Green Smoothies


Green Smoothies are a great way to get more nutrients into your diet. These nutrients help to activate our immune system's repair mechanisms using the phytochemicals in the food, which helps our body repair the damage from toxins and aging. 

According to Dr. Fuhrman, blending the greens help to pulverize the cell walls of the plant food. This makes the phytochemicals more beneficial, which maximizes nutrient absorption. 

A basic smoothie recipe might include the following ingredients:

2 cups greens 
1 cup frozen fruit
1 ripe banana
1 & 1/4 cups liquid
2 TBSP seeds (if using)
Any other additions
You can save money with green smoothies by using up fruit that is on the verge of spoiling. It's a great way to use up bananas. 

In my smoothie today I'm using greens that were bought on markdown, and includes kale, swiss chard, and spinach. 

Other things I include in my smoothies are Beet Boost, Matcha, and Wheat Grass powder because my research leads me to believe that these items will only increase the nutrients I put into my body. 

Somedays I use other fruit as it depends on what I have on hand. Seeds are also good to add to your smoothies. Chia, flax, and hemp seeds are good examples. 

The liquid I used today was pineapple juice and water. Some days I like to use cooled green tea, which also boosts the nutrients. 

Starting my day with a green smoothie helps to keep my energy levels high and fuels my body with the nutrients it needs.

  1. I had a green smoothie yesterday. I'm trying to use up a few things, and was also trying to offset all of the chocolate I've eaten over the holidays. ;-) My smoothie had almond milk, banana, pineapple, spinach & chunks of honeydew. Plus ice.

    1. Neat! I was thinking that I needed to offset the things I ate this month too. We had more candy than usual. More dips instead of veggies, so this is a good start to fixing that. Your smoothie sounds delicious. We love honeydew and I love fresh pineapple. My dd is allergic to it, so it's just me that gets to eat it, but it is so good. Here's to a new year for both of us to good health! :)

  2. My brother does this every day. He is in his late 70's and still going strong. You may think about using peanut butter powder as well. He uses all sorts of things.
    I may have to get myself in gear with this.

    1. I have peanut butter powder on hand, Cheryl and that would make a good addition. My brother is into healthy living like that too. Once, when we were little, he gave me garlic pills and I tasted garlic for three days afterwards. LOL

  3. My breakfast includes a green smoothie.
    I always add chia seeds, pumpkin seeds and flax oil.
    I change other ingredients depending on what I have. I use either home grown greens or frozen greens bought in bulk, fruits, ginger, organic veggies etc.

    I haven't used green tea in the mix. I must try it one day. I mainly use cold water and a little bit of pomegranate juice.

    1. That sounds good too, Nil. I've used pomegranate juice before. It's been a while though. We got some one time inexpensively with coupons, so I used it. I love that you use homemade greens in yours, that's so great. I hadn't though to add ginger, I need to do that too. It's so good for you. Thanks for all your tips and suggestions. :)

  4. I refuse to drink smoothies as my mother in law makes them and they are awful......

    1. The more fruit you add the less you taste the greens. I wonder if that could be the problem? Not enough fruit?
