Proof of Rising Grocery Prices

We went by Sam's Club today to purchase a few things, and one of them happened to be the five pound bag of shredded mozzarella cheese.

I noticed immediately that the price had gone up since I bought it last month. I keep all of my Sam's receipts in one of those ten cent spiral notebooks, so I can keep track of the prices.

These are my receipts for the last year:

June 23, 2010 - Paid $10.37
March 23, 2011 - Paid $11.29
April 22, 2011 - Paid $12.98

So, in nine months time the mozzarella cheese has increased in price by $2.61, which is a price increase of more than 25%.

Since I bought the cheese in March the price had increased by $1.69, which is a 13% increase in just one month.

I've been reading about grocery prices increasing with increased frequency, and today I had tangible proof and wanted to share my findings with my readers.

  1. True, price increases are across the board. Still, you are paying $2.59/lb for preshredded cheese. My best price is $2.79 for cheese ends that I grate myself. If I am lucky, I come across Provolone, Cheddar, Havarti, Munster, Swiss. I prefer to not buy American cheese for use in cooking. My best recent buy was 1 lb blocks of Sorrento or Sargento Mozzarella cheese at Shoprite, on sale for $1.79-an unheard of price!Even better was paying 79 cents as I had $1 cpns. : ) I didn't need cheese but took advantage of this deal, it keeps well. My price book for cheese USED to be $3, I moved it about a year ago to $4.

  2. So very true, Carol. This price still beats anything I can buy at the local grocery stores unless of course I run across a great sale or something at the close out store. The best I can do at our local grocery store is right under $4 a pound, and I'm hoping with the price increase Sam's Club will not feel the need to increase the price even more, so I can continue to save money there on cheese.

Excellent deal you found on the Sorrento/Sargento cheese. Reminds me of the time I found 8 ounce blocks at the closeout store for 50 cents. They do keep well, so I stocked my freezer and we didn't have to buy cheese for almost one year. Of course, that was a few years ago, and I doubt we will ever find such a deal again.

I remain ever watchful, as you do, about finding the lowest prices to feed my family.

  3. I know this post is older, but I'm starting at the beginning of your blog now that I've come across it! :) Last year (2017) I was able to find the 8oz bags of shredded cheese as low as .99 cents. In 2018 the lowest the price ever got was $1.25.

    1. $1.25 is a really goof price for that cheese. Even back when Amy D wrote the Tightwad Gazette the cheapest she found cheese for was $2.00 per pound and that was over 25 years ago, so you are doing well! :)
