Second Frugal Friday of March 2023

Welcome to Friday!

My Frugal Week

What a week we’ve had here! Last Thursday I bought groceries, then on Friday a big thunderstorm came through and the power went out for 55 hours until late Sunday night. So, I had to trash the majority of the groceries I bought. But, I have insurance to cover such losses, so I’m grateful for that. Whew!

I apologize for not answering blog comments last week, but it was inevitable with no power. My tablet was the first thing to go dead and my phone was barely holding on as well.

We dropped off everything at the consignment sale this week and we are not going to shop the sale this time as we are saving our money for other things right now.

We had more issues with trees this week as lightning struck one tree and it came down and brought two more trees with it blocking the driveway again. So, we hired a man who is cutting down the trees in that area and paying us for the lumber, which is so much better than having to pay to cut them down.

A few years ago I bought a free sample of Strideline socks only paying shipping for them. I wasn’t a fan of the socks because they were no show and I prefer ankle socks, but Bailey really liked them, so I bought her some for Christmas that year.

Fast forward to this past Christmas and everywhere I looked they were out of stock on these socks. So, Bailey taught herself how to darn and now she is darning any holes in her socks. Amazon has these in stock now, but she won’t need to replace
hers for a while yet now.

Question of the Week

Have you had to have injections in your eyes? If so, what was that like for you? My retina specialist is considering that for me when I see him in April.

Saving Money In My Frugal Kitchen

I feel like there wasn’t much saving money in the kitchen this week having to throw out food. But my insurance check should arrive today, so we can restock.

Meals This Week

All meals are served with either salad or vegetables and may not always be listed here.

* If you see a dinner in bold print that means we had it more than once this week.

Red Bag Chicken on Brioche Buns with Honey Mustard, Seasoned Fries.
Sandwiches
Polish Sausage, Dirty Rice, Corn on the Cob.
Cheeseburgers, Fries, Tomato, Lettuce, and Onions.
Polish Sausage Dirty Rice, Scalloped Potatoes, and Corn on the Cob.

  1. Sorry you had such bad effects from the storm system. My insurance company no longer covers food loss - you are lucky. Glad the trees are cleaned up.
Hope your coming week is better!!!!

    2. Thank you, Cheryl.

I’m glad my insurance covered this loss. I was very discouraged to have to throw out food. As you know, we do our best to avoid wasting food.

I hope you have a good week ahead

  2. Oh no -so sorry you lost your groceries! It's a great thing you have insurance! I've tried darning but I'm not that good at it. Now if one sock gets a hole I throw it away and save the other sock in hopes that two will eventually match. LOL

    1. Thank you, Vickie. I understand about the socks. I have dexterity issues, so it’s hard for me to sew by hand or darn these days.

  5. My Mom had many injections in her eyes and she didn't think it was too bad. They did help her.

  6. So sorry to hear about the food waste. That's frustrating! We had a big storm in our neighborhood, and we are one of the only houses that still has power, so I'm grateful!

    1. Thank you, I’m so glad your power stayed on. I’m always grateful when ours stays on in a storm too.

  7. I've had eye injections. The eye is numbed and the shot is so rapid you hardly know it's done. Not bad.

  8. I am so sorry about the storm and power outage and loss of food. That is rough, but I'm glad that insurance will help replace some of the costs. Glad you and Bailey are ok!
I think the worst power outage we have had was during the derecho of 2012, and we were without power for 11 days. We went to a hotel for one night since temps were close to 100 and I wanted a shower. ;)
Hope your eye dr appointment goes ok, and that it isn't anything too serious although the thought of a needle in my eye gives me the willies.
    Have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you, Kathy. Oh wow, 11 days is so long with no power. I remember when the power was out here and Mom went to a hotel too. She just couldn’t take it anymore. Willies is the perfect word for that! 😂

  9. I have been taking my mother in law for injections in her eye for wet macular degeneration. I switched her doctor because the first doctor would not give her a 1/2 valium before the procedure. His partner in the same practice would give her the relaxation medication. We go every 12 weeks. They give her the pill before the procedure in the office. I would recommend making sure your doctor will give you the meds. There is no reason for anyone to suffer or panic.

    1. Oh, that was so great that they gave her something to relax her before they did the injection. My dr didn’t mention anything like that, but I’ll be sure to ask him now. Thank you. 😊

  10. That's a long time without power and such a shame about the food but it couldn't be helped.

  11. Having to throw food out is a bummer, but it does happen. I am seriously thinking of canning some things just to keep them shelf stable. I have never done anything but water bath canning so pressure canning will be a new adventure for me.

    1. I would love to pressure can too. The big eye on our stove top is out though, so it will have to wait for now.

  12. I'm sorry to hear that you were without power for so long & had to throw out food. Thankfully, you're being reimbursed. Well done to Bailey for fixing her socks. I've never heard of that brand & just saw that they are a bit pricey - $8 for one pair on Amazon. I'm only too happy to pay that price for a 6pk socks...lol, but I completely understand wanting to continue using your favorite items. I'm trying to figure out how to fix worn toggles on my favorite coat.

    1. I hope you can figure out how to fix the worn toggles. Those socks are definitely pricey and they are marked left and right, so you have to make sure you get a left and right when you fold them. Arg! 😂

  13. that sucks about the power. It's a shame you couldn't see my face while I was reading about your eyes. I can do NOTHING with eyes. Icky, icky icky...LOL
