My Frugal Week

Good Sunday morning to all my readers. I hope you are doing well today. I'm currently experiencing a cold, so I've been doing some self care this weekend.

Schools were closed here on one half of the county on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday due to illness and then on Friday they closed the entire county for illness.

I was scheduled to work on Friday, but that didn't happen. I did work three days though, so I'm very grateful for that.

Echinacea Plus
Today I made myself a green smoothie using beet powder, matcha, and wheatgrass powders along with some other things. I also made myself some Traditional Medicinals Gypsy Cold Care and Echinacea teas.

Gypsy Cold Care

Adding these nutrients will certainly help my body get over the cold quicker and I am already feeling better.  I also added the juice of one organic lemon to my tea and had an orange with breakfast to boost my Vitamin C intake.

One of the best ways we saved money this week was by having three of our male cats neutered.

The Humane Society here had a special recently where they were performing spays or neutering for $20 per animal.

They also included the rabies vaccination and flea and tick control included in the $20 price tag.

Also, they offered worming and ear mite treatment for $5 each. It was such a great deal and we saved over $100 this week by using this service.

DoYogaWithMe.com is a website with free yoga videos. You can select your time from five minutes up to one hundred and twenty minutes and also choose your skill level. Yoga is a great way to perform self care.

This weekend I've spent my time at home taking care of myself, so I've not spent any money or burned any gas in my car, which is great.

I hope all of you are having a lovely weekend. :)

  1. It must be bad there - I don't ever remember school districts being closed for illness. Take care.
What an amazing deal o the cat care. That is fantastic.
    Take care and stay healthy.

  2. I hope you and, evidently, everybody in your county feel better soon!!

I take Vitamin C all Winter as a preventative and I like to also take Elderberry if I feel a cold coming on. I found Hubs some zinc lozenges(like Cold-Eeze, which he likes to take)w/Elderberry so a double whammy knock-out if he feels a cold coming on.

    1. LOL, Thank you, Sluggy. I need to get some elderberry. I had it last year and didn't get sick at all.

  3. The Humane Society provided feline needs for a small price. (!!!) You have prompted me to search Google about ear mite treatment.

Sorry to read about your having a cold and hope it will soon end. A few years ago, I had a lingering cough for about 3 months and thought it would never end.

Reading about others already having received tax return when I have not even looked at new tax forms. When I "get around to it," I will know the exact amount lost when my script insurance removed the medication from its list as of 1/19.

Sam's pharmacist told me she had a generic that might be effective if my gastroenterologist approved. Received his approval for the $10 for 30-day medication in December. The last script receipt in 2018 for the no longer insurance approved med reveals without insurance, it would have cost $1350 for 90 days or $5400 this year. :::gasp:::

With Sam's $100 membership, the script now costs $120. annually instead of $240 with a $50 membership. With the generic's somewhat different formula being effective for me, I am now saving $5280 annually without insurance coverage.

My BIG question: Why didn't my doctor first tell me about the possibility of using the generic? Lost a pile of money using the first medication for about 2 years.

    1. Wow, Anna that is terrible that you dr didn't tell you about the possible generic savings. I'm glad you are saving money now though. We were very tickled with the saving from the Humane Society. They help us keep our pets healthy for very little money.

  6. Belinda, so sorry you have been sick. It sounds like you are taking very good care of yourself. Several public schools districts and private schools in my area have closed for a day or two here and there over the past three weeks because of flu. Other schools just have not hit the magic number of absentees to be able to close. We have been lucky in that illness seems to not have reared its ugly head at my school very much. We are extremely proactive about using hand sanitizer and wiping everything down frequently because we have a student who has cystic fibrosis. Any respiratory illness could have serious consequences for her.

    1. THank you, Frances. That's great that you all are so good about wiping things down there as it could definitely have serious consequences for her. I washed down all the fridge and freezer and water faucet handles today with hot soapy bleach water and the counters as well. I still need to do the doorknobs though. Every little bit we can do will help.

  7. Hi Belinda,
Sorry you've been under the weather! Have you heard of "fire cider"? Ever since I heard about it, I make up a batch just before school starts (it has to sit in a cool, dark place for two weeks) and make sure to have it on hand through the winter. There are a number of different recipes, but essentially it is sliced lemon and ginger (some recipes also include yellow onion, garlic, cinnamon sticks, tumeric, and/or jalapeno) it depends on what you can handle, taste wise, my little ones won't take it with the onions or jalapeno it it. Anyway, you add your sliced lemon, ginger, etc. and cover the whole thing with organic apple cider vinegar. Cover with a non-metallic lid and let sit in a cool, dark place for two weeks, giving it a light shake every few days. When its ready, you strain out the solids, add a cup or so of fresh orange juice (we actually like pineapple juice here) and enough honey to sweeten to the taste. Keeps in the fridge for 6-8 weeks. We take a spoon every morning and night. Take more if you feel like you're coming down with something.

  11. Hope you are feeling better. I have never had all of the schools close due to illness. My son wasn't feeling good either. I then started with a sore throat. Thankfully I had everything needed on hand. I was better in 48 hours. My son took a few days longer. As soon as he didn't feel well I starting taking lots of Vitamin C and D. They really helped.

    1. Thank you. I'm glad you and your son are feeling better. It's great to have these things on hand too. I didn't have to leave the house this weekend because I had what I needed. I love that.

  12. I take a lot of homeopathic treatments/prevention with a grain of salt. That said, all of us here were laid up with a dreadful case of strep throat. Mine came with a side order of conjunctivitis, DH's turned to a sinus infection, requiring another trop to the doctor, and a switch to a different prescription. The ONLY kid who didn't get sick was eldest DS, who has, for the past 8 months or so, taken to drinking a kombucha daily. Anecdotal, yes, but it did live me pondering...Get better soon.

    1. Thank you, Meg. Very interesting that your son didn't get sick and had been drinking the kombucha. I will have to look into that too. I've not had a cold in at least 3 years, so I'm happy for that. Trying to look on the bright side. :)
