No Yard Sale Saturday ~ Conserving Gas
I decided not to go to any yard sales today for several reasons. Number one because it's cold here and I've been out of the house multiple days this week and I just wanted to stay home.
Number two is because the price of gas has me concerned.
Gasoline prices have risen since late February 2026 when the United States launched a coordinated strike on the country of Iran.
As consumers, I'm afraid we are going to feel the pain of this in our wallets. Higher expenses and shortages will affect many of us and may be hard to maneuver if you are not wealthy.
This is not to alarm anyone or create panic, but rather to remind us that we live in a time where we need to be prepared for things like this. It isn't wise to live completely dependent on everything being there for us when we want it or need it.
If we focus on our skills we can rest a little easier, hopefully. There is no credit card for this, there is no one coming to save us. We must learn the skills and know how to take care of ourselves.
With the price of gas climbing as much as it has in the last week I can see a real need for people to start rationing the gas they do buy.
I filled up my tank on Friday before coming home and it cost me $47, which if I had to do that several times each month, would definitely put a dent in my budget.
So in my effort to save the gas I do have, I decided to stay home from yard sales this week.
This is not to say that I won't be yard sailing this summer, but Bailey and I will probably take turns driving each week when we do go, which would cut our individual gas budgets in half for the month. Either way, we will reach into our frugal toolbox and find a way to make this work for us too.

Ouch on the cost of gas to fill up your car. Last I checked, gas around here is $3.29/gallon so it went up .60 in a week. I think many people are going to be hurting since higher gas prices will mean higher transportation costs and price increases in everything. Anyway I am trying to make my trips as cost effective as possible. I went to Kroger yesterday for the sale on corned beef etc. Food Lion is close by, so I stopped there for chicken on sale for .99/lb and then to Food City for pork loin for 1.49/lb so at least we are stocked up on meat for a while. I was behind a little old lady checking out, who was counting out her dollar bills to pay for her groceries, but she was short of money, so I paid the rest. So many hurting people... :(
ReplyDeleteAwwww...that was so sweet of you to help the elderly lady, Kathy. I'm sure she appreciated that! Combining errands is a great way to save on gas money during these tough times. You did good stocking up on groceries this week.
DeleteI know that I will be walking more for things like our prescriptions and banking as those are relatively close to me. The exercise will be good as well. Really considering the folding wagon for groceries, but Harvey says "No", very vehemently. We shall see who wins. Until that time I will be working on combining errands to save on fuel as usual.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
All of that sounds like a great plan, Jackie. I would walk places if we lived in walking distance too. I think a wagon would help tremendously. I hope you can get Harvey onboard with the idea.
DeleteSibylle has left a new comment on your post "No Yard Sale Saturday This Week":
ReplyDeleteFuel prices are very high here too. Diesel costs over €2.20 per liter ($9.51 per gallon). We try to drive as little as possible and hope we won't have to fill up often in the future. The government has released some of the oil reserves to stabilize prices. Time will tell if that helps. Food prices are threatening to rise even further. It's just unbelievable. Having a food supply as a buffer is really helpful.
Oh my goodness Sibylle, your fuel prices are very high! Hopefully releasing some of the oil reserves will help stabilize the price. I hope we will all see some relief soon. You’re correct having a food supply is a good buffer to have.

We've been driving the electric car a lot, and trading off for whomever will be doing the most driving. That said, Nick drives a lot when he's home (drove to the beach yesterday, then to UC Davis to go meet friends from school). I want him to have a wonderful spring break, and he's certainly not going on any of your traditional college spring break trips, but the gas alone is going to be quite pricey! - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteOh, that is a terrific idea to use the electric car more. Do you find that it is cheaper to run than your gasoline driven cars? Yes, I can understand how the gas will be pricey for Nick with spring break going on right now. Hopefully the price will come down soon.
DeleteDear Belinda, the gas prices have skyrocketed everywhere. I walk to places that are close by and I use Montreal buses and metro. I am glad I don't drive.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you're able to walk most places, Linda. That would definitely save money. Yes, it seems everyone is dealing with higher gas prices these days, unfortunately.
DeleteI know you aren't the only one feeling the need to pull those purse strings tighter. We had to go help my niece today and batched some errands while we were out. We were able to make loop from her house back to ours and make a few stops without going out of our way.
ReplyDeleteOh, that’s a good way to run errands, Wendi.
