Welcome to Frugal Workshop where every Monday I share the simple strategies used to save money in my kitchen over the past week, along with the meals that made it to our dinner table. You'll find practical tips on how we saved money on food hopefully to inspire your own meal planning using the foods you have in your own pantry.
My Frugal Week
One thing I snack on regularly is apples and I love Honey Crisp apples, but they are expensive. A three pound bag of them is selling for $7.48 at Walmart right now. This week I bought the Gala apples in the three pound bag for $2.38 instead, which is a savings of $5.10 and they were delicious, so for now I am making the switch to save money.
We have a 32 gallon garbage can filled with water downstairs in case we need it for anything when or if the power goes out.
Savings of the Week
I found one of my favorite Skinny Syrups on clearance at Walmart for $3.50, when they normally sell for $4.97, so I bought four of them saving myself almost $6 in the process.
What’s for Dinner
Monday ~ Chicken & Dressing, Green Peas.
Definitely a night for leftovers and choices included chicken and dressing or meatloaf. Bailey was out with a friend so we were on our own for dinner, which gave me a break from cooking for the day.
Tuesday ~ Choice of Homemade Pizza or Leftovers
Wednesday & Thursday ~ Fajita Chicken Tacos, Chili Beans, and Corn.
Friday ~ Chicken Strips and Cole Slaw
I had been in town running errands, so his was a quick and easy dinner when I got back home.
Saturday ~ Chicken Croquettes, Cole Slaw, Brussel Sprouts, Pickled Beets.
This is a recipe I first made back in 1994, and is a good recipe to use with canned chicken, which I mentioned last week I have a lot of in my pantry right now.
Sunday ~ Bean & Cheese Enchiladas, Chili Beans, and Corn.
Bailey had some turkey sausage thawing for her breakfast meal prep, but then decided against it, so I used the sausage in our dinner in order to not waste it. I turned it into turkey taco meat and then made enchiladas with it.
I was able to use several cans from our pantry including refried beans, green chilis, and enchilada sauce. I was also able to use up the last of the chili beans I had in the fridge, so this was a use it up meal too.
What’s been on the menu in your home this past week? Did you build up or organize your pantry this week? Have you been decluttering? How are you managing food prices? We would love to hear all about it in the comment section.

Have you ever tried Fuji apples? They are perfect!
ReplyDeleteNo, but I will be sure to try them now. Thank you for the suggestion.
DeleteNice pivot on the sausage. Im in a use it Up mode this week.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sam. It's good to use up all those things we have on hand.
DeleteI actually picked up a few pantry items on Buy Nothing, which rarely happens. But, Annie's Mac & Cheese is a favorite of both boys, plus some sparkling water, protein bars & granola. It will all get eaten up.
ReplyDeleteI did manage to find a sparkling water flavor that I fell in love with in Utah. It's really not cheap, so caution & look for it on sale, but it's the Spindrift Island Punch flavor, which has pineapple orange & guava (POG) flavor. It has 13 calories & is fabulous. I have to buy them & hide them, so they don't go too quickly, given they are at least 2x pricier than regular sparkling water on sale. However, I consider it better than a treat I'd normally have, as they hit the spot & are refreshing & taste kind of like a fun cocktail. - Hawaii Planner
That's great to have gotten those items on Buy Nothing! It's nice to be able to splurge on something you enjoy like that and have it as a treat from time to time. I'm the same way with certain protein drinks.
DeleteI agree with above - Fugi apples are a delight.
ReplyDeleteAll sounds so good.
I need to try those too, Cheryl. :)
DeleteGreat savings! Your meals sound yummy!
ReplyDeleteWe have leftover ham and sides for a few days, so I am glad I don't have to cook.
Hope you have a great week.
Thank you, Kathy. Yum on your Easter ham and sides and I kwym about not cooking for a few days. Woo Hoo! LOL
DeleteI hope you have a great week too. :)
Dear Belinda, my favourite apples are Cortland. Your meals sound good and well planned. Last night and on Saturday as well I had stripped some white meat from half a rotisserie chicken with mashed onion potatoes and asparagus. The meal was delicious and wholesome.
ReplyDeleteThis evening I am having cottage cheese with some canned peaches 🍑 😋
Tomorrow evening I will have two eggs with melted Swiss cheese.
I hope you and Bailey had a lovely Easter 🐣
Thank you so much for sharing, dear friend.
Thank you, Linda. I'll have to try the Cortland apples too. Your dinner with the rotisserie chicken, mashed onion potatoes, and asparagus sounds so good. And I really like cottage cheese and peaches as it is soooo refreshing.
DeleteMy favourite apple is actually the Macintosh, but Honey Crisp is up there as well. I am really very surprised that our Honey Crisp cost less than yours.
ReplyDeleteGood use of leftovers in your meals.
God bless.
I love honeycrisp also. We are eating mostly veggies right now and not really eating much fruit, but for the price difference I would happily eat galas.
ReplyDeleteI have excess food storage in my laundry room. This weekend I bought a new bookshelf at Walmart and inventoried the excess
before shelving it. I have too much!
Oh, your new shelf sounds nice. I love having shelves to store items like that as it really helps with organization.
DeleteIn your Chicken Coquettes recipe, what is this '1/4 teaspoon sale'. I'm not an experienced cook and would like to try this. Thanks
ReplyDeleteThat should be salt. Thank you for letting me know.
