Frugal Friday 3-6-2020

Good Friday morning to all my readers. I hope you've had a great frugal week. This week I was able to sub three days and I'm grateful for that. Tuesday was Super Tuesday, so school was closed as we use our schools here to vote.

Bailey and I made sure to get our votes in too!

My brother and his fiance came from Illinois for a visit this week. We had not seen each other in eight years, so it was good to catch up with him.

We made a trip to Kroger this week to use the $25 gift card they awarded me. They actually put $30 on my card and said the extra $5 was for an order pickup fee, which we didn't use. They let us apply it towards our groceries and not the fee anyway.

These are the items we picked up:

- 12 Chobani yogurts, marked down to 45¢, we had $1 off four coupons, so we paid 25¢ each.
- Kroger brand Yogurt
- one gallon of Milk
- four packages of cream cheese
- two packages of Doritos
- two container of Lay's Stax
- 2 bags Teriyaki Stir-fry that was on markdown
- tomatoes
- bananas

Needless to say I was really tickled to be able to pick up all this food for free.

Other things we did this week to save money include:

Used the same dryer sheet for two loads.

Used a buy one get one free Subway deal to get two foot longs sandwiches for $6.54

Two free orange juices from a student at school.

Submitted my income tax return using the free version of Turbo Tax.

Received a free RX prescription in the mail, which is good for three months.

The sad news that our local IGA is closing came this week. This will officially make the town where I sub a food desert as it will have no grocery store. Thankfully we have other options in other towns.

If you have a Hardee's in your town be sure to stop in on Monday March 9th as they are giving away free sausage biscuits.

Speaking of breakfast, I made my daughter her favorite banana chocolate chip pancakes over the weekend

Gas is currently $1.83 per gallon here.

That's all the news to report from here. How was your week and what have you done to save money this week?

And thank you, eight years is a long time. He is much grayer than he was the last time I saw him. LOL

  4. What a great prize! After a family wedding next weekend and the extra driving and daughter home I' really setting my sights on my house-which keeps me away from spending money I don't want to spend. Our gas is not so low, but I try to make sure an use a coupon-5 cents a gallon minimally adds up when I fill my tank 4-5 times a month.

    1. Thank you, Sam. It was a Twitter contest. Those gas coupons really help to bring the price down. Safe travels for you on the wedding.

  5. We also have that issue with Costco or Sam's Club. We love Kroger and wish it was closer than it is. Because it is far away we only go once every other month or so. I wish you have more selection to choose from too.

  7. Gas is not quite that low here but it is still not horrid. You had a great deal with the gift card for groceries. I am overstocked with groceries and even having my son and daughter in law here for a few days, I should still be able to make it without going to the store for much more than milk.

  9. When I heard about tornadoes in Tennessee, I wondered if your area was safe. I’m glad your area wasn’t affected.

I’m surprised to hear that your town won’t have a grocery store. What if someone doesn’t have transportation to the next town? That must be very difficult.

    1. Thank you for wondering about us during the tornadoes, Nil. There were such devastating losses for that area. It is just heartbreaking.

Yes, people are concerned about not having transportation to those towns, especially many of the elderly. They do have a SETHRA bus that they can ride to for small trips, which costs $2 to $3 per trip. It's not the best solution as they are smaller vans rather than buses, but at least it is something.

  10. I have an incredible amount of shopping options very near me, which means I cherry pick all of them in geographical order from the farthest to the nearest. It takes a little longer but it is kind of fun. Even with insulated bags it doesn't really work in the summer though

    1. That is terrific to have so many shopping options near you, Anne. I would be cherry picking from all of them too. I love grocery shopping, so I would consider it fun as well. :)
