conventional coil mattress, which is similar to what we had before, which was the most comfortable mattress in the world (until it wasn't.) The only problem with this new one is it is very deep--I need 21" fitted sheets. Not sure why I didn't pick up on that in the store. In any case, the manager of the mattress store told me he sensed I would return it, as people of smaller stature tend to dislike memory foam. Never again.

    1. That is similar to how I felt about it too, Meg. It was hard to roll over and the bed was lower, which I did not need. I felt like I could even feel the box spring thru ended up with one you eventually liked too.

  7. I’m glad you received the unemployment very quickly.

Ha ha I wish you had a video of packing the mattress. Once I bought a mattress topper online, and I was amazed at how they packed it so small. As soon as I opened the package it expanded. I can imagine the trouble you went through to re-pack a mattress!

    1. Thank you, Nil.

LOL...packing the mattress was hard, which was what was making us laugh so much. At one point Bailey had straddled it like a horse trying to get it smaller. lol
