My Frugal Week

Welcome to the Frugal Workshop. Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day here with a temperature of 61 degrees and today the rain has set in for the day.

I spent several hours outdoors yesterday enjoying the weather and our cats. I even pulled out a bicycle rack we no longer use and cleaned it up in order to sell it.

Something else I sold this past week was my Oldsmobile 1998 Cutlass.

Some readers may recall that I kept this car after I bought a replacement because we hauled off garbage in it, but in the last year it needed an expensive repair that wasn't worth fixing.

Now that we have someone who hauls off garbage for us, I decided it was time to part with the old blue car. So, we sold it to a company that will probably just scrap it.

As I mentioned before, this week I called to have an Rx switched to Walmart. I've also had it set up to be delivered, so I won't have to drive there and use my gasoline. This switch will save me $25 on my prescription, which makes the switch well worth it.

I've been watching Ramit Sethi's YouTube channel this week. I read his book, I Will Teach You To Be Rich, a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

He has a really good article on why his resume got him a job offer from Google. With this in mind I decided to redo my own resume. I'm tired of school being cancelled and losing out on pay. I've lost six days of pay in February, so I'm looking around to see what's out there.

Saturday morning I used up two bananas that needed using and made Banana Pancakes with chocolate chips. They are always a big hit here.

We ate all of our meals at home this week and continued to resist the urge to eat out. We hit a milestone with our savings account in February and we want to keep the momentum going.

What frugal wins or fails did you have this week? We would love to read about it in the comment section.

  1. It's never a bad idea to keep a resume updated. We've not had big savings or side earnings, just slow and steady steps at not doing wasteful actions.

    1. Slow and steady wins the race as they say, Sam. I agree with you on keeping the resume updated too.

  2. -Made all dinners from things in the freezer, or from scratch. Including hosting a party for 12 teen boys. Managed to keep the out of pocket spending to about $20 for the food, and filled in with things at home for the rest.
-Sold an item on eBay, and adjusted eBay prices on other things
-Applied a large Costco rebate (via credit card) to a few purchases, and then used the rest for bills vs impulse Costco purchases. It was actually a hassle to get the money back, which suggests most people just spend it all
-Cancelled a hotel reservation for the boys to ski when I was supposed to be traveling. For several reasons, it didn't make sense after my work trip was cancelled

    1. You've had a good frugal week. That's great that you kept the out of pocket spending on food to $20 for 12 teen boys. That sounds like it would make a great blog post.

  3. Your weather sounds like my weather. Of course, we are not so far apart, but not close, either. Have you ever thought about tutoring? It would help keep the income up a bit. I only got $20/hr, but for this area and my discipline, it was decent.

    1. That is a great idea about the tutoring. Our Silvan Learning Center here closed, but I could look into doing it individually.

    2. I don't recall the name of the company, but you do grading for testing, and you just need a bachelor's in any field. It's suppose to pay nicely. I think I saw it on work at home wife or penny hoarder

  4. Agree it is a good idea to update resume, you never know when it will come in handy! I had a chunk of credit card rewards I applied to our debt. eBay has been slow, so that income is not what I had hoped. Just have to keep pluging along!

    1. Yes, we do have o keep plugging along. eBay has been slow for me too. Good deal on applying those credit card rewards to debt. That's great.

  5. It's good to have an updated resume, Belinda. Though I am not looking for a job at the moment, I updated mine a couple of months ago.

Like Practical Parsimony suggested, tutoring is a good option. I used to charge $25/hr for physics tutoring over 10 years ago, and I'm sure it's more than that now.

    1. That's great that you updated your resume, Nil. I need to do a better job of that than I do now. That is a great price for tutoring. I definitely need to look into that.
