Frugal Friday ~ June 1, 2018

The last day I subbed one of the teachers gave me a box of golf pencils to have for students to use. I thought this was a great frugal tool.

Students ask for pencils regularly and then either don't return them, lose them, or break them. Golf pencils are inexpensive compared to regular pencils, so I thought this was a great frugal alternative.

Frugal things we did this week include:

Took our aluminum cans to be recycled this week and received $3.00.

The bad news of the week is the blue car we haul garbage in has died. Repairs would cost $1,000 and it's not worth fixing at that price.

Happy to report though that someone has FINALLY started a garbage service here and Friday May 25th was their first day. The cost is only $28 per month and we are thrilled!

We combined errands when we went out on Friday.

We stayed home five days this week, which is terrific for us. A tank of gas usually only lasts one week when I'm working, but will last quite a while now that we are staying home.

In my sewing center I worked on finishing up some of the Dish Towel Doll Dresses I made and I listed those in my Etsy shop. I also worked on making some crayon rolls for my shop.

One day while I was reading this week someone mentioned Leanne Brown's website and that she had a free PDF file there about eating well on $4 per day. I checked it out and it is 89 pages, so if you're interested, here is a link

Our friend had a donation pile for Goodwill in her garage and told us to go through it when we were there.

Bailey pulled out one of those jewelry dressers and listed it on the Facebook marketplace and sold it for $50 this week. She also sold  computer monitor we were no longer using for $20. Cha-ching!

It's been an peaceful week here, how about in your home? Anything frugal you'd like to share? We would love to hear about it in the comment section.

  1. I didn't know you had to haul your garbage. It's nice to have garbage pick up isn't it? We have twice a week pick up for regular trash and once a week for recyclables. The fee is included in the property taxes.

    1. We have hauled our garbage for 32 years, Nil. We did have garbage service when I was growing up in Illinois, but that was years ago. It has been wonderful to have garbage service and it’s only the second week. LOL

How nice that you have that AND recyclables. That is great!

  2. Because we are trying to cut down on waste in general, we don't fill a garbage can in a week-could get by with only two pick-ups a month, but not an option. while it is convenient, I hate paying for a service I really don't need as frequent as required to pay for.

    1. I wouldn’t like that either, Sam. But, kudos to you for cutting down on your waste. That is so important in this day and age. My daughter learned a lot about the topic in her Environmental Science class this semester and she has taken steps to be more green. It’s definitely a good thing.

  3. Sorry about the car - but great on the trash pick-up. It would take a lot of $28 to add up to $1,000. Maybe you can salvage the vehicle for scrap and make a little extra.
Love those quiet kind of weeks.
    Good going on the sales.
    Have a good weekend!

    1. That is what my BIL said to do, Cheryl. Salvage the car for scrap and get a couple of hundred dollars out of it. I hope you have a great weekend too. :)

  4. The golf pencil thing is a great idea. I am going to pass it on to all my friends who are still teaching.

  5. You have gained while losing a vehicle, which is frugality. I can't maintain vehicle's needs for $336 annually. Plus, you have trash pick-up.

Bailey's yard sale gains are something to write home about. :)
