Au Gratin Potatoes

Au Gratin Potatoes

Ingredients:

3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 & 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
2 cups milk
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
5 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 6 medium)
1/2 cup chopped onion

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In saucepan, melt butter over low heat.
Stir in flour, salt, and pepper until smooth.
Gradually add milk and bring to a boil.
Cook and stir two minutes or until thickened.
Remove from heat and stir in cheese until melted.
Add potatoes and onions.
Transfer to greased 2 quart baking dish.
Cover and bake one hour.
Uncover and bake an additional 30 to 40 minutes until potatoes are tender.

  •  Pictured above are the Au Gratin Potatoes I made recently. I didn't cut them into slices, but rather cubed them for this dish.

Moving the clocks forward one hour on Sunday for Daylight savings Time has made me tired all week. I am ready for the weekend, so I can sleep in a little bit. Hopefully I will adjust quickly.  :)

  2. Time change has never affected me, but I hope that you quickly adjust.

Au Gratin Potatoes was one of my mother's favorite dishes to serve. Fresh veggies in season from our garden. Out of season, veggies had been frozen from garden. Then a ham was sliced for a delicious meal. Mom had a wonderful touch combining her menus.

By the way, after 9-inches of snow one night last week, we are to have a high of 66* today. :)

    1. Thank you, I hope I adjust soon too. :)

      Your mother's dinners sound wonderful.

Sounds like you all warmed up nicely today. It has been raining here today, but I won't complain, it is better than the bitter cold weather.

  3. My mama only served au gratin potatoes with meatloaf and peas...lol. I'm not sure why.

My daughter loves them and I try to serve them more often. If I have leftover ham frozen, I will add ham and peas and make a casserole of sorts. That may be her favorite way to have them.

    1. It sounds good, SHara. Meatloaf, peas and au gratin potatoes. Ham is good in them too. :)

  5. Shara, your mother served her au gratin potatoes with meatloaf for the same reason my mother served the dish with ham. It was what we liked.

  7. My mother only serves au gratin potatoes (or any other cheesy side dish) with pork products. Same goes for applesauce.

My brother-in-law always wants my mom to make her au gratin potatoes for Thanksgiving to which our whole side of the family says NEVER! ;-)

    1. LOL, around here people serve Macaroni and Cheese with Thanksgiving dinner, which always seemed non traditional to me.
