First Frugal Friday of April 2026

Welcome to Frugal Friday

Each Friday here at Frugal Workshop, I love sharing the frugal wins, quiet savings, and simple strategies that helped us stretch our budget over the past seven days. It’s a gentle look back at the small things that make a big difference.

My Frugal Week

One thing we did while we were waiting on our new air conditioner to arrive, was to put black poster boards over the kitchen windows because the sun was shining directly in those windows and heating up that area of the house. I was pleasantly surprised at how well that simple task made the kitchen and the whole house so much cooler.

On Wednesday I had an errand to run in Chattanooga and I stopped in at Goodwill. I found two pull chain lamps for $5 each, so I bought both of those as pull chain lamps are my favorite lamps. I also found a large lazy Susan, also $5, for our dinner table.

The Great Cleanup Continues

I've been cleaning more downstairs again now that the weather been warmer. Dad had pop bottles (soda bottles) behind the door leading to his office, so I cleaned those up and put them in the shed outside with all his other pop bottles. I'm sure they are valuable to the right person.

I've been taking one box of mail from the cabinet at a time, and going through it and disposing of it as needed. I've hired a new garbage company to come on Tuesdays and they will take off unlimited garbage for $50 per month, so I want to take advantage of that and be busy cleaning out down there, and we still have our regular Friday crew to take off garbage too.

I found some neat things from our childhood in some of the boxes like grade cards, school reports, old pictures, etc. It's fun because I send pictures to my sister and we can laugh over some of them.

I posted a flyer from a pizza place from the 1980s from my childhood hometown of Lockport, Illinois in that Facebook group and we've been reminiscing about it. The owner's son reached out to me and asked if I would be willing to send him the menu as he didn't think to keep one back then. So, it is back on its way to Lockport once again.

There is a countertop next to the washer and dryer downstairs that was filled with tools and such, so I cleared all that off and scrubbed the counter, so I can put my laundry there as needed.

Someone posted on Facebook that they needed a non-working microwave along with some other things for a theater play at the local community college. So, I offered up the one Dad had downstairs along with a clock. I was glad to finally have it gone and grateful to help someone else in the process.

Washing Machine Update

Bailey watched a YouTube video and fixed the agitator dogs in our washing machine. These are small plastic cogs in top-load washing machines that allow the agitator to rotate in one direction.

Pictured above are the parts from our machine. On the left are the new pieces and what they should look like and the parts of the right are the ones from our machine. Yikes!

But even though Bailey was able to fix this part, there is another repair it needs, which involves lifting/moving the washer, which I won't be able to help with right now. So, for now the washer upstairs will have to wait.

In the meantime, I continue to carry laundry outside and downstairs to Dad's washing machine. I'm so glad we kept that washer/dryer combo just in case of something like this.

Other frugal things we did this week include:

- Taxes were completed and paid for this week.
- Laundry washed, folded, and put away.
- Did some weed eating and clearing of brush in the yard.
- Sold one item on eBay for $22.00.

Weekly Gasoline News

Gas Price in SE Tennessee: $3.79 gallon

The U.S. Postal Service, pending approval from the Postal Regulatory Commission, will begin to add an 8% fuel surcharge to package deliveries starting April 26 and will last until January 17, 2027 and is driven by a 43%+ rise in diesel costs. This temporary fee will apply to Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select.

Photo of the Week

I found this advertisement from Tide while cleaning out mail downstairs this week, which had to be from the 1980s. The coupon is good for 65 cents off and has no expiration date. I like it when coupons have no expiration date.

Question of the Week?

Do you think my Frugal Friday blog posts are too long? Do they get boring to read? Would it be easier to read if I break it up into more smaller blog posts throughout the week? Please let me know what you think.

Saving Money on Entertainment

This week I started watching Leanne, a TV series on Netflix set in Knoxville, TN. Leanne finds her husband is leaving her. The show reminded me of one of those classic sitcoms, which I enjoy,  and Leanne is very likable as a southern Mom starting over with support from her loving, but unfiltered family.

Puff the Magic Dragon

Molly Whuppie is well known for her nostalgic folk music for children, and has built a community of followers worldwide from her home on Prince Edward Island. She sings those songs from our childhood that we all know and love.

My Reading Nook ~ What I've been Reading This Week

Consumer Affairs is reporting the U.S. inflation rate was fairly moderate at 2.4% before February 28. But after the attack on Iran, oil prices have surged. Now, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) projections suggest inflation could reach about 4.2% in 2026.

How was your week?

Thank you for dropping by my frugal blog, you are always welcome here.

We would love to hear all about your week in the comment section.

  1. I love those no expiration date coupons too-great find! I dread the thought of anything with everything that has transpired. I wonder how good garage sales will be -I bet people will think twice about selling anything or maybe they will because they need the money to live. Time will tell I guess..Garage sales start here in a couple of weeks.
    have a wonderful Easter.

    1. Those are great coupons when we can find them, Vickie. We are off to a bag sale today at the local thrift store. If we see any yard sales we will be sure to stop. I wonder about them this year too. Hopefully we will still be able to snag a few bargains this summer.
I hope you have a wonderful Easter too.

  3. I think your posts are great. I learn from others to think outside my box and never know what might apply. Well done to Bailey. Even if you have to get some help, she resolved part so will reduce cost. I'm in Frugal to the maximum mode now. Just too many expenses that are necessities so need to be mindful of discretionary.

    1. Thank you, Sam.
I understand about being in frugal maximum mode right now. Seems like we've had so many expenses this year and especially this month. Like you, I like to learn from others too and you never know what might apply to our lives that we can do to help save money and such.

  4. Dear Belinda, I love ❤️ Goodwill. We have them here in Canada 🇨🇦 as well. In Quebec they are called Renaissance which means rebirth. But it is the exact same logo as Goodwill, because they are Goodwill stores.
I love your posts, dear friend, and it doesn't matter to me whether they are long or short.
Thank you so much for sharing, and Happy Easter 🐰 🐣 😊 to you and Bailey.

  5. Good for Bailey on the fix she did - hopefully she can have some help soon and fix the rest.
I love finding no expiration coupons - what a treat.
I always enjoy your posts - it is fun seeing what others are doing and getting new ideas.

  6. I love when I can declutter & help out someone else at the same time, so well done on that front with the microwave. And DH would be very impressed with Bailey, as he has repaired our washer numerous times! He loves YouTube videos & treats it as a bit of a hobby for home repairs. I'm less inclined that way. - Hawaii Planner

  8. I dont think your posts are too long or boring. I’ve only started reading again though due to computer problems . I am curious why your dad saved his pop bottles at your home though? The last post I read I thought you had to move? I’m a bit lost I suppose.

    1. Thank you! The downstairs here was my Dad's office and workshop where he built custom knives for a living. The downstairs is filled with heavy machinery and knife parts and metal. It is a lot to go through and clean up.

My parents were divorced and Mom got the house, but Dad never got all his stuff out of here and he has a lot of stuff here.

My siblings live out of state and have not helped me with the clean up, so it's taking me a while. No one is going to buy this house with all that stuff downstairs. I just can't get my brother to understand that. He has not been here to see what all is involved. It's easy for him to say things should be done this way or that way when he hasn't see what all is involved. Our Dad was a humongous hoarder!

Both our parents died without a will, so we put the house in all three names, me, my brother & sister. They want to sell the house and for Bailey & I to buy a home of our own. My brother is much more insistent than my sister.

Bailey & I have a house fund that we add to regularly and look for houses regularly too, but so far we've not been successful.

Hope that helps explain it a little bit anyway. It's all been written about here, but it would probably take a lot of reading to piece it all together.

    2. How interesting. I am shocked to hear he was a hoarder and left junk for YEARS?!?!? omg I could not live near that. And how did they have no wills??? Omgoodness!!!! We really need to support and guide our parents. Any chance bailey can go off on her own and maybe get a cute apartment and travel and go to school? Or does she have to stay with you?

    3. He and Mom split up in 2014 and he passed in January of 2024, so over ten years and he wasn't working towards removing anything in that time.

I do think we need to support and guide our parents as we can. My Dad didn't want anyone downstairs in his space. If I had known how bad it was I would have been more than happy to help him clean it out.

In fact during some of the time he was gone the water heater flooded his office and I had no choice but to clean it out and when he came back he really liked it.

Hoarding is a mental disease and it's a big topic to go into detail here about why they hoarded the way they did.

Bailey is free to come and go as she pleases. I think with many young adults these days they know what a struggle it would be to make it on their own and they choose to stay with their parents longer. My nieces, on both sides of our family, who are Bailey's age still live at home with their parents.

    4. Yes I understand this generation has some barriers ours didn’t. I still hope she can get an education and travel eventually. It’s short term pain(eg cost) for a life time of benefit.

    5. Oh wow, Belinda, you are kinder than I would have been in responding to Anonymous. You don't owe anyone an explanation, and certainly not to someone who makes such snide comments as anonymous.

    6. Dear Anonymous, I don't know why you think Bailey does not have an education. She has her two year Associate degree and does not want to go into debt for further education at this time, which I think is smart thinking. But that should be of no concern to you. And as far as traveling, not everyone thinks traveling is for them. I for one do not have the desire to travel that so many others have. If you want to consider furthering this conversation, I suggest you stop hiding behind the anonymous label.

Kathy, Thank you so much. I love that you have my back here and consider you a very dear and trusted friend. Thank you.

  10. I'm so impressed that Bailey fixed the washing machine! Way to go and just think of the money that was saved by not having to call a repair person. I like the length of your posts. As a matter of fact, I'm always sad when I come to the end of them. I love the old coupon for Tide. I wish I had been smart enough to save my old coupons that didn't have an expiration date. I threw them away years ago. Hope you have a very blessed Easter.

    1. Thank you, Bobbi. Yes, Bailey saved us money for sure by fixing the washer. Thank you for your sweet comments, I'm so glad you enjoy reading my blog posts. I tend to throw things out too and then later wish I hadn't. I have found some pretty neat things in Mom and Dad's "stash" of old stuff.
I hope you have a very blessed Easter too, Bobbi. :)

I think you know that I enjoy all your posts whether they are long or short so do what works best for you and I'll just keep reading either way!😊 I'm so impressed with Bailey fixing your washing machine, I don't think I'd have the nerve. Give her a high five for me!😁 My husband has fixed our snow blower several times by watching YouTube videos but he has way more patience than me. Wishing you both a wonderful Easter.

  15. Happy Easter weekend. We have been busy with family and birthday celebrations, so I am late responding. I enjoy reading your blog, so write however much you feel like writing. I'm sure that it takes a lot of time, so do what works best for you.
Yay for Bailey for fixing that part on the washer. How neat finding old report cards and things. I bet you were a good student. Fun about the pizza menu; I wonder how much a pizza was back then. So kind of you to donate the microwave and clock for the theater group. Oh those songs were a blast from the past, thanks for sharing.
Wishing you and Bailey a blessed Easter.

    1. Thank you, Kathy, and thank you for having my back. I enjoy writing my blog and work on it a little each day. I love having this "journal" of frugal things we've done over the years and like being able to look back and see how we did certain things before. I love those songs, she has so many of them on her YouTube channel. Childhood memories can be so great. We've had a really good conversation in the Facebook group about pizza places that were around when we were growing up back then. I hope you and your family have a very blessed Easter too.
