Blustery, cold fall days make a hot bowl of soup very appealing. It’s great comfort food and easy to fill with healthy ingredients. Serving a bowl or cup of soup along with your choice of bread or sandwich several times per month really helps to stretch your grocery budget.
When money’s tight, adding one or two of these recipes to your meal plan each month will help save money on your grocery bill. When you take the time to make soup yourself you will definitely be saving money. Chili, beef stew (slow cooker with leftover Sunday roast beef), apple cabbage soup, chicken tortilla soup, and the good old "It's-approaching-5p.m.-and-I-don't-know-what-to-fix" tuna cheddar chowder from "The Tightwad Gazette." Personally, I don't like soup very much at all, (not sure why) but these I can enjoy.
I call it pasta fagiole but its just a basic use it up kind of soup with beans a pasta as stretchers. Wild rice is our favorite, but with a ham bone, bean and ham is the best.
Those all sound good too, Sam. I've made the pasta fagioli before and enjoyed it. My Dad always likes wild rice in the dressing for Thanksgiving. I enjoy wild rice as a side dish too. Any soup with beans and ham is going to be good too. :)
My grandmother was a good cook like your mother, Lisa. She worked tirelessly in her kitchen while working full time at Pepperidge Farm and loved every minute she spent in her kitchen.

When my husband does any meat on the smoker, I save the bones and make a lovely smoky stock and add while beans, kale or collards, carrots, and onions. This is great on it's own or with the addition of smoked sausage, pulled pork, or chicken. Serve with crusty bread.
French Onion, Broccoli/Cauliflower Cheese, Wild Rice Chicken and Mushroom are my favs.
