My Frugal Week

Frugal Things I've done this week include...

- We found more jeans that my daughter does not wear, so we priced them and listed them on Facebook. Seems like we are able to ask a little bit more for items on the local Facebook groups than we could get at yard sales or flea markets.

- On Tuesday I cleaned out our freezer. I thought I was completely out of cheese, but I found a couple of bags of mozzarella cheese in the bottom of the freezer.

- The flea market is letting sellers set up for free on Wednesdays in June, so my daughter and I set up that day. We did not sell much like we did on Saturday, but I found two great deals on food.

- We found a twelve pack case of Pringle's Tortilla Chips for $3.00 and a twelve pack case of Chicken Flavored Rice for $3.00.  Each item ended up being 25¢ each, which reminded me that we always need to be on the lookout for cheaper, more inexpensive sources of food.  The rice will definitely be used for inexpensive side dishes this summer.

- I went to the foot doctor on Tuesday because 0f left heel pain. The doctor diagnosed me with Achilles Tendinitis, three Calcaneal Spurs, and Plantar Fasciitis. He gave me a cortisone shot, Naproxen for pain, and physical therapy for my foot.

- Naturally, I picked up two free bottles of water (dd was with me) when I filled my RX at the pharmacy.

- For Wednesday's lunch I used the mozzarella cheese I found in the freezer, some wrap outs I had in the freezer, and some pizza sauce from the pantry and made pizzas for lunch along with the last of the watermelon. We continue to work on our goal of eating at home.

- On Thursday I made Banana Pancakes again for breakfast and sent my daughter to her college orientation. I cleaned up the kitchen and took garbage off (still doing this myself at no cost) and started decluttering again. I found several items to sell at the flea market on Saturday.

- Since I had my grill out for Pancakes, I decided to make Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup for lunch today. I also used it to cook salmon patties for dinner tonight.

How is your week going?

  1. Yum! that tomato soup looks so good! Been a while since I had some; I need to find a homemade version so I can control the salt. do you have a recipe?

    1. No, I sure don't, Carol. Mine was a canned version. I know there was one in the Tightwad Gazette where she used a can of tomato paste and then added so many cans of water. You could definitely control the salt there and still have it be very inexpensive.

    2. Here is a recipe that my family uses. Sugar and salt can be adjusted to taste. It may be the same recipe from the Tightwad Gazette, but I found it online. We thinks it tastes a lot like the Campbell's brand:

      1 can tomato paste
      4 cans of water
      2 Tbsp. butter
      2 Tbsp. cornstarch
      1 c. milk
2-3 Tbsp. sugar, or to taste
1 tsp. of salt, or to taste

Mix tomato paste and water in a bowl till smooth.
Melt butter in a saucepan. Add cornstarch and cook until smooth and bubbly. Add tomato/water mixture and boil to thicken. Add milk, sugar and salt. Heat through and stir often. Enjoy!

  2. I made your granola and love it. It was a bit sticky after cooling so put batches in the toaster oven to dry a little more. Perfect. I think next time I will add pecans and diced dried apricots. Thanks for sharing.

    1. So glad you tried it, Toni. Did you spread it out on a cookie sheet to cool? I think the pecans and diced dried apricots would be terrific! Dried apples would be good too. . :)
