First Frugal Friday of November 2023

Welcome to Frugal Friday!

My Frugal Week

I called my Insurance company and switched my auto policy to be paid every month rather than every three months, which is a savings of $23.96 every year.

We only stayed home on Saturday and Tuesday this week. I had four appointments this week and I'm also taking my Dad for a medical scan on Friday, so it's been a busy week of running around.

I perused the grocery store sale ads on Tuesday. Piggy Wiggly has Wampler's sausage of sale for $2.99, which is a good price as of lately.

On Sunday I used a flea comb on my cats to remove fleas rather than spend money on chemical solutions.

We did not eat out this week and ate all meals at home.

Freebies

From one of our no spend groups, I received two big bottles of shampoo/conditioner, canned potatoes, black eyed peas, great northern beans, petite diced tomatoes, kidney beans, green beans, and mustard greens.

Savings of the Week

I scored at Walmart on Wednesday. They had Betty Crocker pizza crust mixes for 50 cents each. When I scanned my receipt into Fetch I earned an additional 400 points for them. They also had 32 ounce boxes of chicken brother marked down to $1.00, so I bought the low-sodium ones for our Thanksgiving dressing. They also had sodium free ones to choose from.

I also bought a bottle of mouthwash last week on markdown for $2.00.

Question of the Week

This was posted to one of the frugal groups online:
Kroger/Kroger owned stores have eggs on sale. Most are $1.49, but Dillon's in Kansas are $0.99 each. Clip the digital coupon from Dillon's to use at your Kroger.

So, my question is this, would you do this in order to save money? Seems to me that it would be a real bother to switch zip codes in the app in order to get this to work. I’m doing good if I can get the digital coupons in my own zip code to work. Ha! Ha!

What do you think?

Avoiding Spending

We did not avoid spending this week as we both bought gas and I also bought groceries and markdowns. Only essential spending though such as markdowns we will use and groceries we needed. No eating out or impulse shopping done.

I hope you've had a good week it's been really cold here this week and was 24 degrees yesterday morning. I have all my big blankets on my bed to keep warm at night. I hope you're doing well and stay safe.

Thank you for dropping by my frugal blog, you are always welcome here.

We would love to hear all about your week in the comment section.

  1. A great week for saving! I'm going to look for the pizza crust mix today.
We used to switch zip codes all the time to print coupons. I would totally do it to save money. Didn't take long.

    1. Oh, that is good to know about switching zip codes, Vickie. Thank you! I hope you can find the pizza crusts too.

  3. I would probably not switch zip codes for a coupon , but that is just me.
You had some nice savings. I love no spend weeks (except for necessities)

    1. I'm with you on the zip code change, Anne. I don't think I would do it either. Maybe if it were for a million dollars I would. LOL

  4. Sounds like a pretty good week for you and busy! Our Kroger add had the eggs at that price for 18 count. I doubt I would switch around - my time is worth money too IMO - not for a few cents anyway!!
Have a nice weekend. It has warmed a bit today and this weekend. Windy - but getting yard work done none the less~!

    1. Thank you, Cheryl. I agree on the time is worth money too mantra. You stay busy in your yard, I'm sure it's one of the nicest ones on your street. I hope you are having a very good weekend .

  5. We got our bills for insurance renewal and just said no. They were way up so we called our insurance broker and she found us auto insurance for half and saved us $1000 on our homeowners insurance. That's a lot of money!

    1. Wow Lana, that is a lot of money! Good for you to saying no! I would have done the same thing.

  6. Hope your appointments went well, and I hope your Dad gets along ok with his scan.
Nice freebies and Walmart finds, and I'm glad you were able to save money on insurance.
I haven't changed my zip code for coupons, although sometimes my local Kroger is out of the weekly deals, so I try going to the store 6 miles away instead, but it is the same coupon
Hope you have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you, Kathy, I appreciate your good thoughts for me. The appointments for me all went well, so I am very happy. Oh, that is a good idea about going to the other Kroger. There are 2 in the town where we shop Kroger and I should go to both for the markdowns, but I don’t. I would definitely go if they were out of the weekly deals though as some of those are very good. I hope you’re having a great weekend

  7. I'm surprised you can save money by paying monthly for your insurance. My experience has always been it costs more that way because they charge a fee for every payment. Saving money for more frequent payments is really interesting to me. I'd love to know the rationale. ;-) As for the coupon switching, seems like a lot of trouble to save .50. I wouldn't bother. Hope your Dad's scan went well and wishing you a good weekend!

    1. I was just telling Jackie the same about the insurance. It used to be that the savings were better when you paid for either three or six months, so I’m not sure what changed. I would love to know the rationale behind that too. I’m with you, switching zip codes for savings would be inconvenient to me, but if others find it works for them, that’s great. I hope you are also having a good weekend. 😊

  8. You did very well. I am hoping for some great savings when I go shopping early next week. If we paid our auto insurance monthly we would pay way more by the end of the year and more than paying every 6 months. Just shows the difference between countries.

    God bless.

    1. Thank you, Jackie. Our insurance used to be that way too. It was cheaper to pay every three of six months, so I’m not sure what changed, but I’ll take the savings. Maybe it’s because I am getting older? I’m not sure. I hope you are having a good weekend.

  9. We pay our insurance yearly, as there is a nice savings discount to do so. Because we have four drivers (including two teens!), ours is very pricey, so every bit of savings helps. I also pay via our credit card for no additional fee, which at least generates travel rewards or cash back.

Sounds like you had some good wins this week.

    1. Thank you, travel rewards and cash bag are big incentives! Discounts are the best, aren't they?

  10. (Little Penpen) it finally turned cold in eastern NC too. We turn the thermostat back at night and use extra blankets. Our granddaughter made her first pizza using the pizza dough mix this week. She was so proud. I have a flea phobia, as we had an infestation this summer. All the pets take flea treatment now. I hope everyone’s appts went well this week.

    1. Thank you so much, Penny. Yes, we take care of any fleas because we do not want an infestation. How neat about your granddaughter's pizza making skills. She should be proud! All good reports from the drs I am happy to say, thank you.

  11. Hi Belinda! Well, I guess this post reminds me I SHOULD be clipping any coupon I can find. I get lazy, but that's not a frugal quality lol!

    1. I know what you mean, Rain. I sometimes put them in my wallet and then forget them when I go to pay, which isn’t frugal. That is my guilty admission of the day. 😂
