Frugal Friday

The weather has been unseasonably warm and rainy here this week. Almost in the 70s and humid, but thanks to the cloud cover it did not get any warmer than that.

The rain has caused it to be so humid that we tried sleeping with fans, but eventually turned on the a/c two nights this week just so we could sleep. I wish it would get a little bit cooler.

My cousin sent me three pocket knives this week and told me to sell them on Ebay and keep the money. I thought that was very nice of him. I'm going to use the proceeds to pay toward my auto insurance this month rather than pull the money from savings.

Thursday was the first day back to school and normally I don't get called to sub on the first day back from a break. But due to an emergency I subbed on Thursday and Friday.

This week I received a free tea bag sample from The Republic of Tea along with their catalog. I'm not sure how often they send those, but it seems to be around every three months.

We also received a nice freebie from Oil of Olay with three samples to try.

We also received the last of our free bagels from Panera Bread this week. I just read that someone got free bagels in January. So, if you didn't get this freebie in December check your account to see if you have it now.

Other than working two days, I stayed home this week. Staying home, combining errands when we to go to town, and packing lunches and drinks were included in the frugal things we did this week.

I calculated the cost of the sandwich I took to work today at 81¢. It was roast chicken, cheddar cheese, and mayo on whole wheat bread. 81¢ is definitely cheaper than buying a sandwich anywhere else.

It's the little things that add up over time and lead to big savings. I hope you've had a good and frugal week and that you have a great weekend too.  :)

  2. Nice week for you. I don't generally get free things, but have only spent 20 dollars this year and only spent that because I was out of olive oil, canned tomatoes and canned chilis. Fortunately I have had a lot of things that required my attention so there has been no time to go anywhere that might tempt me to spend. Next week I have one luncheon that will require some cash but other than that I should be able to have a no spend week with the exception of another 25 or so bucks at the grocery store.

    1. That's great, Anne. I really like when I'm able to stay home and the no spending money is an added bonus. I hope you have a good time at your luncheon next week. :)

  3. Sounds like a good week. WOW on getting called in to work right off the bat!
It is amazing how much $ we save making our own. Little things DO add up, for sure.
    Have a good weekend

    1. THank you, Cheryl. Unfortunately, it was an emergency that required me to work, but everyone turned out OK, so that was good. That's the sad side of subbing, having to work for someone who is sick or has an emergency. I hope you have a good weekend too.

  4. Here is Alabama it has been very rainy and VERY cold. I will be afraid to open the gas bill next month. The rain has finally stopped and there is sunshine out already. So hopefully the furnace will not have to run as much today.

    1. Oh wow, I feel your pain. Our home is all electric and when it gets cold like that I can count on a higher electric bill. I hope you gets lots of sunshine from here on out and your gas isn't having to work so hard.

  5. Great going with 2 days of work and freebies. 81-cent sandwiches were helpful. One year while teaching, tuna fish sandwiches were my craving. I ate one sandwich when I got to school and one for lunch, along with crispy veggies. Have not tolerated tuna for years. DH saved $30 on groceries with 3 coupons at a grocery store this week. Family member corrected a problem on DH's laptop. $5 gift of free postage stamps. Thankful for all.

    1. Definitely thankful for all here too, Anna. DH did a great job on saving $30 with coupons. I do that with my sandwiches too. I take two, one when I get there and then one for lunch. We don't eat tuna very often here anymore. I did use it at Christmas time for Tuna Pate, but that was the first time last year that we ate it. I worry about the radiation in fish now and don't want to eat it. It's not the money saver it was back when Amy D wrote the Tightwad Gazette anyway, but I would LOVE to hear what she has to say about the price now.

    2. Amy D would not buy tuna now, I assume. It's chicken instead of tuna for me. Radiation for some fish and pooh-eating for farm-raised fish and antibiotics for whatever. Heard Tucker Carlson contrast Lewiston, Maine to a swanky New England city. Thought, What is he talking about?

  6. We have so far had a mild winter, but I am not holding my breath. Good on the small savings as they add up.
