One of the students brought me this sunflower today. Isn't it beautiful?
This week we picked up Lawry's Sesame Ginger marinade ($1.04) and Gulden's Spicy Brown mustard (64¢) at Target on markdown.
We picked up these four packages of fruity applesauce for free using the Freeosk app at Walmart.
This weekend is the Dollar General store 50% off clearance items sale. The items can be a great money saving deal, and if you have coupons, you can save even more. My daughter went today and came home with some great items and some of those were money makers.
This week I was able to work four days for which I am grateful. Even though I was very tired at the end of the day I still came home and cooked dinner. No eating out for us this week and that includes lunches for me as I brought mine every day.
Speaking of being tired, my first week (last week) must have worn me out as I slept for fifteen hours Saturday night. LOL
One of the classes I subbed for this week was a high school class. The teacher in this classroom writes on her board in cursive. But these students were part of the group who were not taught cursive handwriting in public school. I read part of the assignment to several students as they couldn't read cursive handwriting.

There were a number of years here where they didn’t teach cursive although they have started back again. There is a whole section of kids who were left out and don’t know it.

ReplyDeleteNot teaching cursive is going to give parents of teens some incredible power. Imagine being able to pass indecipherable notes back and forth among the parents.
I was shopping one day and a teenage girl asked me to translate her Mom's cursive writing. She could not read the grocery list.

ReplyDeleteI too took homemade lunches to work. I did have a restaurant lunch on Friday, but it was a treat from a colleague, and she saved money by using a coupon. 😊

DeleteHi, Belinda. What a sweet gift from your student. As a teacher, I was floored when cursive stopped being taught in the lower grades. The argument was that you only needed it for a signature. Dumb, is all I can say. I know young adults who were victimized by that thinking who cannot not "sign" their names to save their lives---they print a "signature."

ReplyDeleteRecently, one of my paper crafting forums, we were discussing a lady who charges an exorbitant amount of money to teach hand lettering. She is even doing a cruise to teach hand lettering. The problem with this? She is teaching cursive!!!!
I was telling the girls to learn cursive pay a retired grade school teacher. Watch YouTube videos, look for old instruction books on Ebay.
The Europeans on this group were shocked that in American schools cursive is not taught. In Europe they are still teaching it in schools with that dying art form called life skills classes too, lol. In some of the college courses they have to take their exams in cursive.
I am glad to see cursive is making a comeback in schools. How are kids going to read historical documents? I guess they will be a specialty degree and earn a ton of money. ;)
