Mob Mentality & One Day Sales

Have you noticed lately that grocery stores are having these one day only sales? I have to say that I am not a fan of the one day sales as it's creating an environment that is a little bit frightening.

There are a lot of people who come to these one day sales because they are looking for the sales to feed their families for less money and we're included.

The behavior of some of the people inside and outside the stores is sometimes rude and overbearing. I like to shop in the morning when stores are mostly empty and take my time and concentrate on what I'm doing. But when stores have one day sales sometimes they don't start until noon and that makes for an environment that is chaotic.

I blogged about my daughter getting in on a 25¢ can sale that left her shaking from the chaos.

I don't know why stores want to create such an environment that can sometimes be unsafe. In the parking lot we witnessed an elderly driver give no regard to someone who was honking their horn and calling out loudly that they were about to hit them with their vehicle.

The best thing to do is to stay away from sales like this and I've even thought about writing a letter to my favorite grocery store to let them know how I feel about this as a customer at their store.

Have you witnessed anything like this in your area?

  1. Preach it sister!!! I hate them too.
Just make the sale available to everyone - not those with a special coupons or card!
On that note - I HATE shopper cards. Just have a sales and let everyone participate - not just those with your card. They would have more sales that way.

    1. Exactly, Cheryl. I'm so glad others agree with me. Have the sale all week long and avoid all this nonsense.

  2. Fortunately that doesn't really happen in my immediate area. The worse that happens is they run out before you can arrive at the store...like Rite Aid's free stuff. If you don't get there shortly after they open on Sunday, you have to get a rain check. If I don't really need/use the item, I never bother with this step. In terms of supermarkets, the biggest one day sales here are the Kroger family 5x's coupon--you can download it from Weds. - Fri, then use it up to 5 times, but only on Saturday. Again, it's never been a problem here, aside from the parking lot madness--that happens no matter what at this store, for some reason. The local IGA also has a monthly price smashers. I imagine being in a more populated area, that could be a real zoo, but so far, not a problem when they have something I actually use. That said, I don't like being manipulated, particularly with crowd mentality, and I think that's what these sales are trying to do. If it becomes a problem here, I would simply avoid them, and like you, write a letter to the company.

    1. Oh yes, Meg, that happens here too with the running out before the sale barely starts. My daughter quit going to town to eo the CVS sales as they would already be wiped out on Sunday morning, so it was not worth it to her.

Those Kroger 5x coupons had Kraft Mayo for 99¢ last week. We didn't get down there, but what a great deal.

I'm glad you are not seeing the problem in your area and hope you don't. I agree with you about being manipulated. I don't like it at all.

  3. Ingles is the primary store here (western NC); I think we have 8 in our county. I love it, but Friday is crazy enough as is without the "Bonanza" sale making it worse, so I haven't been doing that. Good deals, though. Heavy retirement area here, plus lots of seasonal visitors, so you do have to be extra vigilant.

  4. Carol, we've traveled in your area of the country and it is beautiful there. We've been to Grandfather Mountain and Mt. Airy, which is such a neat place to visit. We even ate pork chop sandwiches in the Snappy Cafe.

We used to shop at the Ingle's in Dayton, TN. It was my favorite store at that time. Now we would have to travel to Georgia to get to an Ingles. They have good store brands and prices.

Definitely be extra vigilant while you are out and about there.

  5. Funny you should write about this today of all days....the local Shursave market is holding a Wed. 1 Day Sale, a Thur. 1 Day Sale and a Fri. 1 Day Sale this week.
They run out but I've never had a problem here....but then again, it's a small town and the deals they run aren't that great.

  6. It's definitely easier in a small town, Sluggy. Our little grocery stores here (IGA, Fresh & LOw) don't o the one day sales, but the deals are also not as good. Where we normally shop is about 15 to 20 miles away and that is where they hold the one day sales.

Now I love small town living. There isn't very much traffic and you can get around rather easy. It's the best!

    1. Interesting views about stores and locations. My first 25 years, I lived in small towns/country side. More than 50 years I've lived in large metros. Opportunities of large metros with nearby shopping get my vote, if for no other reasons than the outstanding public libraries and colleges/universities. Give me the USA where we choose our location.

    2. You can't beat the large metro areas for all the great opportunities, Anna. That's for sure.

  7. Definitely I have witnessed it. The mob mentality is the worst. I won't do it. I rather spend a few cents more and cut back on something else to save my sanity. I know it is hard on the employees too and I feel so sorry for them. I definitely think we should write to our grocery stores for allowing this practice. I don't see how it benefits anyone except the store. It doesn't benefit the customer or their employees. I am like you I want to shop when it's quiet. When things are chaotic I make financial mistakes. I shop late at night or an hour before the store closes. I always pick a weird day to shop too. Less people saves me the most money.

    1. That's a great point about the employees, Safyne Anais. Shopping close to the store closing is a good time to shop as well since there are less people then too. I don't feel comfortable when people are surrounding me wanting things I'm next too. You're right, it benefits the store more than anything.

  8. I've noticed recently, that my nearest Kroger is having one day specials on Saturdays. While viewing the weekly circular, I've noted that the specials are very good deals. I haven't shopped at one of the Saturday sales yet.

I live out in the country, 35 miles from major grocery stores. Since I work in town Monday - Thursday, I always do my grocery shopping on my lunch hour. We even have a kitchen with a full-size refrigerator at work, so I can store my perishables until I go home. I don't want to waste gas to drive that far on a Saturday to shop the one day specials.

Maybe one day, I'll end up in town on a Saturday for another reason and take advantage of some good deals. I'm fairly vigilant about taking care of necessary errands on my lunch hour from work, though. Plus, I'm reluctant to go to Kroger during the one day sale for the very reasons you listed! :)

    Have a great day!

    1. I would be doing exactly as you're doing, Angie. I would be going to the store when I was in town and not making a special trip on Saturday. We try to always combine errands here to save on gas money .The thing about this is the specials on those one day sales are very good, like you mentioned. I hope you have a great day too.

  9. Here most of the special sales are 48 or 72 hour sales. There is increased business but it is not total chaos.
