Cupid strikes gold for Chattanooga area merchants
According to the article, "Across the U.S., the average man will dish out about $175 for Valentine's Day, while the average woman will spend around $90, according to the National Retail Federation" and that $18.6 billion is the total that will be spent on Valentine's Day in the United States this year.
I cannot imagine spending $90 on anyone for Valentine's Day.
Today I subbed in middle school and by the end of the day, many students had received Valentine's gifts including cards, balloons, stuffed animals, and candy. My daughter did not receive anything today and she is none the worse for it. She was grateful not to have to carry anything home.

Boy am I cheap! Haha! Unbelievable in this economy.. or any other. Angela
ReplyDeleteTrue, Angela, true.
DeleteWow, I just cooked hubbies favorite meal with the most expensive thing being the strawberries. (Which I bought from Aldi might I add...lol) Nowhere near $90.
ReplyDeleteHubby picks daughter up a stuffed animal and chocolates every year. We watch the sales and keep an eye out for her favorite candy...this is the only time of year she gets it so it truly is a treat. On the other hand he and I won't exchange gifts.
I did something similar for my daughter when she was younger, Shara. I think it makes them feel special at that young age. Now that my daughter is in high school, not so much. lol
DeleteYour dinner you are making for your husband sounds special. I hope he enjoys it! The strawberries would be so good at this time of year.
I just do small, practical gifts for Valentine's Day. My daughters got new pj bottoms (their old ones were looking like capris!), that I sewed, and I gave my son and husband dollar store mugs for their offices filled with packets of cocoa, cider, oatmeal and tea, plus some red and silver wrapped chocolate candy from after Christmas sales. Not even in the ballpark of $90!
ReplyDeleteI don't feel like I need to spend a lot of money for my family to know that I love them. I can find all sorts of free ways to tell them that.
Awwww...what nice gifts you made for your family, Lili! :) Very, very thoughtful indeed and like you say, "I don't feel like I need to spend a lot of money for my family to know that I love them". :)
DeleteMy dd is getting a pair of sandals and some Hersey's kisses and her boyfriend is getting a new baseball cap and some peanut butter cups.
ReplyDeleteDh got a gift card. He got me flowers.
My dd's boyfriend's mother skips every occasion and I mean his birthday, Christmas, etc. so I like to buy him something so he realizes he's loved.
Valentine's Day isn't a big deal here, but we do get each other gifts. In fact, dd and her boyfriend are coming today to do Valentine's gifts. We didn't even have time yesterday.
Sounds very nice, Mary Lou. It is so important to let those we love know we love them. :)
