Saving Money in My Frugal Kitchen ~ Week #1 November 2025

My Frugal Week

This week I compared several of the items I normally buy at Walmart to the price of the equivalent item at Aldi. While I used to find Walmart usually had the better deal, I did not find that to be the case this week. For example, Walmart has their three pound bag of yellow onions for $2.49 while the Aldi price on them is $1.65.

On Saturday we went to UGO and Kroger in Georgia to get groceries. Two of the best deals from UGO were turkey sausage for $1.99 and turkey pepperoni for $1.79, which are both better than the regular grocery store. We stocked up on both of those.

At Kroger we saved $51.30 using their digital coupons and got deals on cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, butter, and several meat markdowns.

On Saturday evening I went to PHP to get the free vegetables from the Mennonites. I came home with peppers, tomatoes, green beans, eggplant, lettuce, and radishes.

On Sunday I worked on getting all the produce washed and cut up to use this week. I broke and strung the green beans to have for dinner one night, washed and diced all the peppers and radishes too.

What’s for Dinner

Monday ~ Chicken Breast or Salmon Patty, Green Beans with Onions & Potatoes.

I wanted to avoid food waste and use up some leftovers we had in the refrigerator. So, it was a choice between chicken or salmon. Green beans with onions and potatoes rounded out the meal.

Tuesday ~ Chicken Sandwiches like Chic-fil-A, Baked Potato, Purple Turnip, Yellow Squash & Onions.

The chicken sandwiches were for Bailey for her movie night. I had a vegetable plate for my dinner, all free from the Mennonites & PHP here. I baked the potato and roasted the turnip, yellow squash and onion in EVOO and they were delicious.

Wednesday ~ Chicken, Baked Sweet Potatoes, and Butter Beans.

I made a couple of chicken breasts in the Instant pot for dinner and put a couple of sauces on the table to go with it and we both chose the BBQ sauce. Baked sweet potatoes and butter beans rounded out the meal.

Thursday ~ BBQ Chicken or Smoked Sausage, and Baked Apples.

Friday ~ Polo Loco, Rice, Queso Dip & Tortilla Chips

We were invited to a Halloween party Friday evening and this is what was served. It was delicious.

Saturday ~ Grilled Chicken, Teryaki Stir Fry.

We had been out the majority of the day getting groceries, and rather than eat out and spend more money, I came home and made a quick dinner. I made grilled chicken and used a marked down stir fry kit of teriyaki vegetables.

Sunday ~ Ham, October Beans, Corn on the Cob, Stir Fry Vegetables, and Salad.

We had a couple of salads we bought on markdown plus I had the free vegetables from PHP, so we had salad with our dinner. I also served ham, October beans, and another marked down package of teriyaki stir fry vegetables.

What’s been on the menu in your home this past week?

  1. Hi Belinda, I have 2 questions. What is PHP in your area and what are October beans? Hope you are well! Bun

    1. PHP aid People Helping People, which is a local charity/thrift store here. They do a lot to help people out. October Beans are also known as Cranberry beans and Walmart sells them under cranberry beans. They are delicious! I hope you’re doing well too, Bun.

  2. Your meals sound delicious, and how nice to get the free veggies. Since EBT cards are not going to be happening right now, I am going to go shopping for donations to our church food pantry. I expect the lines will be much longer than usual this Wednesday when the food bank is active.,

    1. Thank you, Anne. I suspect the lines will be longer too. I’ve noticed that people are really stepping up to the plate though with donations. It’s like the blood/plasma donations after 911. People really do try to help out when they see a need.

    1. We waited a long time for them to come here too, Kim. I hope they make it out your way one day.

  4. Yum! Sounds delicious! Love the picture of all the fresh veggies!
You found some good deals too. I buy the weekly deals at Kroger too, and I usually cherry pick at Food City and Food Lion which are only about half a mile apart. It takes more time, but I think it is worth it.
Hope you have a great week.

    1. Thank you, Kathy. I think it’s worth the time too to cherry pick the loss leaders. That’s what will save us money. 💴

  7. Hi Belinda, I have heard a lot about Kroger and sadly there are none here in Canada (not that I know of, if there are), but certainly none here in Montreal! I try to go with the store's weekly specials, which means I sometimes go to 3 or 4 different grocers. Unfortunately this month, the Montreal transit company is on strike from November 1st until November 28th, which makes it virtually impossible to shop around like I usually do!
I will do the best I can, though.
Dear friend, your meals sound delicious! My favourite would be your Monday menu! :)
    You did great at Kroger's!
Thank you so much for sharing, I really enjoy and appreciate your posts!

    1. Thank you, Linda. Is there any chance the strike will end early? I often think about those who have issues with transportation and how they fare trying to get those items they need.

    2. Hi Belinda, I am hoping that the strike will end early. This is the third one this year, since June! The others were two weeks or less and not every single day, but this is the longest and worse (according to the transit company...in 38 years). First strike it was the mechanics, second one was the maintenance workers, now it is all three, with the bus drivers doing a 3 day "legal" strike. Honestly, I am praying this will end, but what is happening is that the union wants the workers to have a certain amount of money but the company says they don't have that kind of money to pay them.
All I can do is pray and hope for the best. Thank you so much for asking.

    3. You’re welcome, Linda. Three since June is a lot! I’ll include this in my prayers for you too and hope it ends quickly.

  8. I was wondering what October beans are as well. Your menu sounds wonderful and getting all those free veggies is a great way to stretch meals.

    God bless.

    1. Thank you, Jackie. I’m so grateful for the free vegetables and it really does help stretch our meals. October beans are also sold as cranberry beans. Walmart sells them. Do you have Walmart where you live?
