Third Frugal Friday of September 2023

Welcome to Frugal Friday!

My Frugal Week

We had a bad experience with a “pro” from Angi’s List last Tuesday. I ended up filing a police report for theft and will have to file a claim to be reimbursed for the losses.

To make a long story short, the person who does our garbage on Saturday was able to get our new air conditioner up and running for us and we are so grateful.

That is the second time this summer I’ve gotten the run around from a “pro” on Angi, so we won’t be using them in the future.

Tasks completed this week include washing my laundry, folding all the household laundry, steaming for Bailey, cleaning off the back porch, garbage, and weeding.

I went to the eye doctor on Monday. I didn’t need an injection in my right eye, but he is going to keep watching it. The swelling in my left eye was much worse, so he is going to try a new medicine in four weeks and see if that helps.

I went to the orthopedic doctor on Wednesday and received the final shot of a series of three in both knees. So far I don’t feel like it is working as well as the cortisone shots, but time will tell.

Our electric bill this month is $192.49, which is down $53.74 from last month. I’ll take the savings and look forward to an even smaller bill next month.

It was a quiet week here with no spending, which is always a good thing. How are things were you are located?

Thank you for dropping by my frugal blog, you are always welcome here.

We would love to hear all about your week in the comment section.

  1. (Little Penpen) what a bummer on the angi professional. Does Angi still guarantee their services? I hope you have a restful weekend and feel better!

    1. Angi really dropped the ball on this one I feel like, but I still have to file a claim with them for the items that were stolen.

    2. (Little Penpen) that’s so sad

  2. Sounds like a rough week. I'm so sorry. Glad that you have a good person to put in the air conditioner. Seems like so many contractors don't get back to you anymore, but I've never had one steal from us before, how scary.
I hope that your knees will feel better, and I'm sorry that the injections haven't helped your eye. I hope the new meds will work better.
Hope that you have a better weekend.

    1. Thank you, Kathy. I think this “pro” was even using a burner phone as it was no longer working two days later. Very scary if I stop and think about it.

Thanks for the good wishes. I hope you have a great weekend! 😊

  3. Angi's List is not at all up to par as to what it used to be. I quit using around here several years back.
Hope you knees get to feeling better.

    1. Thank you. 😊

Yes, we heard similar things about Angi’s List afterwards. We won’t be using them again either as clearly they do not do background checks on their pros.

  4. Our company gets numerous calls from angis list every week trying to sell us their service so they will put our company's name on their pro list. NO THANK YOU. They do not verify if anyone going into your home is convicted of a violent felon, they do not verify business or state licensing, fed tax I'd # or if they carry the state mandated minimum for liability and workmans compensation insurance. It's an advertising service pretending to be a service provider. Ask family and friends or your LOCAL insurance agent. In 36 years we have never advertised other than word of mouth..

    1. Yikes! Thank you for letting me know this, which I suspected a little bit, but not this much. I will never use them again after what we experienced this past week. Thank you again for the valuable information.

  5. I heard that Angi's List changed hands at one point...maybe I'm wrong but that might be the problem.
I'm glad your eye wasn't too bad and I hope that the other gets better with new meds.

    1. Thank you, Vickie. I did not know Angi’s List had changed hands, that may lead to their downfall. Thank you for the well wishes too. 😊

  6. Belinda, I'm sorry sorry you had such a crummy week. I hope your eyes and knees feel better soon.
How disappointing that Angies List didn't screen that guy, he definitely didn't act professional.
The weather was cooler this week and we even got a little rain. It has been so nice. The a/c got a break and hopefully the electric bill too.
My apple trees were attacked twice by the neighbors goats but I did get three bucketfuls. It was a death defying act getting them out of the tops of the trees with the pole apple grabber while walking among the fallen apples swarming with wasps. I was happy not to get a single wasp sting! Don't laugh my sister gave me this tip - immediately after a wasp sting - spray it with jock itch spray. It really helps!
I am making apple butter to freeze and freezing some chopped apple for cakes.
Belinda I hope you have a good weekend and I hope next week is much better. Sky

    1. Thank you so much, Sky. I was really shocked when I realized that Angi sent someone like that here into my home. Never again!

Oh, I’m so glad you all got some relief and were able to turn off your ac. And rain too, wonderful! We could use some rain right now.

I didn’t know that about bee stings and jock itch spray. LOL 😂 I wonder who first figured that out, probably someone who was desperate. 😝

I’m glad you were able to get the apples and apple butter sounds delicious. It’s getting to be that time of year, my favorite season.

I hope you have a great weekend too!

  7. Oh my, so sorry to hear about Angi. They have a lousy rep in my area so I've never used them. I do use Thumbtack. If you have it in your area, check it out. The guy we hired did a great job and even came back free when a slight issue came up that was not his fault. He had great reviews and we were more than satisfied. He told me Angi took such a huge cut that he had to charge ridiculous prices just to make a living wage. He says Thumbtack just charges him referral fees.

    1. Thank you, Bobi. Thumbtack sounds really good for you. I’m glad he worked out really well for you. That was my experience the first time we used Angi’s List. I had three members on Anfi ghost me and his saying that about the ridiculous prices makes so much sense now. My dad always said hindsight is 20/20. Thank you for your input.

  8. That is terrible. I will only use people that have been recommended to me by others, I am so afraid of being taken advantage of and I never let people know I am alone. I would certainly let Angie's list know.

    1. We definitely let them know, Kim. I picked up a copy of the police report too and added it to my claim for reimbursement of stolen and broken property. You are smart to not let anyone know you are alone.

Congrats on having a no spend week!!

    God bless.

  10. Oh no! I'm sorry this happened to you Belinda. I think it's best to file a police report for your own safety too. I hope you & Bailey have a wonderful weekend!

  11. Angie's List was bought by Home Advisor a few years ago. It now goes by just Angi, no longer uses the list name. It has really gone downhill since. I won't use it now. How scary that the person stole from you.

    1. Thank you, Celie. We were so shocked that they would take a picture off the wall and just take it. I still find it so unbelievable.

  12. I'm so sorry that an evil person gained access to your home.
Thank God that all he did was steal things. It could have had worse outcome.
Angie's list dropped the ball. You've been through enough with health issues lately.
You didn't need this to happen.
It's been a rough and expensive
    Few weeks for me.
The hurricane ripped through and we were without power for several days.
Then our heat pump/AC went out so another week of no AC in the brutal heat.
Three times the repair man worked on it and had to order parts.
On the bright side the 800 dollar part was under warranty still!
We had to leave our home and flee the hurricane. So much damage everywhere.
Then our truck broke down and needed a thousand dollars worth of repairs.
I had to buy myself another car as mine died. Being a very frugal person
    this has been very rough.
    But we survived it all.

    1. Thank you. I’m sorry it’s been a rough and expensive few weeks for you. Going without power that long in the heat is brutal! I’m so sorry that happened to you. I’m glad the heat pump/ac part was still under warranty though, that is very good news in the middle of such devastation. And then to have car troubles on top of all of that. Bless your hearts, you all need a break. Sending good thoughts your way. I’m so glad you surfeit all.
