Of course, I always doctor up the dressing mix by adding crumbled cornbread, onions and celery, which I saute in butter, onion soup mix for extra flavor, and plenty of chicken broth to moisten the dressing.
I made a double batch of the dressing and then divided it up into six dinner sized portions and put the majority of them into the freezer for later use.
I had onion soup mix on my grocery list when I went to Food City the other day. I picked up a new box for $1.19, but then found one for 60¢ in the Crash and Burn section, so I bought it instead and put the other one back on the shelf.
Publix had two things on sale that I picked up this week. One of them was Welch's grape juice, which was buy one get one free. The best deal though was the Hellman's mayonnaise. They had a coupon for $2.50 off one jar in their flyer, so I paid $1.23 for each jar, which is a great deal for our favorite mayo.
What have you been doing in your frugal kitchen this week?
Hi Belinda, I enjoy reading your money saving, frugal cooking posts. It is so nice to read about a "kindred spirits" life. Today I am making beef barley soup using organic veggie scraps to help flavor the broth. In the past I would have tossed them. Of course I had to was the celery & carrots with baking soda to make sure they are Super clean before scraping them. I plan to use cooked ground beef as the beef part of the soup instead of the stew meat I would normally use. Only 1/2 a pound of meat to my soup pot filled with water and beef stock. I hope it comes out good. Thanks for all your inspiration.
Another savings this week was Hodgson Mills buckwheat flour for $2.49 in the clearance section of my local Kroger. It was a 2 1b. bag that normally goes for $7.49 Wow! That stuff is expensive. It expires in March 2017. I'm going to use it for buckwheat pancakes. I think they may have a higher glycemic index than white flour. Something new for me to try to help keep blood sugar under control.
Hi Belinda, That's an amazing deal on the mayonnaise. I'm glad you were able to pick up a couple of jars at that price. That pre-made cornbread dressing will be a handy side dish, for busy evenings. Good work!
I feel like this past week I was just trying to keep my head above water. It was the week I did our taxes. So any kind of homemade dinner was considered a success!
Thanks, Lili. I thought it was a great deal on the mayonnaise too. I should have picked up some more, but went on the last day of the sale and didn't make it back later.
Oh wow, you had a busy week doing taxes. Some days like that it is harder to put a homemade dinner on the table for sure.
These are the type that come from Chinese restaurants that they use for take out. You can buy them on Amazon. I love the little soup ones with the lids. This is just an example:

Good bargains and freezer preps for future meals, Belinda. Do you recall where you bought the freezer containers? Look good.
