Third Frugal Friday of August 2022

Welcome to Friday!

My Frugal Week

Thanks to Vickie over at Vickie’s Kitchen and Garden, I won a three month membership to PureFlix, which is a streaming service that has faith-filled and family-friendly movies and shows. Woo Hoo, I’m so excited!

We had company from Florida come to see us on Sunday. We had originally planned to go out to eat with them and other family members,  but they requested sandwiches for a quick and easy lunch instead.

So, I bought some Cracker Barrel chicken for sandwiches from the deli, had sliced tomatoes, cheese, lettuce, pickles and red onions. I also served it with cantaloupe and potato chips for those who wanted that. It was a bit of a splurge, but we’ve not seen them since before Covid, so it was well worth it.

We had a nice visit and then they were off to the John C. Campbell folk school for a week of classes.

We are preparing to get our driveway worked on very soon. Our driveway takes a lot of maintenance to keep it drivable. It is one-eighth of a mile long and has at least two hills, and the rain will wash it out rather easily. We are getting bids this week and might know something by next week.

Saving Money In My Frugal Kitchen

One thing I made this week was a cucumber salad. I made some Italian dressing and sliced and added the cucumbers and was going to serve it with dinner that night. Then I thought about and added a chopped red onion, which led to the addition of chickpeas and tomatoes. Turned out to be a good and refreshing salad when it was done.

We picked up slider buns when we went to the bread outlet last week. I turned those into ham and cheese sliders one day for lunch. Bailey recently had loose meat sandwiches at the library book club made with slider buns and says we need to recreate those at home.

There was no grocery shopping this week and all meals were eaten at home. Dishes washed up every evening to keep the whole thing in motion. LOL 😂

I feel like I’ve made a dozen gallons of tea this week. I know I’ve made a gallon of each (sweet & unsweet) about every day this week, so that is pretty close to one dozen.

Meals This Week

Friday:  Friday Night Pizza

Saturday: Dirty Rice, Corn on the Cob.

Sunday: Plenty of sandwich stuff and pizza, so no need to cook.

Monday: Meatloaf, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Green Beans with Onions.

Tuesday: Movie Night Pizza

Wednesday: Chicken Fajitas, Mashed Potatoes, Mixed Vegetables.

Thursday: Better Cheddars, Mac & Cheese, Green Beans with Onions, Cucumber Salad.

What I've been Reading This Week

My doctor recommended that I read the book, Mastering Diabetes, written by Cyrus Khambatta and Robby Barbaro. So, I bought it from Amazon and just started reading it this week. It’s another plant based approach to the disease similar to Dr. Fuhrman’s book, The End of Diabetes

Thank you dropping by my blog, you are always welcome here. I enjoy interacting with you in the comment section. We would love to hear about your week and see what you’ve been up to recently.

  1. Congrats on the win! Nice that you got to see folks from so far away and had a nice visit and lunch.
    Good luck with the drive!
    Have a great weekend.

  2. That's a VERY long driveway. They tend to be pretty short, if there is one at all, in the UK. xx

    1. Yes, we live in a rural country side with 15 acres, so it’s quite a drive up to the house.

  3. Those are my kind of favorite dinners when visiting loved ones are sandwiches & chips. I want to visit and not have them cook.
Doing a hard decluttering of my home. Hubby & I are saying do we really want to haul this across country. The answer to most things are no. Saving lots of money. I never realized how much it was costing us to maintain all of these things, even though we used them. Should have known better, lol. It's been a couple of hard years. ;)
Eating dinners from our freezer to clear it out.
The biggest win this week- Even though we are moving I am doing the Fall/Winter stock up. We know we will be here partially for those months. This is the first year since Covid I did not have to buy Covid supplies! Yeah!
I only have to buy condiments we eat regularly, green beans & peanut butter.

    1. That sounds like a good plan, Safyne. It is a lot of work to declutter a house for a move, but you’ll eventually get there. It is so great not to have to buy Covid supplies. We are using up the last of the wipes we bought.

  4. Congratulations on winning the PureFlix subscription!
So glad you had a good visit with company, and those sandwiches sound delicious. I love those ham and swiss cheese sliders too with the melted butter and poppy seeds.
I hope the bids on your driveway won't be too bad, but those things always cost more than I think they should.
Hope you have a great weekend.

  5. Hey great job on the win. I like your idea of tomatoes, cucumbers and chickpeas with Italian dressing I am going to try that for hubs. He will love it and we have a lot of those ingredients. Hubs lost 45 lbs and he was pre diabetic and is fine now. But it is hard for him to keep it off poor guy.

    1. Thank you, Kim. Kudos to your dh for losing 45 pounds. I know how hard it is to keep off. I hope he enjoys the salad.

  6. I can’t sign in to comment today for some reason, but this is Little Penpen. When we lived in western NC we lived up a long road that required maintenance, too. Thankfully we had two neighbors that shared in the expense. But I feel for you, as it was a never ending job. The book about diabetes sounds interesting. Is it mostly keto?

    1. Oh, that would be nice to share the expense with someone else. It is a never ending job for sure. The Mastering Diabetes book is not Keto, but plant based. He does talk about following a Keto like diet when he was first diagnosed though.

  8. I hope Mastering Diabetes is helpful for you. I went WFPB 4 years ago and it was the best thing I could of done, I don't have any diabetic symptoms, but I lost a lot of weight and my bp dropped 20 points on each reading. I did it to reduce my risk of heart disease and cancer. Bonus, I'm pretty cheap to feed! :)

  10. I understand about maintaining the long driveway. Our last house was 14 acres and our driveway was half a km long (so I guess about a third of a mile?). The year before we left we spent thousands of dollars building it up so it didn't wash away with every rain storm. At least you don't have to worry about clearing the snow - that was our biggest challenge!

    1. Yes, it costs thousands of dollars to keep up a driveway like that, Christy. You’re right about the snow too, that would be rough and much worse. (Growing up near Chicago I have snow removal stories 😂) My Dad has a tractor to keep up within it in between, but this times it needs the gravel and some backhoe work.

  11. How lovely to win that prize. I do hope that the driveway costs are not too high. We, or at least I am, trying to do a bit more plant based cooking. Not only will it be healthier for us, it should also save us a bit of cash when purchasing groceries.

    God bless.
