Quote of the Week
By getting the urge to splurge under control, it’s possible to save significant amounts of cash that can be used to stretch your household budget. ~ Len Penzo
My Frugal Week
Last Monday I took the garbage off, took some canned food to the local Little Free Pantry, took the last walker to People Helping People and dropped off some other donations there.
Once I got back home I started in on laundry and cleaned out my bedroom walk in closet, so I could actually put more stuff in there. It’s much nicer having the extras in the closet instead of my bedroom. We also store the items we will consign later in the year in the interim to keep them out of the way.
Last week when I deep cleaned the kitchen, I pulled out a tall cabinet we used for storage and moved it to the back porch in favor of an open shelf in its place instead. I’ve stored my canning jars in the cabinet on the back porch, which worked out so well. We will even be storing our garden tools in there.
We also moved a table from downstairs into the kitchen/dining area upstairs to use for storage. I sorted all my canned goods and organized them very well. I’m actually very excited to have this extra space upstairs.
I listed and sold a wedge pillow on Facebook Marketplace (FBM) for $20.00. Bailey sold a cart from the pole barn for $20 on FBM also, so now we have mad money for yard sales this week. π
I processed clothing for Bailey’s shops this week. She has a new program that uses the photos she takes and it fills in all the information about the clothing item such as V-neck or scoop neck, color, sleeve length, type of print (solid, abstract, floral, etc), type of fabric, etc.
These are descriptions I used to have to write down for her, but now I only need to weigh, measure, fill in the size and brand, which is much faster for me. Technology sure can be a good thing sometimes.
Some of the things I did to save money this week include cutting my own hair, and turning off the internet on my tablet from Verizon. We have separate internet other than Verizon, so there was no need to pay two different companies for internet.
I also unsubscribed from more marketing emails from companies I did not sign up to receive. It’s part of my goal of avoiding consumerism. Also, I was at Home Depot the other day and an employee stopped me and asked questions about our water.
Turns out they were selling whole house water filtration systems, which did not bother me. BUT, since then I’ve received several phone calls for handyman services and am convinced they sold my cell phone number, which makes me upset with Home Depot.
On Thursday we went to the first day of a church rummage sale. For those local, it was the Bowman Hills Seventh Day Adventist School. They did not have women's clothes this year and the prices are higher than usual, but I suspect it is because everything is fifty percent off starting tomorrow.
I bought a Campbell's Cookbook from 1968 for $1.00.
One fish soap dispenser for $1.00, which is so cute.
And, these pretty cloth napkins for $1.00.
Freebies this Week
A lady at one of the yard sales I went to asked me if I wanted some cockscomb flower seeds, and of course I said yes as they are such beautiful flowers.
I found a nickel in the floor at Dollar Tree this week too. I won’t keep a yard sale coin, but will keep a corporate one. π
‘
In the free boxes at yard sales I found a bag full of gift bags, some dish towels, dish clothes, and a reusable shopping bag. I donated some of this but did keep the gift bags and a very nice dish towel.
Fun Question of the Week
If you could come home to one of these three things, which one would you pick?
1. A clean home.
2. A home cooked meal.
3. Your partner all done up.
For me it’s a toss up between number one and two, but if push came to shove I’d pick number two. The husband of the wife who asked him this question on TikTok also picked number two. You know that old saying, “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” fits here. π
Saving Money YouTube Videos
Prepper Princess has a new video titled, “Extreme Frugality: When You Finally Realize Almost Nothing is a Necessity”. I know some people feel like she is extreme, but she does have some good points here like using Zote soap for laundry and V05 shampoo because they are both affordable, which is wise frugal advice. As with everything else, use what you can and leave the rest. I for one will not be going without deodorant. π
Absolutely #1! The time it takes to get our house fully cleaned vs the time it takes to make a meal? No comparison. I also enjoy cooking a lot more than cleaning. - Hawaii Planner
You got some really good deals. I have several of those very same plaid napkins! They are so pretty. I love the old cookbooks using soup. People were so creative.
Sounds like a good week! Glad you have some fun money for the yard sales, and I hope you find some treasures. I love the fish soap dispenser. Hmm I think a home cooked meal would be nice...my son and dil are grilling for father's Day, so I am going to enjoy not having to cook. ;) Hope you have a great weekend. Kathy who is having trouble logging in...
We ordered our new dishwasher on May 1 and it is finally installed as of today. So the thing we have been wanting is that Magic box that you put dirty dishes into and push a button and they come out clean.
Oh, nice! We don’t have a dishwasher here except for me. π But, it doesn’t bother me to wash them, I wash as I go along, which makes it easier. But, we have had them in other houses and they are so nice. It took about six weeks to get yours. You must be thrilled!
Hi Belinda! That was smart to turn off the internet on your tablet...especially if you don't use/need it. What a shame that Home Depot is allowing your phone number to be sold...how annoying!! I love the Campbell Cookbook...anything vintage is the best! Question of the week is #1 for me...LOL...I would gladly let someone clean my home! :) Have a great weekend! Janel
Thank you, Janel. You are with the majority on the clean home. It was a toss up for me. I love the vintage cookbooks too. They have some of the best recipes. I hope you have a great weekend too!
I am thinking for me, it would be #2, since our house is generally clean most of the time anyway. But coming up for an idea for dinner gets to be tiresome. I was on a road trip on Wednesday and got held up, so I called home and asked for dinner to be made. It was nice to have it done for me and not by me for a change!
I like to cook but hate to clean. Number 1 hands down! I did not have a frugal week at all, but had to get several things for MBS's husbands funeral reception. At least we all know it was a one time expense.
Oh definitely number one! I can cook better than I clean! Lol
ReplyDeleteπ I really liked number one too, Penny. π
DeleteI'd pick number 1, no question.
ReplyDeleteNumber one seems to be the definite winner!

ReplyDeleteSame here, I like cooking compared to cleaning. You are the third person to pick the cleaning.
DeleteHi Belinda, I love vintage cookbooks. I love vintage, period. Looks like you did really well. I love to cook, but I also live to clean and organize.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy cooking too and I love to thrift kitchen items. My go to at yard sales is to first check the kitchen items out.

ReplyDeleteThose are so pretty I just had to have them. I like the cookbooks from the 70s as they are good and basic.

Oh, that is so nice of them to grill for you all. I would enjoy a day off from cooking too.

DeleteI actually had that cookbook. I copied the recipes we used and donated the book. You had a great frugal week in your home.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
How neat, Jackie. That is exactly what I do too. Write down the recipes I want and then trade the book.
DeleteI have that same Campbell's cookbook. It was my mothers. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteAwwww….how neat, Bobbi.
