This week I was able to buy a new pair of Chacos for $15.00. The retail price on these is anywhere from $70 and up with some costing over $100. The lady running the yard sale had worn them one time and didn't like them, so I was able to buy them for a great price.
Chacos are very popular around here due to white water rafting and these being shoes that are great to wear in the river. They will replace a pair of flip flops that I've had for about ten years and are simply worn out.
On Saturday we ran multiple errands.
First stop was at Lowe's where we picked up a roll of plastic sheeting to cover a window along with some tacks, and foam insulation to fill in an area where air is leaking in and out of the house.
This work has already reduced the temperature in the house by about 6 to 8 degrees, so a win-win situation.
Next stop was the Flowers Bakery Outlet where we picked up two loaves of bread @ 79¢ each.
Then onto CVS where we picked up an RX along with two free bottles of water.
Next was the Dollar Tree where my daughter picked up several items. She also picked up some of the LA's Awesome Stuff because she had read so many great reviews on it.
Next stop was Food City. All I needed to complete my menus this week was a pie crust, so we stopped in here for that. We also found three bags of sugar in the marked down section.
Dollar General - They sell Campbell's cream of Potato soup in the 13 ounce can for $1.50. The grocery store sells the 10 ounce can for an even higher price, so if I'm using this I like to buy it at the Dollar General.
Sonic & MCD's - picked up two free drinks and received two more receipts to get two more free drinks.
On Thursday my daughter stopped in at Kroger and found the mother lode of meat markdowns.
This week I used the last package of chicken and the last package of ground beef I had in our freezer, so this meat mark down find came at the right time and I consider it a blessing. We are definitely stocked up on meat for a long time to come.
She also found marked down yogurt, milk, almond milk, sugar, and hamburger buns. She hit the store at the right time and was able to cash in on all these deals.
How was your week? We'd love to read all about it in the comment section.
That’s a great deal on the shoes, Belinda. I had to get a new battery for my car. The old one was not even one year old, so the store gave me credit for it, and I paid only the labor cost. I don’t like dealing with vehicles. 🙁
Thank you, Nil. I know what you mean about dealing with vehicles. I'm so thankful my BIL helps us out with ours when he can. I'm glad you only had to pay the labor cost for yours.
Since it has been so warm, we have been taking advantage of our new pool for exercise and cooling off. I have made pasta salads many days, making it in the morning and then we are able to have it for dinner after a few hours swimming. I usually make one with italian dressing, chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, black olives, and tuna. This week I tried a new Pizza Pasta Salad with chopped tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes that I found at the Dollar Tree, black olives, pepperoni, and italian dressing. Both were delicious and refreshing! For breakfast I have started doing smoothies because they are also easy and keep the house cool. My Dollar Tree happens to have a freezer section which carries 10 oz bags of frozen berries, a great price for those, as well as frozen pineapple. I've been making the smoothies with the frozen fruit and greens that I got on clearance in the Fall, blanched and frozen. So easy! Great find on the meat!
Oh how neat that you have a new pool to cool off with, Nichole. I usually make my pasta salad like you described your first one but that second one sounds so good. I like to use a can of diced tomatoes with the juices as the juices mix with the dressing I use and makes it taste so good. I agree with you, they are so refreshing in this heat. That is so great that your Dollar Tree sells berries! That is a great price for them. I need to check ours for those. Thank you for the tip. :)
Great to get deals on meat! That is awesome. For me, we've been spending more than usual (we're in the middle of a bunch of projects, as I'm at home this summer), so trying to optimize the spend with gift cards, rebates, ebates, etc. We also ate at home all week & I met M for a free lunch.
THank you, we were tickled to find those meat markdowns. How neat that you were able to meet for a free lunch, that's great. I hope you get all of your projects done this summer. It will be great when you can check them all off your to do list. :)
Thank you so much, DLL. We were so tickled to find all that meat and especially as our meat at home was practically empty. I hope you have a great weekend.
They started doing that one summer when it was so hot and ever since then they have continued the free waters. I'm not sure if it is all CVSs or just the one we use. It's back in the pharmacy that does this whenever we pick up an RX.
Thank you, so happy for the good things you had this week. Glad the flooding did not affect you. We were surprised to find the sugar. It's not usually a crash and burn item. :)
Thank you, Anne. We were tickled over the meat find and the Chacos. The lady was asking $20, but I asked her if she would take $15 and she did. Thrill of the day! LOL
I belong to a Buy Nothing* Facebook group. One of the members reported an estate sale that included a bunch of food -- at least some of which was out of date. I've written on this topic before and interviewed a USDA official who said that it isn't a safety issue, merely a QUALITY issue. (Unless, of course, the can is swollen or rusty or otherwise sketchy-looking.)
So my partner went over there and boy, did he hit the jackpot: two HUGE plastic totes completely crammed with canned and boxed goods. Some was out of date, some wasn't. We donated a bunch of the non-outdated items to his church's food pantry, and are very happy with what's left.
We've already had several lunches of free soup and free crackers* and anticipate saving a ton of bucks this way. I haven't tried to figure out how much, but the canned soups alone would likely go for at least $40 up here in Anchorage. (Like I said: Those totes were crammed.)
Also made a pretty good crockpot meal from the tote: Combined two cans of tomatoes to the single can of chili, then dumped in some cooked black beans from our freezer. In the fridge we had three uneaten hamburgers that I wanted to use up, so I caramelized some onion in bacon fat, diced the burgers and added them, and seasoned it with cumin, chili powder, garlic, pepper and some celery greens dehydrated from last year's garden. After it had simmered in the slow cooker for a couple of hours, my partner threw in about half a cup of Minute Rice. (We don't eat the stuff normally -- in fact, we buy rice in 20-pound bags at Costco -- but it was in the tote and we will eat it all.)
The result: a very thick, savory stew rather than a liquid-y chili. We ate it with spinach tortillas that cost about 15 cents a bag at the bakery outlet. Yes, we're easily amused.
*If you and your readers aren't familiar with the Buy Nothing groups, it can be a GREAT resource both for getting things you want and finding new homes for things you no longer need. The one in my neighborhood has featured furniture, a washer and dryer (!), a full-size freezer, clothing for all ages, toys, books, gift items -- just a ton of great stuff. DeleteWhy do you get free water bottles at CVS? Is that just your store or is that corporate? Great meat finds.

DeleteGood things--new tires, a few sales, free CFA
ReplyDeleteBad things--freak storm and unusual flooding but not affecting me.
That was a great price on the sugar.

DeleteYou sure got some great deals. Good price on the sandals.
ReplyDeleteWOW on all the met. Good eye to catch that!!!!
Thank you, Cheryl. We were so tickled to find all of that meat.
DeleteWow, wow, wow! That is one serious meat haul! Well done, daughter!
ReplyDeleteI love Chacos. That is a seriously good deal

That is so great, Donna. Thank yu for the information. I'm definitely going to check it out. :)

Right, Pam?! We were so surprised. That is a rare find for sure. Thanks so much. :)
