Frugal Friday

Welcome to Saturday!   It's chilly and snowy here today. I tried to post here yesterday, but our Internet wasn't working for some reason. I'm going to keep this blog post short and sweet just in case it decides to stop working again.

My stimulus check arrived last week and I put it to good use paying for six months worth of auto insurance, renewing my local newspaper for one year even though it wasn't due until March, and stocking up on necessities while also saving a little bit.

Bailey used part of her stimulus money to buy inventory for her shop. She will probably triple or quadruple her money by doing this. We've been busy this week steaming the new inventory, photographing, processing and listing the items for sale online.

Saving Money In My Frugal Kitchen

Since the weather has turned cold this week it's a good time to make soup, which really helps us to save money. Today 'll be making homemade vegetable soup using up items from my pantry. Tomorrow night we will be having Chili for dinner from some I froze the last time I made it.

We did a Publix grocery store pickup since I needed to go there to pick up a prescription anyway. It was our first time doing a grocery pick up there and I only ordered a few things, but it went smoothly and I would definitely use the service again.

Cornbread dressing made from scratch was on the menu this week also. I served it with dinner a few times and then froze the rest of it to have with a turkey breast we have in the freezer later this month.

The celery leaves are drying on a plate in the kitchen sunshine to be used in another dish later.

Saving on Entertainment

For family movie night this week we watched Sweet Home Alabama. It is one of our favorite movies, which we have watched multiple times. We definitely got our money's worth when we bought this movie.

What I've been Reading This Week

One of the gifts that Bailey bought me for Christmas was a six month subscription to Scribd. I've been reading so much more than usual as they offer so many books.

I read on my laptop and cellphone and Scribd will keep my place no matter which device I'm using, which I like.

If you would like to try Scribd out for 60 days for free, click here: Scribd.

Freebies

We received a free sample from The Republic of Tea. This is the time of year to warm up with a hot cup of herbal tea. I had my usual Matcha green tea today.

How was your week? Any frugal wins to tell us about?

  1. Great work getting ahead with bills with your stimulus money.

I found ground beef for $1.50/lb & bought the limit of 15 lbs for the freezer. That will definitely save us money, as we normally pay $3.99 here.

Otherwise, all of the normal stuff - listing & selling things on eBay, chasing money we're owed, filing expense requests for health insurance, etc.

I'm obsessed with a tea (I like fruity herbal teas) that's called Tahitian Breeze (Bigelow). I usually drink a lemon or lemon ginger in the morning, followed by the Tahitian Breeze. I drink tea all day long during the cooler weather!

    1. What a great deal on the hamburger! I would have stocked up on that too. I love drinking herbal teas as they are so good for you.

  2. Good use by both of you with your stimulus. My son received his and of course, it will go to living expenses. I am not sure if my daughter got hers. I was really annoyed at someone who rails against "lazy people" that could be working instead of collecting unemployment because there's jobs "every where", complaining that their income was too high to get a stimulus check. They are a childless couple by choice and she does not work, so you can imagine her lifestyle, and she is complaining that theya re not getting $1200 because she feels like their lifestyle has been impacted. Ugggh!

    1. Ugh! Some people take the cake. She sounds annoying.

Sounds like your son used his stimulus check responsibly too. That is terrific.

  3. You did great in the frugal department as always! I've been making a big pot of soup every week and having that for lunches. It's healthy and definitely a great way to stretch the dollars. We've had nice cool weather all month so no running the air conditioner which is a huge savings, cuts my electric by at least $100 a month. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

    1. Thank you, Martha. Yes, soup is a great way to save money. Yu can add all sorts of things in there.

Saving $100 on your electric is great! I love this time of year for those savings.

      Enjoy you weekend too.

  4. You've both put your checks to good use.

I'm playing catch up with decluttering and doing freezer cooking. I've always wanted to watch Sweet Home Alabama, but never got around to it. I'm gonna try to watch it soon.

  7. I have been making garbage soup weekly, (everything leftover in a pot of broth) which becomes my lunch. It is not fabulous and certainly not what I want all the time, but I eat it anyway because it is there.

    1. Same here, Anne. It might not be what I want to eat, but at least it's ready to eat.

  8. I baked six huge chicken breasts that are for lunch and dinners. I love it. Now, I made potato soup that is not as good as I hoped. Carrots have been added. This is going to be lunch until it is gone.

  9. GMTA. :) I put some of my stimulus check for stocking up. I also used it for home improvements that will save money in the long run.
Love what Bailey did with her check. I have been buying from resellers on Ebay, lately.

  12. So glad to see your post! Sounds like you have been busy. Great use of the stimulus. Will be nice to have that bill paid for 6 months. I'm sure that Bailey will get a great return on her investment. Hope you have a great week.
